Not sure why people think union spending and school spending are related. By law unions are responsible to their members only (I’m sure the laws are similar and probably stricter in the US). Thus they can only spend on things that advance the collective interests of their members — negotiations, advertising, political contributions, etc.
Classroom supplies are the responsibility of the administration/school board and state. Teachers usually get a budget to purchase supplies and most supplement that amount with their own money. For the union to get involved might actually be illegal and would at the very least absolve the government of their responsibility.

The tariffs were always illegal or bordering on illegal as the power of taxation belongs to the legislature not the executive. It’s why Trump always couches his executive orders in terms of national security or emergencies as most of them encroach on legislative powers. Its also why most countries including Canada are negotiating slowly …. they think some if not all of the tariffs will eventually get thrown out or modified.
Since Trump has a habit of firing the messenger, most statistics coming out now are untrustworthy. For example, GDP went down 0.5% in the first quarter yet now they are predicting a year end growth of 3.3%??? That’s a serious rebound. On the other hand, GDP in 2023 was 3.2% so that Biden economy was already humming along. It matters not; GDP is a really horrible stat with not much basis in reality.
Inflation was already at 2.5% last year and has remained at that level (2.3 to 2.7) since then. Again Trump inherited a good economy. It remains to be seen if his drastic changes will be good or bad. However, you can’t raise sales taxes (ie tariffs) without significant inflation pressure.
Gun-free zones are a joke. Its a political posturing pretending to do something but accomplishing nothing — much like sending the National Guard to rake leaves at the capital. An actual assault weapon ban like the one during the Clinton era would do something. When the assault weapon ban expired in 2004, mass shooting deaths went up by 239%. Ban assault weapons everywhere and you have a solution; create gun free zones and you have a street sign an international tourist would take and post with the caption “only in the US”

The Snopes article includes plenty of links to back up their assertions. The article included a variety of ways of counting “mass shootings,” not only the one in which gang shootings were included.
I agree. We need to consider what we post on social media and elsewhere in light of our professional responsibilities and how it reflects on us both personally and professionally. He should be reprimanded and cautioned however his posts are not enough for him to be fired. He engages in legal activities with consenting adults — he just needs to show more discretion.
As I pointed out, this particular administration really can’t hold their staff accountable when they have their own issues in this regard. And since these issues involve non-consenting children, the Trump admin needs to clear the air on the Epstein files — RFK who is in charge of the CDC is in the files.
When it comes to statistics, definitions and dates used are always important. I’ve seen both the stats presented by Kizzie and AJ — both are probably correct but they are derived from different definitions and time periods.
The definition of a mass shooting ranges greatly — some only count a shooting if there is a death, others will count it if three people were wounded/shot, often mass shootings involving a terrorism or robbery are excluded. Given the different definitions I’m not surprised to see the FBI say there was 103 mass shooting definitions in 2021 but a group called the Gun Violence Archive counted 706 deaths. My guess is the FBI excluded robbery/terrorism deaths. The stat cited by AJ cites only mass school shooting which narrows the number of deaths even more and favours the point they are trying to make.
The second thing to look at is dates. AJ’s links use only the last two years. The two groups cited by Snopes go back at least a decade. The longer the time period considered the more accurate the demographic survey. Over the longer period of time, men, usually white, are responsible for mass shootings. Are trans-men catching up?? Perhaps its social contagion or emulating their white male peers?
To clarify — despite both claims being accurate; the Snopes data is better since it presents two different scenarios/definitions and uses a longer time period. Its clear AJs data is stacking the data to prove a particular point.

