  1. “We’re gonna get the drug prices down,” Trump said. “Not 30% or 40%, which would be great. Not 50% or 60%. No, we’re gonna get them down 1,000%, 600%, 500%, 1,500%. Numbers that are not even thought to be achievable.”

    Because they are not achievable.

This is one piece on this, but there are plenty more. Wondering if there was more said that would shine a different light on this.

  2. Just wondering how it would be figured if they trashed current over-the-top expensive drugs and replaced them with safer and less expensive drugs, if that could possibly make those percentages work? I am no mathematician, but perhaps someone else here has more expertise.

  3. 100% would be the full price, getting the drug for free. There is no such thing as 1,000%, 600%, 500%, or 1,500% in this context. The drug companies would be paying us to take their medications.

  5. My meds–which, frankly, have been around for 100 years–finally showed up yesterday, two days after I ran out.

They’re protecting, not keeping me alive, so no big deal for me.

We always were told US prescriptions were more expensive because “we” paid for the companies to develop the drugs over years. They needed to get their “pay back,” which I agree, in principle.

Except, why did their “pay back” take so long?

And how is the rest of the world able to get them so cheap?

And why do they need to advertise these miracle drugs?

Companies should make money–and invest it in their business–that’s common sense.

    But . . .

  7. I am thankful to not be taking RX prescriptions but I know many who must. My BIL was a pharmaceutical exec and always gave us the excuse of research for exorbitant prices .

I did take a prescription for 30 years. It was developed in the 50’s and still cost me 8.00 a pill which is cheap in comparison to many drugs. My doctor was actually shocked when I told him the cost… he had no idea…

  9. Drug prices in the US are far higher than anywhere else in the world. Longer patent protection is one reason but the main reason is the refusal by successive US gov’ts to use bulk buying to ensure discounts.

Ontario is the largest single purchaser of pharmaceuticals in North America. It uses this status to leverage bulk buying discounts from different manufacturers. Once Ontario sets the prices, other provinces, private insurers and independents also get some discounts.

It has been proposed several times that the US gov’t use the same technique to give American consumers lower prices but so far both parties have blocked any attempts. I believe Bernie Sanders has tried this several times but has been blocked each time.

Of course, Trumps rambling promises have been brought to you by Epstein……. anything to distract.

  10. Let’s be real — the whole Paramount settlement is a grift. No apology or admission of wrong doing was made; it was a simple cash giveaway. The Colbert firing was a possible extra bonus or one made to grease the ways for an upcoming merger. The American media, centrist at the best of times, is being bullied and they are responding in what they think is the best for their bottom line — profit before principles has always been their calling card.

Bullying the media is not new and has been done by Orban, Erdogan, Putin, Modi etc. All figures some in the Trump admin admire.

    • Haha, just the response I’d expect from you, HRW.

They acted biased and against equal time requirements in federal law. Too bad, the law is getting enforced again.

That’s what the extra 20 million will be, equal time guarantees, and they admit Trump has some free air time coming attheir expense, due to their bias.

  12. AJ — correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the fair reporting act/policy (can’t remember the exact name) repealed over a decade ago? How could you sue for bias unless its defamatory and libelous — which is quite difficult under US law (its why the Dailymail, a UK paper, uses a US website). Then again if CBS wanted to fight the accusations they simply could have pulled a FOX and declared themselves an entertainment network — after all if about 50% of the population no longer finds the MSM credible, than they’re just entertainment at this point.

And then later you admit its lawfare — which was my point, the Trump admin is bullying the media both for grift and for favourable coverage. You say both sides engage in lawfare but does not make it the correct approach by a president. But now I’m curious did Biden or Obama sue any news agencies? Sure they attempted to exclude FOX from the news pool (after all, they were an entertainment network….) but I don’t believe they engaged in lawfare against FOX.

  13. Kizzie, @10:39, yes, 100% if the same drug, but my point was if the drug could be replaced with something a whole lot cheaper that was a safer drug, then you might see those huge percentage savings. Trump thinks outside of the box and in doing so his math may not line up with what others are confined to thinking. Everyone said tariffs would fail . . . somehow he saw beyond the math of the usual thinkers.

  15. I would be dead without one of my prescriptions, unless God performed a miracle.

I saw a disgusting post that was supposedly written by President Trump’s spokeswoman. I looked to see the comments and finally one person admitted it was not at all spoken or written by her. However, the commentor concluded, just because we thought the Republicans or President WOULD say something like it is enough (to condemn them). Well, okay then.

  16. While I certainly do not condone Zionism, I think her conclusion is spot on. In fact, to me, Israel’s moral authority is already badly damaged. This is just the first and last part of her essay.

“The writer is a public health expert and trustee of a philanthropic foundation in Israel

My adult life has largely been defined by two identities. I am a Zionist, whose family has deep ties to the state of Israel. I am proud of the role my family played in the development of Israel. By profession, I am a nutritionist who has worked with humanitarian groups in war-torn countries where access to food is in scarce supply.

Until now, these two worlds have remained largely distinct from each other, but to my horror they have collided. Children in Gaza are starving because Israel’s current government deliberately chose to prevent humanitarian supplies entering the strip for 77 days. The announcement on Sunday evening that “minimal” aid flows would resume to prevent a “hunger crisis” is an admission that famine is the inevitable outcome of preventing the entry of humanitarian aid….
    ……..
By first withholding aid and then agreeing to resume only limited humanitarian supplies to Gaza after facing significant external pressure, the current government of Israel is endangering what’s left of its moral authority. No one should ever make the choice to allow children to starve.”
