Good Morning!

And Happy Saturday! 🙂

On this day in 1792 King Louis XVI was taken into custody by mobs during the French Revolution.

In 1821 Missouri became the 24th state to join the Union.

In 1846 the Smithsonian Institution was chartered by Congress.

In 1921 Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio.

In 1927 Mount Rushmore was formally dedicated. The individual faces of the presidents were dedicated later.

In 1944 U.S. forces defeated the remaining Japanese resistance on Guam.

In 1945, the day after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced they would surrender.

In 1949 the National Military Establishment had its name changed to the Department of Defense.

And in 1981 Pete Rose hit a single and broke the National League all-time hit record with his 3,630 hit.

Here’s an oldie to start today off. The picture isn’t great, but what do you expect, it was like 1955. 😯

Today is Bobby Hatfield’s birthday.

And it’s Todd Nichols’ as well.

Anyone have a QoD for us?

Here’s my question. Can a hamster get an ear of corn as big as he is in his mouth without breaking it?

Let’s find out. 🙂

😯

Do not try that at home kids. Or anywhere else.

  1. Chas, you gave me a smile. My grandmother saw Roy Acuff live once. She was secretly in love with him. His is another voice that was soothing to BG when she was a baby and one of his songs gave me great comfort when I was on my way to my dad’s funeral

  2. Enjoyed The Wabash Cannonball song, too.

Since most of us here grew up in the days when parents routinely spanked, switched or maybe washed mouths out with soap, just wondering if anyone remembers their last deserved discipline in that form and what you did that got you into that much trouble?

  3. Yes. I do. I am not sure what I did but I distinctly remember being in the hall bathroom with my father sitting on the toilett (with the lid down) with me over his knees and him spanking me.
It seems I might have been in 5th or 6th grade and he told me that would be my last spanking, I was beoming a young lady and too big for that sort of punishment any more.

  4. The last big time switching I received was fully deserved because I had been told to not throw pinecones. In my neighborhood we often had pinecone battles. So being a part of the ones who did that activity and the opportunity presented itself, I got my supply of pinecones and found a strategic location from which to launch them which as I recsll was atop our chicken house. I took aim at a younger child, Patty. My aim was too good, as in bird’seye only it was Patty’s eye I hit with the pinecone. Truly, I did not mean to hit her in the eye. I felt so horrible. And then I faced my deserved switching. I don’t think I was ever in another pinecone battle. I don’t think Patty’s eye was too badly hurt, so it could have been worse.

Yesterday we got a white oxford cloth button down. I know if seems silly, but please pray we get the rest of it today. I am about at the end of my attention span here.

Are you certain that you want to go by a hyphenated name?
It creates problems for people who have to deal with it.
e.g. In Elvera’s system at school, you would be found under the “C”s.
And when people talk about you, they’re only going to say “Cotten”. It’s easier to remember. In fact, I’ve forgotten the other one already.

  7. I don’t remember when I got my last spanking, or what it was for, but I remember some details about the last spanking I thought I was going to get. I’m not sure of the offense, but my mom was really mad at me for something and came running after me. I ran into my bedroom, but we didn’t have a door into the room, so my mom ran through the doorway after me, and I was trapped. I pressed my back against the far wall, and when she got halfway to me, I screamed at her, using a curse word in the sentence. 😯 She was so shocked, she just stopped in her tracks. I don’t remember if she said anything, or cried, or how long she stood there frozen before leaving, but she never laid a hand on me again. That was the only time I ever cursed at her, but she was very intimidated of me for a long time after (and well into adulthood, too). I was not an easy one to raise.

  10. You have not scared people a away, 6 Arrows. It is a busy Saturday for many with school cranking back up.

I remember my mother being tolerant of the rock music I listened to but she was dismayed by my listening to the Blood, Sweat, and Tears song with the line,”I’m not scared of dying and I don’t really care…” That song bothered her enough that she commented about it. I think that song with its attitude was shocking to her.

  11. I’m not sure what my last spanking was. The last one I remember for sure I didn’t deserve–Mom had given me permission to do what I had done, but Dad didn’t know that and I guess he thought I was lying. Considering where we were living at the time I was at least 15, and Dad died when I was 16 (nearly 17), so it may well have been my last spanking.

