Our Daily Thread 5-28-13

Good Morning!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend and Memorial Day. 🙂

On this day in 1774 The First Continental Congress convened in Virginia.

In 1863 the first black regiment left Boston to fight in the U.S. Civil War.

In 1937 President Franklin Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington, DC, signaling that vehicular traffic could cross the newly opened Golden Gate Bridge in California.

In 1957 National League club owners voted to allow the Brooklyn Dodgers to move to Los Angeles and that the New York Giants could move to San Francisco.

In 1961 Amnesty International was founded.

And in 1996 U.S. President Clinton’s former business partners in the Whitewater land deal were convicted of fraud.

Quote of the Day

“Then sails are back’d, we nearer come,
Kind words are said of friends and home;
And soon, too soon, we part with pain,
To sail o’er silent seas again.”

Thomas Moore

First up, the birthday lady and the Pips.

And then John Fogerty is next. Since he was at his best with CCR in my opinion….

And here’s a little music trivia for you. Today in 1955 the song “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” was reported to be the most popular song on Billboard. It would also make the chart 2 additional times in 1955 when 2 other artists released their versions of the song. Here’s the original from Bill Hayes, which was the only one to hit #1. 5 bonus points if you can tell me without looking what soap opera he played on.

Anyone have a QoD for us?

  1. oh, no, after lurking around here for years did I just actually post a comment??! I didn’t think that it was possible. I am a grandma and a missionary schoolteacher in PNG

    But not for years.
    Hi Jo.
Jo can tell us how things will be tomorrow because it’s already that there. And Jo can always be first on any day.
A few years ago, Jo, a guy from our church in Falls Church went on a mission trip to PNG. We sent a bunch of t-shirts. Where do you originate?

Kim, did the people accept the offer?

  3. Welcome Jo Miller.

Yesterday was quiet. I fixed steak, burgers and brats for memorial day. I gave most of the food away. One steak went to a neighbor lady who is a single mom trying to get out of the rut she is in by going to school. A nice lady. Her children always come to me for them to be held by me.

Another plate went to another lady in my neighborhood. He place of employment was in Moore so she is temporally out of work. Her husband is disabled. I got a letter from Daniel Noren, missionary in Sweden to Muslim Immigrants. Chatted with my girls some and talked to Cindi. She has some reservations about coming here. I can understand. Her family is in Ohio so she will be starting over to build her support system.

  4. I was reading the seventh chapter of John today. About the brothers of Jesus. We know only two, James and Jude (Judas, a very common name). I can hardly imagine what it must have been like for them. I’m sure that Jesus, growing up, played games with them; and didn’t cheat. And he didn’t always win. Billy Graham once said that Jesus would have been the world’s greatest athlete. But there is no indication that he performed a miracle before he was baptized. And none for himself. I wonder if he teased and flirted with the girls like teenage guys do?

Some stories have been written about the childhood of Jesus, but I’ve never read any of them. We only know that he stayed behind in the Temple when he was twelve. His parents were worried. He shouldn’t have done that.

  5. Welcome Jo!

Even though yesterday was not a holiday up here, we both had the day off and did a ton of yard work and went for a beautiful drive up to the golf course for supper.

Yesterday’s comments got me thinking. I’m from a Mennonite Brethren background (pacifists) so I have no relatives that I know of who have ever served anywhere. It makes me really appreciate the sacrifices of those who have served and of the families of those who have served. I’m pacifist in leaning, but I also understand that there is a time to stand up and fight.

Thank you to all who have sacrificed and served.

Jo, what part of PNG are you in? Around Port Mausby or the hinterland? There was lots of fighting around there in WWII, Port Mausby and the Bismark Sea. New Guiena obviously has internet connections now. Is it well developed now?

  7. My computer is painfully slow, like the girls’ in the PCMatic commercial. Have any of you tied a cleaner program like that? I always take mine to the computer guru. I’m tempted to try the commercial. Any experience?
They say “free download” and I don’t doubt that. But ain’t nothing free.
Or, nothing is the only thing that’s free.

  8. Welcome Jo. 🙂

Sundays and holidays are always slow. Sundays for obvious reasons, holidays because folks have stuff to do and friends and family to visit.

We had a cook-out with the neighbors. And as we always do when the opportunity arises, my neighbor Jimmy and I showed the block why we are the team to beat in quoits. These younger folks are a hoot. To hear them tell it they pretty much invented the game. Unfortuately for them, we’ve mastered it. 🙂

Welcome to Wandering Views, Jo! Lurkers are usually likers 🙂
    We like you, too! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I am going to be helping pull together supplies for VBS. I enjoy shopping so this is a good way to use that energy.