Lol — Gorka has an agenda. He won’t accept “CNN facts” — but he creates his own; he’s not interested in any mass shootings that don’t involve a Christian school, a very narrow data subset. The FBI data is 103 deaths in mass shootings in 2021– and they don’t include shootings carried out in the commission of other crimes — so gang violence is probably not included (I find the preoccupation with gang violence a dog whistle). Gorka’s fact during the interview is seven shooters of a trans nature (whatever that means) in the last couple of years (an ambiguous number). Again definitions and time periods are important — what is a mass shooting? what is trans? what are the years involved? The Snopes article has a longer time period and uses two definitions; it’s far more objective than using a “couple of years” and “Christian school shootings” only.
That so many trans (however you define it) should be involved in Christian school shootings is troubling no matter the time period. Trans is a very small percent of the population, and Christian schools are also a minority in education. It’s not a matter of redefining what we think about mass shootings. Those things do need long term data. Policy changes need long term data. But simple security upgrades such as was denied to the private and charter schools in Minnesota is another matter. There’s not a good excuse for Walz denying resources that were readily available to tax paying citizens for their protection.
Your side seeks to deflect from the fact that almost all the school shootings in recent years have been by deviants. You’re including gang violence and cases that don’t really apply to the issue at hand, which is deviants shooting up schools and targeting unarmed children.

Not sure if this is a technical term but “circular confirmation” should be one. Person A will make a claim, B will cite A, C will cite B, D will cite C and when A is challenged they will cite B,C, or D. And the circle continues until a political leader will mention it and the faithful are even more convinced. Much of the claims I read from “X” links follow this progression. When I’ve traced “X” claims in the past, I’m left with that impression; which is why i rarely bother anymore.

As I mentioned before, counting mass shootings depends on an organisation’s definition. Low end numbers like the FBI don’t usually include robbery and/or gang related deaths. It’s a red herring and dog whistle that certain commentators seem to enjoy using.
Even focusing on schools, if you use the long term data (ie a least up to a decade), the demographic most involved is white and male. Not sure how you define “deviant”; for me anybody who shoots up a school is a deviant — I don’t care how they identify according to race, gender, sexuality etc. You have a deviant personality if your solution to a problem is to shoot up a school.
Debra — I disagree with Walz and security arrangements. Even in publicly funded schools, security is the responsibility of the administration and the school board. If we keep pushing responsibility upward we end up with a strong central executive and nobody wants that. Secondly private schools have to be responsible for their own security. Like any private organisation, they should coordinate with local police but that’s the limit of gov’t responsibility for a private organisation.
Those private schools have to have certified teachers who have to meet government standards. They also pay the taxes that pay for public education. They’re entitled to the use of funds—their funds—that every other certified school is entitled to . Just because a community pays for their own private security doesn’t mean they forgo the right to use the publicly funded police.

Not sure why people think union spending and school spending are related. By law unions are responsible to their members only (I’m sure the laws are similar and probably stricter in the US). Thus they can only spend on things that advance the collective interests of their members — negotiations, advertising, political contributions, etc.
Classroom supplies are the responsibility of the administration/school board and state. Teachers usually get a budget to purchase supplies and most supplement that amount with their own money. For the union to get involved might actually be illegal and would at the very least absolve the government of their responsibility.

I rarely trust photos these days especially those that damage someone’s reputation. Most US Democrats are Christians. You may disagree with their political ideas and theology but they are sincere Christians. Creating a bogeyman so powerful that you can’t work across the aisle is not good for the body politic.
The tariffs were always illegal or bordering on illegal as the power of taxation belongs to the legislature not the executive. It’s why Trump always couches his executive orders in terms of national security or emergencies as most of them encroach on legislative powers. Its also why most countries including Canada are negotiating slowly …. they think some if not all of the tariffs will eventually get thrown out or modified.
Since Trump has a habit of firing the messenger, most statistics coming out now are untrustworthy. For example, GDP went down 0.5% in the first quarter yet now they are predicting a year end growth of 3.3%??? That’s a serious rebound. On the other hand, GDP in 2023 was 3.2% so that Biden economy was already humming along. It matters not; GDP is a really horrible stat with not much basis in reality.
Inflation was already at 2.5% last year and has remained at that level (2.3 to 2.7) since then. Again Trump inherited a good economy. It remains to be seen if his drastic changes will be good or bad. However, you can’t raise sales taxes (ie tariffs) without significant inflation pressure.
Gun-free zones are a joke. Its a political posturing pretending to do something but accomplishing nothing — much like sending the National Guard to rake leaves at the capital. An actual assault weapon ban like the one during the Clinton era would do something. When the assault weapon ban expired in 2004, mass shooting deaths went up by 239%. Ban assault weapons everywhere and you have a solution; create gun free zones and you have a street sign an international tourist would take and post with the caption “only in the US”

