Good Morning!

It’s finally Friday! 🙂

On this day in 1614 American Indian Pocahontas married English colonist John Rolfe in Virginia.

In 1792 U.S. President George Washington cast the first presidential veto. The measure was for apportioning representatives among the states.

In 1955 Winston Churchill resigned as British prime minister.

And in 1984 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Los Angeles Lakers) became the all-time NBA regular season scoring leader when he broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 31,419 career points.

  1. It’s Friday.
You know what that means? A big day for me.
The sweetest woman in the world is coming home to her grouchy old husband.
🙂 I got the kitchen cleaned yesterday afternoon.
-already been to the Y since I don’t have to wait on slowpoke.
    Lions today, as usual.
She’ll stop in Greenwood to see her oldest sister (86), then come on in this afternoon.

  2. Good Morning everyone. It is Friday! That means Chas goes to the Y and Peter posts the funnies. It also means that it is the last day of a very long and stressful week. Will be glad to get this one over. Monday is a new day and hopefully I can relax and go sailing with friends tomorrow and church on Sunday should be low key. After all the CEO’s won’t be there 😉
Some weeks ago the Schizoid iPod was stolen. Hubs went to Best Buy yesterday to surprise me with a new one. He could buy me an iPhone for just a little more (I actually NEEDED an iPhone for work but was too cheap to buy one). Last night I tried to get to know my new phone. iTunes combined my account and Mr. P’s account so the only thing that downloaded to my iPhone was the music I have bought through them. PLUS I had to work my brain and remember my Apple password! Such problems to have.
In the meantime I got to know Pandora on my other cell phone (which now belongs to Mr. P) I loved that you could just type in a name and hear related music
. Of course BG isn’t happy about the recent turn of events. She has been on a campaign that she needed an iPhone. Offset this by a post on FB from an acquaintance that is a kindergarten teacher locally. One of her “babies” told her yesterday that he couldn’t go on the field trip because there was no money in his parent’s wallet. Then he told her when payday was. She paid for his field trip but was upset that a 5 or 6 year old knew about when payday was. Makes you think about how we spoil our children and perhaps cheat them out of some knowledge they should have doesn’t it. BG’s comeback when I tell her I can’t afford something is to ask why I can’t put it on a credit card.

  3. Good morning. A little excitement on the compound today. Some brush and trash needed to be burned, so they did it early this morning (I was awakened by the bang as the gas used to light it exploded). Afterwards, going through the ashes, they found the charred remains of a huge black mamba, a female just laying her eggs (a charred egg was found nearby, and her body was swollen with more). For your information, the black mamba is the deadliest snake in Africa, with toxins that kill humans in 2 to 4 hours after being bitten, and is very aggressive, as it has no natural predators. As we go into that area regularly, we are grateful for the Lord’s protection.
That makes the third venomous snake killed on the compound since I’ve been here (Confirmed to be venomous – I still don’t know whether the one I killed in my house was a young green mamba or a harmless bush snake, although I thought I saw fangs on it.). The other snakes were a puff adder and a king cobra.

  4. Praising God for His hand of protection on all of you, Roscuro.

I’m off to Bible Study this morning. First Peter now, after spending literally years in Philippians! We go slowly and dig deeply.

Have a blessed day, all. 🙂

  5. I am in what my book-reading friend calls my “African phase.” I’ve read several memoirs about growing up and life in Africa – Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, When a Crocodile Eats the Sun, Speak Swahili, Dammit, and a few others that don’t immediately come to mind. I find them fascinating and think about “our” Gambian missionaries alot as I’m reading them.

  6. Whoops! Correction, that should be just cobra (the king cobra is found only in Asia). They identified it as a cobra because it reared back and spread its hood before it was killed.

Ricky, the only poisonous snake in Canada is the rattlesnake and it is only found in one peninsula in southern Ontario – so this all a bit of a culture shock for me.

6 Arrows: The pastor at my home church has worked his way through I Peter, Ephesians, I Timothy and Galatians, Hebrews, as well as the entire Gospel of John, on Sunday mornings, going verse by verse. It is a wonderful way to study the Bible.

  7. Good morning. I’m under the weather today. My allergies were absolutely awful yesterday. I’m assuming it was due to the dust created by the guys building the bookshelves. And the smell from the staining was intense. I could hardly catch my breath from coughing so much. I took an Actifed and it did nothing, so then I took some Benadryl. 45 minutes after the Benadryl, I was able to breathe normally again. However, this morning I felt pretty bad and took my temperature and I have a fever of 101. I’ve run fever with allergies before, so I know it’s possible. I’ve got really swollen glands in my neck, which can also happen from severe allergies. Uhg! I feel like going back to bed! I’ve got a Depo-Medrol (steroid) dose pack which would help reduce inflammation, but I don’t want to take it if this is an infection, since steroids reduce one’s immune system. I have it because sometimes my neurologist uses Depo-Medrol to stop a cycle of chronic migraines. Guess if I get worse, I’ll have to make a trip to the doctor. I just hate going.

Having lunch with Becca today at school, our usual Friday ritual.

Linda: I’ve also read “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight”; it’s a sad book.

Roscuro: Glad y’all are all safe. Praising God for his protection!

Kim: My youngest, age 8, thinks she needs a cell phone! I told her it would be a very long time until she gets one. (We didn’t get our older daughter a phone until jr. high). Quite a few kids in her grade (first) already have iPhones. What does a seven or eight year old need a phone for? I think it’s absolutely ridiculous for a first grader to have a cell phone. Some of the girls in her class at the local public school carry Coach purses and Vera Bradley backpacks. I think it’s too much too soon.

