On this day in 1775 a Continental naval fleet was organized in the rebellious American colonies under the command of Ezek Hopkins. 

In 1807 the U.S. Congress passed the Embargo Act, designed to force peace between Britain and France by cutting off all trade with Europe. 

In 1939 Gloria Jacobs became the first girl to hold a world pistol record when she shot 299 out of a possible 300 points. She was 17 years old at the time. 

And in 1961 James Davis became the first U.S. soldier to die in Vietnam.

In 1843 Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” was published for the first time in England. 

In 1957 Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York City. 

And in 1990 Bo Jackson (Los Angeles Raiders) became the first athlete to be chosen as an All Star in two sports.

On this day in 1862 the first orthopedic hospital was organized in New York City. It was called the Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled. They obviously needed a better name.

In 1865 slavery was abolished in the United States with the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution being ratified. 

In 1912 the discovery of the Piltdown Man in East Sussex was announced. It was proved to be a hoax in 1953. 

In 1957 the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania went online. It was the first nuclear facility to generate electricity in the United States. It was taken out of service in 1982. 

And in 1998 the House of Representatives began the debate on the four articles of impeachment concerning President Bill Clinton. It was only the second time in U.S. history that process had begun.

In 1953 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decided to approve RCA’s color television specifications.

In 1809 Napoleon Bonaparte was divorced from the Empress Josephine by an act of the French Senate. 

In 1916 Gregory Rasputin, the monk who had wielded powerful influence over the Russian court, was murdered by a group of noblemen. 

And in 1960 a United Air Lines DC-8 and a TWA Super Constellation collided over New York City, killing 134 people.

On this day in 1654 a meteorological office established in Tuscany began recording daily temperature readings. 

In 1877 Thomas Edison patented the phonograph. 

In 1944 a single-engine plane carrying U.S. Army Major Glenn Miller disappeared in thick fog over the English Channel while en route to Paris. The true fate of the plane and its passengers has never been determined. 

And in 1964 Canada’s House of Commons approved a newly designed flag thereby dropping the Canadian “Red Ensign” flag.

On this day in 1636 The United States National Guard was created when militia regiments were organized by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 

In 1809 the first abdominal surgical procedure was performed in Danville, KY, on Jane Todd Crawford. The operation was performed without an anesthetic. 😯

In 1862 an estimated 11,000 Northern soldiers were killed or wounded when Union forces were defeated by Confederates under General Robert E. Lee, at the Battle of Fredericksburg. 

And in 1981 authorities in Poland imposed martial law in an attempt to crackdown on the Solidarity labor movement. Martial law ended formally in 1983.

In 1912 The Mother’s Day International Association was incorporated with the purpose of furthering meaningful observations of Mother’s Day. 

And in 1951 the U.S. Navy announced that the world’s first nuclear powered submarine would become the sixth ship to bear the name Nautilus.
