Our Daily Thread 9-4-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1609 English navigator Henry Hudson began exploring the island of Manhattan.

In 1781 Los Angeles, CA, was founded by Spanish settlers. The original name was “El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los  Angeles de Porciuncula,” which translates as “The Town of the Queen of Angels.”

In 1833 Barney Flaherty answered an ad in “The New York Sun” and became the first newsboy/paperboy at the age of 10.

In 1886, Geronimo, and the Apache Indians he led, surrendered in Skeleton Canyon in Arizona to Gen. Nelson Miles.

In 1923 the first American dirigible, the “Shenandoah,” began its maiden voyage in Lakehurst, NJ.

In 1949 the longest pro tennis match in history was played when Pancho Gonzales and Ted Schroeder played 67 games in five sets.

In 1953 the New York Yankees became the first baseball team to win five consecutive American League championships.

And in 1972 US swimmer Mark Spitz captured his seventh Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay event at Munich, Germany. Spitz was the first Olympian to win seven gold medals.

  1. Morning Linda.
and to Chas, yes I live in Grass Valley which is within 1 1/2 hours of Tahoe. The mountains are a part of me, which is partly why I came here to these mountains.

  2. Morning all. My brain would not shut down last night. I thought about and worried about and prayed about everything under the sun. I think I fell asleep sometime after 2am and woke up again at 6:40. Yes, I DO drink coffeed and I have halfway through my first cup.

Cheryl, I didn’t comment on the card/avatar the other day but it is very pretty.

I read that Ariel Castro was found dead in his prison cell of an apparent suicide. I am of mixed throughts there. He wasn’t caged long enough or at least he saved us the cost of a trial to prove he was crazy and to house and protect him in prison for the rest of his life. It’s hard to say Rest in Peace but I will leave it to God what to do about his soul.

There is a Question for you. What exactly does Rest In Peace really mean? I was in a discussion of what heaven would be like and someone made the comment that they didn’t think there would be much “resting in peace” in heaven. They thought it would be a beehive of activity worshipping and praising God and being with loved ones.

I will leave that question to those of you who will bite. I am teaching a real estate class this morning and have to prepare.

  3. Good Morning Folks. I will be teaching a series of lessons at our church. If you have ever read the book by Howard Hendricks, “Living by the Book”, I highly encourage you to get a copy of the book. I will post the lessons on my blog for those that wish to follow the course. Basically, the course teaches you the ability to study the Bible on your own and become a good Berean.

  4. Good morning, all. I awoke at 5:00 with a migraine. It’s slowly improving. Becca was unusually helpful this morning, showing compassion for me and doing many things for herself that she normally has me do. She just left for the bus stop (it’s less than a block from our home). This is the first year we’re letting her go by herself. Most mornings, I still walk with her as she enjoys the company. But, I just wasn’t up to it this morning and she left with a skip in her step and a smile on her face. Amazing what one day of having friends to play with at recess will do for her attitude! I’m hoping it will be another good day for her. She had her first acting class last night and absolutely loved it. She made friends with another second grader in the class named Briannah. Briannah attends a different school, but they hugged each other good-bye and Becca’s already asked when she can have her over for a playdate. I’m so glad she made a friend at the class — it’s good for her confidence.

I raced to the stables after Becca’s acting class b/c L. should have been completely done with her riding lesson by 7:00. When we arrived, she was still mounted on the horse and hadn’t even begun to untack. We didn’t get home until 8:00 and then the kids still needed to eat dinner/take baths/etc. I really like L.’s new riding instructor, but the lessons are supposed to be one hour and instead are running about two. It’s great that the trainer is so enthusiastic, but on school nights, we really don’t have time for two hour lessons, b/c it means we’re at the stables for three hours. L. is in all AP classes and has too much homework to spend three hours at the barn. L. was up ’til midnight doing homework. I’m sure she’ll be exhausted today. The new trainer, Lyn, is widowed and never had children. She obviously has some extra time on her hands as she’s charging me for an hour lesson but consistently works with L. for two hours at a time. In the summer, this wasn’t an issue, but now that school is back in session, it’s just not going to work. L. will be in her first horse show this Sunday. She’s very excited about it and I’m excited for her–though not looking forward to spending the majority of the day outside in the heat. We’ve been experiencing 100+ degree weather with 80% humidity for the last week or so and I feel like I’m melting when I have to be out in it.

  5. Rest in Peace is a nice saying to someone when there is nothing else to say.
It has no practical meaning. Like, “He’s is a better place now”, when we don’t know that to be a fact. Yet, it’s useful because you don’t want to say something bad about the dead person, not even if it’s true. It’s too late for that.
i.e. Not even at Stalin’s funeral would you say “This poor guy ruled an empire with an iron hand, but he’s roasting in hell now and will forever”. Which would be the correct thing to say.
Yet, you don’t want to hold out false hope. So, you say, “May he rest in peace”.