  8. Phos, there are Prairie rattlers in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta and Western Diamondback (?) rattlers in the interior of BC as well as the Eastern Massassauga rattlesnake in Ontario. I would wear snake gators while hiking in Grasslands National Park because of the number of rattlesnakes there. Amazing creatures – not nearly as scared of them as I am of bears 🙂 And rattlesnakes don’t always rattle before they strike! I sure am glad we just have garter snakes up here – they’re rather cute and I know they eat pests that I don’t like. So thankful no copperheads or mambas, cobras or brown snakes! I don’t think I could handle those.

  9. Annms, my husband had swollen glands this past week while we were staining and finishing our kitchen floor – maybe it was allergies 🙂
By the way, our floor looks amazing and feels sweet to walk on in sock feet!

  10. Sick at the thought of African snakes and grateful for the safety in Phos’ compound.

I go on Africa reading kicks, too, and have read the same book. It all seems so foreign to my conventional life!

Lots of rain here, lots of writing– good days. My blog will be up soon describing the fight going on here yesterday!

  11. Yes we have our share of Vera Bradley around here…
Snakes? Kill ’em all and let God sort them out. However I am not opposed to a nice pair of shoes or handbag.

  12. I’d like to tell you I have no idea who Vera Bradley is.

I’d like to………. But no. She’s the matching bag/purse/coin purse lady with the funky patterns. I have 2 ladies who introduced me to her. Nice, but expensive in my male opinion.

  13. Now as for snakes…..

My son and I were fishin’. A snake appeared. I crushed it with a rock.

My son says “Was that one poisonous?”

I said, “I have no idea, but I’m not going to take that chance.”

My son says, “Oh. Well I guess that makes sense.”

And we went back to fishin’.

I have the same rule for spiders.

  14. Kare – Thanks, I was wondering if they had any rattlers in western Canada. My siblings went hiking on the Bruce peninsula and took pictures of the signs warning of the Massassauga rattlesnake – it was so unusual to have to worry about the snakes. All we have is the garter snake too.

Michelle – Actually, life here is more similar to Western life than it is different. The women here may cook over open fires and draw their own water, but they love to sit and gossip about the latest antics of their neighbours as much as the average Western female loves to check the status updates of her friends on Facebook. The men here may wear long robes and have jobs that require manual labour, but they love to gather for green tea sweetened to syrupy consistency and a long conversation with friends as much as the average Western male loves to go to the coffee shop to chat with his buddies. The kids here may not have much in the way of toys, but they play football (soccer) with the same unceasing, monotonous repetition that children in North America play computer games.

  15. I see no QoD yet. So here is one: What would you ask a US Senator who is Republican but sometimes (too often) acts like a Big Spending Democrat? I’ll have that opportunity tomorrow when Sen. Blunt visits our rural county for a fundraising lunch. This will make the first time I have ever contributed to a political party. Unfortunately, he will only be there for an hour because of over-scheduling, but it is not often a US Senator comes to our area, except during a campaign.

  16. Tychicus, As the Spurs were not at full strength, I won’t make much out of last night’s Thunderous win. With Gallinari’s injury I am trying to figure out if a #1 seed is better than a #2. Would you rather play Denver or the Memphis/Clippers winner in the second round?

    Like

  17. RW: With Gallinari out, that 2-3-6-7 bracket suddenly looks more attractive. I’m not very worried about the Clips (still not consistent enough), but the Grizzlies are so physical – even if you survive them, you’ll be pretty beat up for the next round. In the other bracket, the Rockets are no pushover (but I think won’t have enough experience to win a series). So the one bracket looks more attractive, but in the end it might be more important to get home court advantage against OKC. For the Spurs, more than anything else, they need to get healthy (especially Parker/Ginobili). The next six weeks should be quite interesting…

  18. Peter L, you could ask him if he has a way of encouraging constituents to submit ideas to help curb spending. If he does, then you could ask what some of the best ideas are and how he would make it happen.

  19. Tychicus, You are right. The Grizzlies worry me and I was also very concerned about Denver. I wish Dallas would sneak in and play OKC in the first round. Last year, we bought cheap tickets in Dallas for Game 4 (the close out game) from disgruntled Dallas fans. The arena was rocking to the shouts of “OKC” and Mark Cuban was pouting.

  20. Chas, Mother’s trip to your country was a success. She said she got to see more of the Biltmore House than we did in 1967. She ate at Piggie Park in South Carolina and The Pirate’s House in Savannah. The only bad report was that someone had placed a bust of Lincoln in the Houmas House plantation house in Louisiana. I have asked Governor Jindal to confiscate and destroy this abomination.

  21. I have to admit huge amusement about killing a snake because it MIGHT be poisonous. I am sure there are few delights as powerful as being almost completely out of touch with the zeitgeist of one’s own time in every possible respect. I, however, step on spiders because I don’t like their looks, even though most or all of them are “harmless” or even helpful (as in sucking out the occasional mosquito).

  22. My husband has not been too crazy about my single-days method of dealing with spiders: I figure if there are bugs around to be eaten, then they’ll eat them. If there aren’t, then they’ll die. If I know it’s poisonous (e.g., black widow), then I’ll kill it. But otherwise I let it live.

Since my husband does not approve of this method, I now kill itty-bitty spiders and call him to kill larger ones. I don’t like killing things; if he wants them dead, he may kill them. If he isn’t around when I see a larger spider, I tell him about the sighting later but it has a chance to live. Crickets, stink bugs, etc. continue to be caught and put outside. I can bring myself to kill roaches (usually with bug spray or flushing), but fortunately in this house I haven’t had to.