Gangs shooting gangs is gang violence, murder, too,but to call it a mass shooting is disingenuous.

I agree. We need to consider what we post on social media and elsewhere in light of our professional responsibilities and how it reflects on us both personally and professionally. He should be reprimanded and cautioned however his posts are not enough for him to be fired. He engages in legal activities with consenting adults — he just needs to show more discretion.
As I pointed out, this particular administration really can’t hold their staff accountable when they have their own issues in this regard. And since these issues involve non-consenting children, the Trump admin needs to clear the air on the Epstein files — RFK who is in charge of the CDC is in the files.

When it comes to statistics, definitions and dates used are always important. I’ve seen both the stats presented by Kizzie and AJ — both are probably correct but they are derived from different definitions and time periods.
The definition of a mass shooting ranges greatly — some only count a shooting if there is a death, others will count it if three people were wounded/shot, often mass shootings involving a terrorism or robbery are excluded. Given the different definitions I’m not surprised to see the FBI say there was 103 mass shooting definitions in 2021 but a group called the Gun Violence Archive counted 706 deaths. My guess is the FBI excluded robbery/terrorism deaths. The stat cited by AJ cites only mass school shooting which narrows the number of deaths even more and favours the point they are trying to make.
The second thing to look at is dates. AJ’s links use only the last two years. The two groups cited by Snopes go back at least a decade. The longer the time period considered the more accurate the demographic survey. Over the longer period of time, men, usually white, are responsible for mass shootings. Are trans-men catching up?? Perhaps its social contagion or emulating their white male peers?

Lol — Gorka has an agenda. He won’t accept “CNN facts” — but he creates his own; he’s not interested in any mass shootings that don’t involve a Christian school, a very narrow data subset. The FBI data is 103 deaths in mass shootings in 2021– and they don’t include shootings carried out in the commission of other crimes — so gang violence is probably not included (I find the preoccupation with gang violence a dog whistle). Gorka’s fact during the interview is seven shooters of a trans nature (whatever that means) in the last couple of years (an ambiguous number). Again definitions and time periods are important — what is a mass shooting? what is trans? what are the years involved? The Snopes article has a longer time period and uses two definitions; it’s far more objective than using a “couple of years” and “Christian school shootings” only.

That so many trans (however you define it) should be involved in Christian school shootings is troubling no matter the time period. Trans is a very small percent of the population, and Christian schools are also a minority in education. It’s not a matter of redefining what we think about mass shootings. Those things do need long term data. Policy changes need long term data. But simple security upgrades such as was denied to the private and charter schools in Minnesota is another matter. There’s not a good excuse for Walz denying resources that were readily available to tax paying citizens for their protection.

AJ, do you have ANY references at all that are from credible sources that can be checked? I looked at the people posting and they are just individuals making claims that may be as easily false as true. Have any recognizable, reliable sources verified what these pictures and clips are supposed to be portraying?
Propaganda is rampant. And to avoid it, I am looking for credible sources. Not some guy with an agenda and dubious pics and clips. Has BBC or ANY verifiable journalist taken these pics and clips at face value?
My dad is constantly coming up with ‘news’ about the death of one person or another or scandal involving some religious leader that is fairly easy to debunk. But news about what is happening overseas is much harder to verify. Who do your sources use to verify?