  12. Janice, my parents (who have been lifelong Christians) let me listen to whatever rock music I wanted to, also. They didn’t ever say anything about the lyrics, but I remember one time, a lovely Christian friend of my mom’s was over (I believe with her young children, who I used to babysit). I was dancing around the living room, playing my “Get the Knack” album, singing the words to one of the songs, which goes, “Good girls don’t, but I do.” My mom’s friend came into the living room, smiled a warm greeting at me, then said, “‘Good girls don’t, but I do.’ Hmm…really…”, looking rather quizzically at me.

That sure got me thinking about what I was listening to after that, and made me a lot more aware of song lyrics and what their message was (and my implied message by singing them), much more than if I had received a lecture on the subject.

  13. Good Morning….what a horrific afternoon they had down in the Springs and Manitou…sadly one person is confirmed dead and another missing….the videos of the flooding were gut wrenching to view…..praying for all affected…..

I don’t recall my last spanking….I do recall being made to go to the willow bush and picking out a switch, stripping the leaves and handing it to my mother so that she could switch my legs, leaving bright red slash marks….oh the pain! My punishment was usually for leaving the yard without asking….we were never to venture outside of the fence……

  14. An added question related to the other one: Did the boys in the family get more spankings or switching than the girls?

My brother did. Even though I was slightly older, he was bigger and would sometimes take advantage of that when he was pretty young by pushing me down. Things settled down some as we got older. But he could be an aggravating trickster. As an older teen, if I was expecting a date, my brother would slip out the back door and come around to the front door and knock as if he was my date arriving when my hair was still in curlers and I had not put on makeup. I would be so mad I would throw my hairbrush at him. Once he ducked and my hairbrush hit his shelf of model cars. Major damage!

  15. I didn’t get many spankings, but one I remember was when a friend and I wandered away from our block (we really were quite young at the time, much too young to be wandering the neighborhood) and were delighted to discover … an Army base!

It was a big place with jeeps and soldiers in helmets with guns. And there was a very nice soldier-guard who chatted with us through the chain link fence while we played outside on the sidewalk. What fun we had!

Imagine our innocent shock when both sets of our parents stormed around the corner after spotting us.

I still remember that march home, the parents yelling all the way, my friend and I each accusing the other of coming up with the idea.

  16. That memory is a treasure, Donna.

We did not get in trouble for it, but our little gang of neighborhood explorers discovered on the far side of the woods directly behind our house was the dump for a carpet mill. We would raid it for discarded remnants and samples. I even sewed some together and took the quilted “rug” to use for my bedside carpet in my college dorm room.

  17. I have returned from shopping. I am worn out although I did get a good laugh as we wandered through Victoria’s Secret. The mousiest, most plain faced, long haired, woman was about to check out. In her hands she had something white and silking with the feathery kind of stuff on it. You know from the skankiest corner of VS! It’s those quiet ones you have to keep your eye on. 😉

  18. I remember some spankings, but I cannot remember when my last one was or the reason for it. I stopped getting corporal discipline around age 7 or 8. It wasn’t that I was particularly good, I just learned to avoid doing the kind of things that got you spanked. I didn’t have brothers, so I can’t comment on the second question.

  20. Kim: Glad you survived shopping. I hate it, too. Last time I had to take eldest daughter shopping, I had her bring a friend. Then, they went shopping and I went to the bookstore. After about an hour, I went to the various shops and paid for the items I deemed “worthy” that she had placed on hold. It was a marvelous system. Eldest is pretty responsible and reasonable when it comes to picking things out, so this worked really well for us. Eldest enjoys looking at everything before making a purchase, whereas I just want to get in and out as fast as possible. Anyway–glad it’s over for you. Sounds like y’all got some good deals. I bet BG is excited!

