On this day in 1804 the first self-propelled locomotive on rails was demonstrated in Wales.

In 1858 the first electric burglar alarm was installed in Boston, MA. 

In 1947 Edwin Land demonstrated the Polaroid Land Camera to the Optical Society of America in New York City. It was the first camera to take, develop and print a picture on photo paper all in about 60 seconds. The photos were black and white. The camera went on sale the following year. 

And in 1975 former U.S. Attorney General John N. Mitchell and former White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman were sentenced to 2 1/2 to 8 years in prison for their roles in the Watergate cover-up.

And on this day in 1911 Gustav Mahler performed his last concert. He collapsed after the performance from a severe strep infection and died later in May. 😦

On this day in 1792 President George Washington signed the Postal Service Act thereby creating the U.S. Post Office. 

In 1815 the USS Constitution, under Captain Charles Stewart fought the British ships Cyane and Levant. The Constitution captures both, but lost the Levant after encountering a British squadron.

In 1839 Congress prohibited dueling in the District of Columbia. 

And in 1921 “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” was released starring Rudolph Valentino.

On this day in 1807 former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr was arrested in Alabama. He was later tried and acquitted on charges of treason.

In 1846 the formal transfer of government between Texas and the United States took place. Texas had officially become a state on December 29, 1845. 

In 1942 President Roosevelt signed an executive order giving the military the authority to relocate and intern Japanese-Americans.

In 1945 about 30,000 U.S. Marines landed on Iwo Jima. 

And in 1963 the Soviet Union informed President Kennedy it would withdraw “several thousand” of its troops in Cuba.

On this day in 1841 the first continuous filibuster in the U.S. Senate began. It lasted until March 11th. 

In 1861 Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as the President of the Confederate States in Montgomery, AL.

In 1930 the planet Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh. The discovery was made as a result of photographs taken in January 1930. 

And in 1970 The Chicago Seven defendants were found innocent of conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic national convention.

In 1804 a raid was led by Lt. Stephen Decatur to burn the U.S. Navy frigate Philadelphia. The ship had been taken by pirates. 

In 1862 about 14,000 Confederate soldiers surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson, TN. 

In 1923 Howard Carter unsealed the burial chamber of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen.

In 1959 Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba after the overthrow of President Fulgencio Batista.

And in 1960 the U.S.S. Triton began the first circumnavigation of the globe under water. The trip ended on May 10.

In 1880 Thomas Edison observed what became known as the Edison Effect for the first time. 

In 1914 The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (known as ASCAP) was formed in New York City. The society was founded to protect the copyrighted musical compositions of its members. 

And in 1971 South Vietnamese troops invaded Laos. They were backed by U.S. air and artillery support.