Has anyone here had any experience with Crown Mvelopes as a budgeting tool?

  10. Greetings Jo! You’ll always be able to pull of being “first” from your time zone. 🙂

Off to work for me — I overslept after the cat spontaneously (and repeatedly) attacked me in my bed, prompting me to get up briefly at 5 a.m. to make sure she had some food available (she did, she was just being a brat).

When I fell back asleep (I let her out), I had a dream that the new neighbors came over and said I was being really mean to the cat and that the cat needed to be removed from my home. 🙂

    I am so sleepy …

  11. I did push the cat off the bed several times with a harsh word or two like “STOP” “GO AWAY” … But she kept bouncing right back up, it only seemed to add to the intrigue of the game for her.

Kind of like when Tess the border collie herds her out of the kitchen and she gallops through the house, putting on a good “Oh-I’m-Scared!” wink/wink show — then saunters right back into the kitchen.

Poor Tess. Poor me. The cat sometimes is insufferable.

  13. Janice,

Only a little. They did help, but I only used them for a brief time. But my wife and I did attend the Crown classes and I credit Crown with helping me get my act together. It helped me alot. I’ve made tons of bad financial decisions. Much of it due to ignorance. But since the Crown course I have a much better understanding of the principles and actions necessary, as well as things to stay away from. I recommend it.

  14. Welcome, Jo!

Janice, I have used Crown Mvelopes for several years. I like it a lot; it rolls together budgeting, bank and credit account records, and online bill pay all in one place.

  16. Thanks for the info on Mvelopes. I have been very old-fashioned and not wanting to do banking, etc. online.

My church has offered a financial management class from the Christian perspective but it is with some group other than Crown. I may decide to do it when it is offered again. I get the e-mail offers for Mvelopes and have never known anyone who used them so it is good to hear your recommendations.

    [Mumsee]

Did I say I don’t believe your dad is an atheist/agnostic/

I don’t know your dad. I don’t really know you, except as some pixels on my computer screen. Logically, I am agnostic on the matter. Though I have my doubts either you, or your dad, actually exist. Maybe you should allow your dad to communicate with me. He probably needs all the support and encouragement he can get. It must be very hard to be (I suppose) surrounded by so much religiosity. It’s no longer quite acceptable to burn heretics at the stage, regardless of what Jesus told your ancestors.

    Like

  19. A lack of religiosity is all too common in my life. I go to church and visit here and a few other sites to find Christian friendship. My world has always consisted of more who are unbelievers or maybe I should call them unpracticers than believers. Mumsee’s father will not have to go far to be in the company of others who do not believe. I know I live in the Bible Belt but…I live in an urban area where many mock Christianity. These days in some areas Christians have to be very brave. It is not a faith for the wimpy.

  20. Hi all. Welcome, Jo. I know a couple who are missionaries in your area named Johnson. Not sure where in PNG they are, though.

No one has answered Chas’ QoD, so I’ll take a stab at it: Bill Hayes was a singer who also starred in a daytime TV show. Does that help? Obviously, I have no clue who he is either.

Days of Our Lives, for like 40 some years. Hollywood Squares for a while too.

As a side note, the other 2 to make the chart with the song were Fess Parker and Tennessee Ernie Ford.

There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 of them live in the South.
There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 of them live in the South, plus a couple no one’s seen before.

People actually grow, eat and like okra.
Fixinto is one word. It means I’m going to do that.
There is no such thing as lunch. There is only dinner and then there’s supper.
Iced tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you’re two. We do like a little tea with our sugar. It is referred to as the Wine of the South.
Backwards and forwards means I know everything about you.
The word jeet is actually a question meaning, ‘Did you eat?’
You don’t have to wear a watch, because it doesn’t matter what time it is, you work until you’re done or it’s too dark to see.
You don’t PUSH buttons, you MASH em.

All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, insect, or animal.
You carry jumper cables in your car – for your OWN car.
You only own five spices: salt, pepper, mustard, Tabasco and ketchup.
The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but require 6 pages for local high school sports, the motor sports, and gossip.

  24. Random, yes, you did say that. In response to my comment that my dad, who has never been known to say such things, told folks he thought it was a miracle, what is happening in this family. My dad was quite concerned when my step mom became a believer at age eighty. He thought he had picked a sane woman until then. He is not exactly surrounded though as she and I are the only believers in the bunch. Unless you include my husband and the oldest four and several of the eleven. But that still leaves my brothers and their families, and my sister’s family.
