Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 5

Another October and another government shutdown. But that won’t stop college football. So here is another pack of pigskin picks for your prognosticating pleasure. The military academies might have to cancel their games, supposedly because they have no money. Sorry, but the military is not affected by the shutdown. Therefore, in honor of those who have to serve under whatever Commander-in-Chief the electorate puts in charge, we feature all three of them this week.  This week is another pillow fight featuring the team with the longest losing streak. Maybe Southern Miss can win at home against another winless team, Florida International, after the embarrassment in Idaho. Oh, and since this another bye week for the University of Arizona, the upstate arch rival gets the tie breaker, since they are playing another WV favorite: Notre Dame. For some reason the game is at Arlington, Texas. Maybe the Irish didn’t want a team with a Devil for a mascot playing on “sacred ground”. Or else the Sun Devils didn’t want to try scoring while facing “Touchdown Jesus”. Editors: can you find the overused word in this post?

1. Air Force @ Navy —  I think you know the drill: Go Navy…!

2. Army @ Boston College – Let’s see if the Black Knights can overcome the political adversity.

3. #25 Maryland @ #8 Florida State – By request, here are the Seminoles making their first appearance in this  contest.

4. #3 Clemson @ Syracuse – A lot of Southern teams this week. At least this one is playing up North.

5. #6 Georgia @ Tennessee – In recognition of Anlir who started this contest on the old Whirled Views threads. Anyone know what he is up to now-a-days?

6. #24 Ole Miss @ Auburn – Alabama shut out Ole Miss last week. How will they fare against Auburn?

7. Missouri @ Vanderbilt – Sorry, Chas. But Tigers are popular as mascots.

8. Kentucky @ #13 South Carolina – Had to have an easy game to guess.

9. Florida International University @ Southern Miss – in the Pillow Fight of the Week*. Two winless teams. One with a 16 game losing streak. Maybe they really should use pillows.

10. Tie Breaker-#22 Arizona State vs. Notre Dame – Guess the winner and the score.  And tell us why you think the game is in Texas instead of one of the home fields.

  1. I see in today’s Times-News that the Service Acadiemie’s games will be played.
Also, Connor Shaw will start at quarterback for the Gamecocks.
I’ll have to cogitate a bit before making picks.
But it seems not to do any good.

  2. Chas’ wild guesses:
    1. Navy
    2. BC: Army was hoping for a shutdown.
    3. Seminoles: Really wild guess here
    4. Clemson, I expect them to show up in Columbia undefeated
    5. Bulldogs will beat the Vols handily.
6 Auburn, See where I’m headed on this?
    7. Three Tigers on the same Saturday? Hafta do it.
    8. Gamecocks. If someone taught them how to tackle this week, that is.
    9. Southern Mississippi. They at least know what a football is.
10 Irish, 21-7. No home field advantage here. SC and NC State once played in Charlotte to avoid that. Also, no student section for either. i.e. More money.

  3. Oh this one should be a cinch. Let’s see if it’s as easy as my last win, under Anlir.
Air Force, in honor of a nephew
Army, in honor of a brother
Florida State, because I think my husband would choose them
Clemson @ Syracuse, Let’s go for Clemson
Tennessee, because it’s one of the loveliest states
Ole Miss, because too many of my friends hate Auburn
    Vanderbilt, of course
South Carolina, because my husband wouldn’t want me to say Kentucky (hmm, he just told me he doesn’t care about their football team, just basketball, but I’ll stay with my pick because my sister used to live in S.C.)
Florida International University, because it too is in Florida and my husband loves Florida
Tie Breaker-#22 Arizona State vs. Notre Dame ASU (because I lived in Arizona half my life), 35 to 21

  4. Chas- I know you don’t like tigers, but in number 7 are you picking Mizzou?

    Here are my picks:

    1. Navy — Navy fighter pilots will win the fight.
    2. Boston College — Army hasn’t had a good team in years.
    3. #8 Florida State — Seminoles have turtle soup on the menu.
    4. #3 Clemson — I’m thinking BCS championship for these tigers.
    5. #6 Georgia — I graduated from a school whose mascot is the bulldog, so, Go Dawgs!
    6. #24 Ole Miss — I know their Top 25 run has to end sometime, but not this week.
    7. Missouri — Go Tigers!
    8. #13 South Carolina — Had to have a gimme game this week. Everyone should get this one, unless there is another meltdown.
    9. Southern Miss in the Pillow Fight of the Week — The only thing they have going for them is home field advantage. There might be a little motivation involved. Maybe.
    10. #22 Arizona State — As an Arizona fan, I have to hold my nose and make this prediction. It would be like an Auburn fan wanting Alabama to win. As I have said before, ND is about my least favorite team.

  5. Oops! I forgot a score in the tie breaker, and since I managed to tie the last two weeks, I better give a score so I can beat Cheryl. ASU 45-21 (based on last week when ASU scored 60 some odd against USC.)

  7. inbutnotof – You’re welcome. At least we won’t tie this week. So where in Missouri where you born and how old were you when you moved away?

kbells- Did you give a pickle to your husband? Does he even know he won last week? He is invited to return any time he wants to show us his ability to guess better than we do.

  9. Please note: Arizona State University is playing Notre Dame, Not Arizona. Please. Do not confuse the two. That would be the equivalent of confusing Auburn with Alabama. Or the Yankees with the Red Sox.

  10. Also equivalent to confusing FSU with those hoodlums from Gainesville!
Peter…born in Independence. Moved when I was 4, then lived there again as a newlywed in the late 80’s.

  11. Rumor has it that a person must apply as a resident of the state of Alabama by checking one box Roll Tide ___ or War Eagle___.. Choose wisely. Marriages, jobs and peace with neighbors are all at stake. If you try to fake or lie we will know who you are. You will be the only people outside during the Iron Bowl.

  12. KBells is correct. As you can tell from her posts she has a bi-racial child but that isn’t what makes her’s a mixed marriage. She is an Alabama fan he is an Auburn fan. That is what we call a House Divided.

Somewhere is heaven a certain “Pop” is upset because one of his grand daughter’s is at Auburn and the other has recently decided she wants to go.

  14. Congratulations Chas. You indeed had the best score at 9 correct. Three people had 8, but you did one better. in fact, if it hadn’t have been for that one point loss to FIU, Southern Miss would have given you a perfect 10.

  15. Burt Reynolds is a perfect ten according to some women. And Chas looks like him!

Cheryl: I’ll post the actual count from now on. I’d do it now, but it is at home on that computer and I am at the community college watching students take their mid term exam.
