  1. Good morning. We’ve had a lot of rain but no power out here although several thousand are out in our county because of downed trees.

Art is still home because of flashfloods affecting the roadways. I think he will go to work soon. Things look brighter out now as the rain spigot has been turning off here for the moment.

  2. Happy Anniversary to R & M, which actually applies to two couples having anniversaries this week!

I hope it is a wonderful day for the Kessler celebration of wedded bliss throughout the ups and downs of lives well-lived in Jesus.

  3. Morning!! Happiest of Anniversaries to you dear RK and Miguel!! And a belated Anniversary congrats to you Michelle and R!! So how many years for you all…do tell!!

In the seventies here once again but the mornings and evenings are downright chilly…perfect autumn weather!

Continued prayers for those in the soggy weather path…haven’t heard from friends and loved ones in the path as of yet but sounds as though you have experience some liquid sunshine in your area Janice! I do love a rainy day here and there but not the too much variety!

Husband and friend are adjusting their plans for the Mt Whitney trek…weather and winds may delay them for a couple days…but onward ahead they shall go! My job is to bake cookies for their adventure…so off I go to the kitchen!

  4. I will say that returning to the beginning was an opportunity to reflect on the last 49 years–how we got to where we are today, were we planning to have this life (????), and to remember all the twist and turns God put into our life.

When I wrote Loving God Without a Label–which several of you have read (inspired by an argument with NJLawyer on WorldMag blo)–I commented that we can best see the hand of God in the rearview mirror of our lives.

I’ve used that observation in many memoir classes I’ve taught or discussions I’ve been in.

Similarly, we’re in a great spot in our marriage and it was an opportunity to reflect on all the crazy turns and big switches that we can see were orchestrated by God.

Married for so long, we can look back and see the errors (few–because the Lord was in most of them) but so many many joys.

I like to say R and I began a conversation in 1971 and we have not stopped talking since.

    Thanks be to God.

Now–back to catch up on life. I’ve been on 29 flights since Easter. I have a writers’ conference in November and I think, I think, I’m home for the rest of the year .

When you spend time trying to hear the Lord’s voice and direction, all sorts of amazing opportunities open up.

    So thankful for so much.

Other than the trio–Father, Son, and Holy Ghost–no one has blessed me more than my husband.

(Through thick and thin, all the kids, Boy Scouts, travels, books, and especially the submarines . . . LOL)

  5. Husband and I took a drive around the dirt roads trying to find a hint of color on the front range…not to be had!

As we were driving around a not so close friend texted me saying she had just heard and she was praying…I had no idea what she was talking about but suspected my friend with Parkinson’s /dementia had passed away. A few hours later my “close” friend texted my other close friend and and me and told us of our friend’s passing this morning around 4am…I was stunned and saddened. Our “close” friend had been at the facility texting everyone in her Bible Study group and others but didn’t think to let us know….

I am sad and at the same time thankful that her journey is over and she now is in the presence of our Lord…To God be the Glory!

  6. That is a very sad way to hear the news, NJ. I cannot imagine why it would have been handled that way. It totally is mind-boggling. Maybe later there will be a time to ask why. Perhaps she waited for what she thought would be the best time of day to relate upsetting news. I did that with Art a few weeks ago when I had to inform him of his worker’s broken wrist. I decided not to tell him at a mealtime or drive time or at bedtime. Mid-afternoon seemed best.

  7. Death can cloud the mind a bit. When my sister-in-law was dying, a few weeks before she died, my brother asked me to be the one to let our siblings know, and I said I would. I still had dial-up internet, so the day I knew was her last, I stayed off the internet. At some point, my brother called and asked if I had read his post on the blog he had been keeping. He’d posted on the internet before calling me! And then when my brother-in-law died, a friend in my sister’s church posted publicly for people to pray for their children (five of them, ages 5-14) since my sister was on the way home to tell them their father had died–she’d rushed to the hospital in hopes to get there in time, but hadn’t. The household didn’t have internet, but still that could so easily have gone wrong. But really, people sometimes just don’t think.

Sorry for your loss, and the months leading up to it, NJ. Death is ugly.

  8. Happy anniversary to both R & M’s! Wow, 49 years.

My husband and I will celebrate 15 later this month. Honestly, I never thought we would get there (I didn’t know when I married him how long he would live, and four years ago he nearly died). We wanted to return to our honeymoon cabin for our tenth anniversary, but we were in isolation because of Covid and so he said maybe for our 11th . . . but that was when things turned worse for him. We got a quick trip to Nashville (where I’d been living when I met him) a couple of weeks before our 11th anniversary, and didn’t know that would probably be our last time for him to be more than a county away from home.

But even in the harder medical times, God has been good and I still have him.

Also, when I was younger I thought the ideal family size would be two boys and two girls (though honestly I might have gone for more had I married young–four seemed the minimum but also a nice family size); at some point, still single and getting older, I figured I’d be happy with just the two girls. So then I married my hubby and got the two girls. And now the second of those is about to marry, so we’re getting the “two boys” too. Also, our firstborn is pregnant with #4; they never find out in advance the sex of their child, but if it’s a boy, they’ll have their two girls and two boys too.

  9. We had a visiting pastor today. He was so good that I wish he could be on staff at the church. It encourages me to get to hear those pastors who are so skilled at getting God’s word out in an understandable way and emphasize the importance of both the Old and New Testaments.

  10. My day ended reminiscing over old photos of my sweet friend along with looking at photos of the four of us. One video was of me and my dear friend jumping on a trampoline on my 60th birthday….we were laughing until we wept…oh the joy of hearing her laugh once again!

We were known as the Montague’s Ladies. Four friends meeting at a local coffee shoppe sharing life. We started this well over thirty years ago…husbands would get home and we would take off! We met as often as we could but never less than once a month…sometimes weekly some times every other week.

We’ve had many adventures…adoptions, death, divorce, weddings, children going astray, you name it we did it together. So the one who dreamed up this adventure has left the three of us to journey on until we meet again. Death is ugly and in the midst of it all you learn things about others…how we handle it and how we don’t. But at the end of the day we are bonded together not only in life but most importantly in our relationship with Christ. Iron sharpening iron…

Thanks for your kind words of comfort. And Cheryl I am so thankful the Lord brought you and your husband together for His perfect purpose…it is a blessing to have watched it unfold and how sweetly He has brought your through…
