Psalm 53

The fool says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”
   They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven
    on all mankind
   to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

   They devour my people as though eating bread;
    they never call on God.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    where there was nothing to dread.
   God scattered the bones of those who attacked you;
    you put them to shame, for God despised them.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When God restores his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 4

For your information, Week Four is here. For the first time, the SEC plays, so there are a few of those games. I would have put a fourth, but the others were gimmies (like Alabama @ Mizzou), which doesn’t require putting forth the effort to guess the winner.

Before you forget, get the answers in before NOON EDT Saturday.

  1. Florida @ Ole Miss

  2. Kentucky @ Auburn

  3. Iowa State @ TCU

  4. Army @ Cincinnati

  5. Duke @ Virginia

  6. Florida State @ Miami

  7. Tennessee @ South Carolina

  8. Georgia Tech @ Syracuse

  9. Pillow Fight: UTEP @ Louisiana-Monroe

  10. Tie Breaker (guess winner and final score): Louisville @ Pitt

(And for added fun, count how many times ‘four’ or ‘for’ appear in the intro paragraph.)

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
   He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 3

Another week of limited college football awaits us, Pickled Pickers. Next week the SEC joins the fray, so we’ll have more games to choose from, AT LAST! For now, though, we’ll settle for the minor leagues (with a few exceptions).

Kevin won last week, and since FOXNews says that Michigan was going to get hit by a hurricane (see photo), none of the teams there are playing. Or maybe it’s because the B1G Ten and other conferences up North haven’t started playing yet. Anyway, he picked the tie breaker.

So here they are, the COVID-19 NCAA Week 3 Pickled Pigskin Picks. Remember to have those guesses in by NOON Saturday, 9/19/2020.

  1. Louisiana @ Georgia State

  2. Syracuse @ Pittsburgh

  3. Navy @ Tulane

  4. Boston College @ Duke

  5. Charlotte @ North Carolina

  6. Central Florida @ Georgia Tech

  7. Wake Forest @ North Carolina State

  8. Appalachian State @ Marshall

  9. Pillow Fight: Texas State (0-2) @ Louisiana-Monroe (0-1)

  10. Tie breaker (guess winner and final score): Miami @ Louisville

Psalm 39

I said, “I will watch my ways
    and keep my tongue from sin;
   I will put a muzzle on my mouth
    while in the presence of the wicked.”
So I remained utterly silent,
    not even saying anything good.
   But my anguish increased;
my heart grew hot within me.
   While I meditated, the fire burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;
    let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
   Everyone is but a breath,
    even those who seem secure.

“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
    in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
    without knowing whose it will finally be.

“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.
Save me from all my transgressions;
    do not make me the scorn of fools.
I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
    for you are the one who has done this.
10 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
11 When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,
    you consume their wealth like a moth—
    surely everyone is but a breath.

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;
    do not be deaf to my weeping.
   I dwell with you as a foreigner,
    a stranger, as all my ancestors were.
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
    before I depart and am no more.”

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 2

It’s another week of college football. There are still a limited number of D1 games, so again, there are unfamiliar teams, and some “gimmie”  games, where a D1-AA plays a major school (like #7 below). AJ won round 1, so he picked his two favorite teams as the tie breaker.

Get those guesses in by NOON Saturday, Sep. 12, 2020.

  1. Syracuse @ North Carolina

  2. Georgia Tech @ Florida State

  3. The Citadel @ South Florida

  4. Charlotte @ Appalachian State

  5. Tulane @ South Alabama

  6. Western Kentucky @ Louisville

  7. Missouri State @ Oklahoma

  8. Coastal Carolina @ Kansas

  9. Eastern Kentucky @ West Virginia

  10. Tie Breaker (predict winner and final score): Duke @ Notre Dame

Psalm 33

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song;
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.

For the word of the Lord is right and true;
    he is faithful in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;
    the earth is full of his unfailing love.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the people of the world revere him.
For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord foils the plans of the nations;
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,
    the purposes of his heart through all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people he chose for his inheritance.
13 From heaven the Lord looks down
    and sees all mankind;
14 from his dwelling place he watches
    all who live on earth—
15 he who forms the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.

16 No king is saved by the size of his army;
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18 But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
19 to deliver them from death
    and keep them alive in famine.

20 We wait in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,
    for we trust in his holy name.
22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 1

You asked for it, you got it. No, this isn’t a rehash of the old Toyota ads. It’s the first edition of the not-so-world-famous Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks. We might as well have some fun in this otherwise dismal year. But this first week has limited games. So here they are with some teams that have never been in this poll.

Pick the winners of these 7 games, including the tie breaker, in which you pick the winner and the score.

  1. Eastern Kentucky @ Marshall

  2. Middle Tennessee @ Army

  3. SMU @ Texas State

  4. Houston Baptist @ North Texas

  5. Arkansas State @ Memphis

  6. Stephen F. Austin @ UTEP

  7. Tie Breaker (pick winner and final score): BYU @ Navy (Monday)

Psalm 47

Clap your hands, all you nations;
    shout to God with cries of joy.

For the Lord Most High is awesome,
    the great King over all the earth.
He subdued nations under us,
    peoples under our feet.
He chose our inheritance for us,
    the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.

God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing to him a psalm of praise.

God reigns over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.
The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
   for the kings of the earth belong to God;
    he is greatly exalted.

Psalm 28

Of David.

To you, Lord, I call;
    you are my Rock,
    do not turn a deaf ear to me.
   For if you remain silent,
    I will be like those who go down to the pit.
Hear my cry for mercy
    as I call to you for help,
   as I lift up my hands
    toward your Most Holy Place.

Do not drag me away with the wicked,
    with those who do evil,
   who speak cordially with their neighbors
    but harbor malice in their hearts.
Repay them for their deeds
    and for their evil work;
   repay them for what their hands have done
    and bring back on them what they deserve.

Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
    and what his hands have done,
   he will tear them down
    and never build them up again.

Praise be to the Lord,
    for he has heard my cry for mercy.
The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
   My heart leaps for joy,
    and with my song I praise him.

The Lord is the strength of his people,
    a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
Save your people and bless your inheritance;
    be their shepherd and carry them forever.
