He’s much better as an evangelical than a Catholic especially given the church’s social teachings but he along with some tech bro ie Theil, seemed to have found a home in the Catholic church — I just find it puzzling as they clearly aren’t welcome.
Yeah Reid is confused but to be fair, the current gov’t is confusing and dysfunctional — at times paleo-conservative, other times neocon and occasionally borderline fascist. But almost all the time pretty incompetent.
The Minneapolis video is interesting — I wonder who is behind it. Although they give the usual few minutes to crime, they centre on property values especially commercial, which makes me think the video was produced by real estate developers and investors.
The comparison to Detroit is amusing. I know in the American discourse, Detroit is still viewed as synonymous with failure and decay but its actually been slowly rebuilding in the last decade.
The issue for commercial property decline has less to do with crime and more to do with the decline of middle management office work. Office space has high vacancy rates everywhere as people continue to work from home and software / AI has streamlined/automated what used to be tedious human work. Our premier ordered provincial workers back to the office not because of declining productivity but because the downtown core needed a boos — restaurants, parking, office space, etc. Thus the issues in Minneapolis are fairly common in most large urban areas.
Btw, Minnesota along with most “blue” states has much better social-economic indicators than most “red” states.
I am sad that you have had to watch such a decline, Kathaleena. We have had a mix of bad and good here in Atlanta with a balancing act of a very blue metro area and a red state. It is far from perfect, but growth and thriving can be seen all around, actually too much. We are not ready for the next big thing in our area to open maybe in 2027 in the property that housed the oldest enclosed mall in Atlanta just a mile from us.
I too was amused by the Detroit comparison, living about half an hour away from the city. When they said “Look at Detroit”, I thought the point was going to be how to make a comeback, not to look at how bad it was.
Crime is still a problem. But economically the city is making a real comeback, and blighted neighborhoods are being rejuvenated. It’s made great progress in the last ten years.
The popular outgoing Democratic mayor of Detroit is running for Michigan governor next year as an independent. Governor Whitmer is term-limited after two terms. Should be an interesting election year.

Maxine Waters is 87 years old……time to go home. The American gov’t on both sides of the aisle in all three branches has far too many people who should go home and spend time with their grandchildren. I’m including the president, senators, and house reps not to mention some judges.
From the left side of the internet I’m led to believe that illegal migrants do not get free medicare and its a non-issue; the Democrats are not arguing in favour of it. In other words its a red herring thrown out by the Republicans to confuse the issue. The Republicans control every aspect of the government, they need to take responsibility. Perhaps not golfing this weekend or calling the generals in for what looks like a performative speech that could have been an email or an online appearance.