But Dr. Jones tells of the funeral he held for a young man who was a wayward son. The father told him to “tell it like it is”. “He went his own way and now he’s in hell.”
I have no fear for mine, but in any case, I couldn’t take that track.

  6. I have lots of year behind me; but never in my life have I heard of a “play date”.
We just went out and if someone else was there, we played something.
I thought all kids did that.

  7. My daughter schedules “play dates” for the kids too…we never had play dates…after homework was done..we went outside and played until the streetlights came on…then it was time to come in, take a bath and go to bed…Seemed as though that was the normal routine for all families “back in the day”! 🙂

  8. I need your help please. My god-daughter is in the 5th grade. She needs to get postcards from all over the United States (the goal is all 50). Something that shows a special feature of the state or the landscape, what it is known for, etc.
If you are willing to help me help her just send me an email at klb1668 at yahoo dot com and I will tell you where to send it.
    Thanks in advance!

  9. “Play dates.” It’s now part of our vocabulary — they even have play dates for dogs now — but I was like Chas & nancyjill, we just went out and played, rode our bikes, threw around a baseball or football, until dark. It was all pretty spontaneous but also ‘routine.’

I’ll have to catch up on last night’s threads, but it sounds like Becca had some buddies at recess yesterday? I did see where her teacher is a Christian — thank the Lord for the many Christian teachers who are carrying on in the public schools.

I’d hesitate to say anyone for sure is in hell, I think that’s beyond our ability to truly know (though we can have some pretty good guesses about people). But I think it’s a sign of extending God’s grace that we pray and hope that somehow the person repented and came to faith in the end. That can even happen in one’s very final moments on earth. Our salvation depends on God & on faith alone, after all, not in our ability to do ‘good’ works out of our own righteousness. If that were the test, we’d all flunk, of course, and quite badly at that. 😉

I think I have that book that drivesguy mentioned, now I need to go find it and maybe re-read it.

  10. Donna, that has always been my hope upon someone’s passing….that in their final moments of drawing their last breath here on this earth, that they heard His voice and repented….only He knows…
I’m off to take a desk, chair and lamp to my dear friend who lost everything in the fire….she is beginning her homeschooling year with her last two kiddos at home and suddenly realized she didn’t have a school room any longer! The kids didn’t mind it much though 😦 🙂

  11. Re: “play-dates”: I wish the kids in the neighborhood played together spontaneously, but that’s just not how it’s done where I live. Most of the children are very scheduled and without planning a play date, are never available to play! And, some of the moms seem perturbed if it’s a last minute invitation. I love it when kids drop by to play, but I’m not the typical mom out here. There’s one fifth grade girl who stops by weekly asking if Becca wants to play, but then explaining they have to play at our house b/c her parents are busy. I don’t mind, b/c she’s a sweet kid and Becca feels super special to have such a mature friend, but I do find it funny. I’d never let Becca invite herself over to play at someone else’s house, much less show up at their door without phoning ahead. But, I’m glad the girl feels comfortable doing it.

Donna: Sorry you never got your horse! 🙂 I do feel very blessed to be able to provide this experience for L. She’s wanted a horse of her own since she was seven and even though we don’t actually own the horse, a full lease is a lot better than riding various school ponies. L. is a super sweet kid (I realize I may be biased in my assessment, but she is a genuinely kind person who has her head on straight) and it gives me great pleasure to see her joy every time she’s with Simba (the horse).

Kim: I’d be glad to send a postcard or two from the great state of Texas. When does she need them? Just send the address to my email or Facebook account. When does she need them?

  12. Nancyjill: My childhood home burned to the ground on Christmas Eve when I was in seventh grade. It was traumatic. No one was hurt, but we lost four dogs and all our worldly possessions. It is kind of you to help them in their time of need.

  13. Donna: Yes, Becca had someone to play with yesterday at recess, thanks to the teacher. I am hopeful. The teacher (Mrs. M.) was very responsive to my email and said to not hesitate to contact her in the future with any concerns I might have. She seems to have a tender heart and a special way with kids.

  14. Karen, -I think it was Karen- Did you ever find your card?
The reason I asked was that I lost my ATM card briefly. It was in the pocket of the shirt I wore yesterday.

AJ — Thank your sources for the J.C. Bach tomorrow for me. 😉 Looking forward to it. And wow — viola! Plus a piano concerto? I shall enjoy. 🙂

Thank you, also, for your continued prayers, AJ.