Regarding the QoD: I can’t remember my last spanking, but I do remember getting one when I was about seven b/c I ran away from the babysitter. What a brat I was that day! My dad had asked the babysitter to wait for a phone call he was expecting. She had previously told me and Monica she’d take us to the park, but was unable to b/c of the need to wait by the phone. We were angry and feeling like this was unfair, so we decided to go to the park on our own. Unfortunately, the park was in a sketchy area of Houston and it wasn’t safe for us to be there alone. It was about 4 blocks from our house. Well, Monica and I were too scared to go all the way to the park, so we just went to her backyard at the end of the street and played there. The poor babysitter was frantic and had to contact my parents, who were entertaining business clients at a fancy restaurant. When Mom and Dad found us in Monica’s backyard (her parents weren’t home–I can’t remember where they were) they were furious (justifiably so!). We were sent to different rooms to await our punishment. My parents spanked me and made us stay separated until Monica’s parents could pick her up. The anxiety I experienced while awaiting my punishment was much worse than the spanking!

  21. So, it looks like from today’s responses that the ladies here are the ones who misbehaved and received their just wages in switchings and spankings. Chas was the one who got whipped with a belt which seemed to be a common thing back then in a lot of homes. I know the principal’s office at school used a paddle but I was never one to see it first hand. (Thank goodness!) I did get detention hall one time as a senior when a friend and I went off campus and picked up hamburgers for lunch. Only one other time did I go off campus with a group of girls for a couple of hours to see what it was like to play hooky. It seemed dumb and about equally as boring as being in school. I also did not like the worry over if we were to get caught. Truly, not my idea of fun.

  23. Chas for the last hour and a half I have watch the 5 installments of the Hank Williams Story. I did know that my Johnny Horton married Hank’s widow Billie Jean, but this was the first time I have ever seen her.

The Hank Williams Story on Youtube is well worth watching. They talked about his other persona, Luke the Drifter so I am off to find you one of those songs to share. It is somewhat amazing that in 29 short years he was able to leave the collection of music that he did.

  24. Kim, I couldn’t get the link to start playing on my computer. I’ll try again tomorrow. If you’re referring to the duet where Hank joins Anita on “I can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You”, I have seen it several times.
I’m familiar with Luke the Drifter. Hank’s producers didn’t want him singing such songs. Hence, we have Luke.
    “Be careful fo stones”
“Picture from Life’s other side” etc.

Tess watched for a while but finally had to leave when the neighbor came home on his motorcycle. He needs much herding through our back common fence, apparently.

  27. I don‘t know if Hank Williams was a Christian. Tales of his life, and Hank Junior wrote “Family Tradition” to explain his life contradict this. But Hank wrote several Gospel songs. His theology was without error. I have a CD called “The Gospel According to Hank Williams”. According to the insert, he wrote:

    I Saw the Light
When God Comes and Gathers His Jewels
    Jesus Remembered Me
    Wealth Won’t Save Your Soul
Are You Walkin’ and A Talkiin’ for the Lord?
Can You Hear the Blessed Savior Calling you?
How Can You Refuse Him Now?
    Pictures from Life’s Other Side
    And
    A House of Gold

I have to believe that this was in his heart. There is nothing in any of these songs that a good Baptist couldn’t say “Amen” to.

  28. Elvera called last night, as she always does, to check on me. She told me about her day. When she said she was ok and was having a nice time, she really told me all I really wanted to know, but I listened to her tell of her travels.
Then, as I knew she would, she asked what I had for dinner.
I told her that I had planned to go to House Hidelberg, I closed the house and had shed my clothes to change into something else to wear. Then, I said to myself, “I don’t want to do this.” So, I went into the kitchen. I looked into the refrigerator and saw a refrigerator crammed to the brim with Nothing to Eat.
I’ll bet all of you know what I mean. She understood.
I finally had a plate of barbecue, something green, rice and beans.
I’ll have a nice lunch after church today. Don’t know where yet.
She had lunch at Cracker Barrel yesterday.

We still have lessons in Ecclesiastes today. Ecclesiastes is difficult to teach. I’m glad Dr. Jones has it.

  29. The series I noted above was produced by the BBC. Why is it they tend to do a better job with our stories than we do? Hank Williams was probably very much a Christian in his heart but he was a binge alcoholic. As we have discussed here recently alcoholics can’t control their actions. They leave a wide path of pain and destruction.
The biographer or one of the people interviewed on the show said that he preferred the Gospel songs but his record label didn’t want him doing them so that is why they came up with Luke the Drifter. It also made the point about him being a “bumpkin” who couldn’t take his own songs to a wider audience thus the reason that even early on other singers recorded his songs.