About the late night deportations that were halted by a judge. Rather than allow the children to claim asylum or stay with sponsors or family members here, Trump’s ICE is cancelling immigration hearings and seeking to deport. It seems that the narrative of ‘family reunification’ is not what it appears to be in all cases.

Lawyers for at least some of the children say that’s untrue and argue that in any event, authorities still would have to follow a legal process that they did not.
One girl said her parents, in Guatemala, got a strange phone call a few weeks ago saying the U.S. was deporting her, said one of the plaintiff attorneys, Efrén C. Olivares.
The 16-year-old, who’s been living in a New York shelter, said in a court filing that she’s an honors student about to start 11th grade, loves living in the U.S. and is “deeply afraid of being deported.”
Other children — identified only by their initials — said in court documents that they had been neglected, abandoned, physically threatened or abused in their home country.
“I do not have any family in Guatemala that can take good care of me,” a 10-year-old said in a court filing. A 16-year-old recalled experiencing “threats against my life” in Guatemala.

I wonder why we should believe each of these children when they have people around them (just like the adults) who coach them on what to say? I have no idea of the truth, of course. I am old enough to remember when Elian Gonzolas had to be returned to his father, in spite of his mother dying to get him here. His opinion was not important then. Ancient history, of course.

Yes. However, court hearings for this is not like a court hearing that most people think about. Some illegal immigrants have had hearings and are supposed to be deported and were not. Yet, people still object. I daily pray for those people who do have arrest, decide etc.

Debra – Thank you for all your requests for more real information. Over the years, whenever I have decided to look deeper into one of the posts from X shared on here, what I have very often found is that the videos or quotes used were deceptively edited or wrongly described.

AJ – You keep bringing up the matter of gang killings being included in the mass shooting statistics that HRW and I have shared. It has been pointed out that that statistic was only one among other statistics that did not include gang shootings.

Not sure if this is a technical term but “circular confirmation” should be one. Person A will make a claim, B will cite A, C will cite B, D will cite C and when A is challenged they will cite B,C, or D. And the circle continues until a political leader will mention it and the faithful are even more convinced. Much of the claims I read from “X” links follow this progression. When I’ve traced “X” claims in the past, I’m left with that impression; which is why i rarely bother anymore.

AJ — I’m not sure what you mean by “your side”. I’d like to think any reasonable person is on the side of less mass shootings.
As I mentioned before, counting mass shootings depends on an organisation’s definition. Low end numbers like the FBI don’t usually include robbery and/or gang related deaths. It’s a red herring and dog whistle that certain commentators seem to enjoy using.
Even focusing on schools, if you use the long term data (ie a least up to a decade), the demographic most involved is white and male. Not sure how you define “deviant”; for me anybody who shoots up a school is a deviant — I don’t care how they identify according to race, gender, sexuality etc. You have a deviant personality if your solution to a problem is to shoot up a school.
Debra — I disagree with Walz and security arrangements. Even in publicly funded schools, security is the responsibility of the administration and the school board. If we keep pushing responsibility upward we end up with a strong central executive and nobody wants that. Secondly private schools have to be responsible for their own security. Like any private organisation, they should coordinate with local police but that’s the limit of gov’t responsibility for a private organisation.

Those private schools have to have certified teachers who have to meet government standards. They also pay the taxes that pay for public education. They’re entitled to the use of funds—their funds—that every other certified school is entitled to . Just because a community pays for their own private security doesn’t mean they forgo the right to use the publicly funded police.

Debra — I’ve ignored the posts about the El Salvadorian gentleman, the Guatemala kids, and the journalists as the information I read in other groups is usually completely different so I just chalk it up to disinformation. But as you point out, if the gov’t followed due process in an open court we could actually know what is going on…….
Picking up McKinley as a hero is an interesting choice; in the end he gets assassinated. But the Gilded Age is a good analogy for today.
