On this day in 1832 the first streetcar went into operation in New York City, NY. It was horse-drawn and had room for 30 people. 

In 1940 German war planes destroyed most of the English town of Coventry when about 500 Luftwaffe bombers attacked.  

In 1968 Yale University announced it was going co-educational. 

And in 1979 President Carter froze all Iranian assets in the United States and U.S. banks abroad in response to the taking of 63 American hostages at the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran.

In 1892 William “Pudge” Heffelfinger became the first professional football player when he was paid a $500 bonus for helping the Allegheny Athletic Association beat the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.  

In 1915 Theodore W. Richards, of Harvard University, became the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. 

In 1931 Maple Leaf Gardens opened in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

And in 1940 Walt Disney released “Fantasia.”

On this day in 1620 the Mayflower Compact was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower when they landed in what is now Provincetown Harbor near Cape Cod. The compact called for “just and equal laws.” 

In 1918 World War I came to an end when the Allies and Germany signed an armistice. This day became recognized as Veteran’s Day in the United States. 

In 1920 the body of an unknown British soldier was buried in Westminster Abbey.

In 1921 the Tomb of the Unknowns was dedicated at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia by President Harding. 

And in 1984 President Ronald Reagan accepted the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as a gift to the nation from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

On this day in 1775 the U.S. Marines were organized under authority of the Continental Congress. The Marines went out of existence after the end of the Revolutionary War in April of 1783. The Marine Corps were formally re-established on July 11, 1798. This day is observed as the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. 

In 1801 the state of Tennessee outlawed the practice of dueling. 

In 1919 the American Legion held its first national convention, in Minneapolis, MN. 

And in 1969 “Sesame Street” made its debut on PBS.

In 1887 Doc Holliday died at the age of 35.

In 1923 Adolf Hitler made his first attempt at seizing power in Germany with a failed coup in Munich that came to be known as the “Beer-Hall Putsch.”  

And in 1965 the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” debuted on NBC-TV.

On this day in 1637 Anne Hutchinson, the first female religious leader in the American colonies, was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for heresy.   

In 1837, in Alton, IL, abolitionist printer Elijah P. Lovejoy was shot to death by a mob (supporters of slavery) while trying to protect his printing shop from a third destruction. 

In 1895 the last spike was driven into Canada’s first transcontinental railway in the mountains of British Columbia. 

And in 1944 President Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first person to win a fourth term as president.

On this day in 1895 George B. Selden received the first U.S. patent for an automobile. He sold the rights for $200,000 four years later. 

In 1946 John F. Kennedy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives at the age of 29. 

In 1963 archaeologists found the remains of a Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. 

And in 1990 Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the Kach movement, was shot to death after a speech at a New York Hotel. His assassin, Egyptian El Sayyid, was later convicted of the murder and was sentenced to life in prison for his part in the World Trade Center bombing.

The header photo is the bald eagle I saw in Florida. I got another shot as he flew over, but it was from behind and you can’t see his head at all. I saw the general area of where he’d landed on an island, but couldn’t find him. Then he came up off the ground and into the tree. I wasn’t quick enough to get him. He was way off, so I just guessed where I thought he went, zoomed all the way, and shot. I didn’t even know I had him until we got home. I love surprises. 🙂

In 1970 former King Peter II of Yugoslavia died in Denver, CO. He was the first European king or queen to die and to be buried in the U.S.

And in 1979 Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 63 Americans hostage (90 total hostages).
