~ President Trump’s border czar Tom Homan asserted Friday morning on Fox News that federal immigration agents do not need probable cause to detain people for a short period of time.
“People need to understand, ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] officers and Border Patrol don’t need probable cause to walk up to somebody, briefly detain them, and question them,” he said on “Fox & Friends.”
Homan was speaking in response to a question about an anticipated ruling from a federal judge in Los Angeles that could order the Trump administration to pause immigration raids. ~ The Hill
A clap out should be the absolute minimum one receives. If laid off staff get nothing but a box to carry out their personal stuff, I’d call it a toxic work environment. In almost all the work places I’ve been in, staff would pool money to buy plants, flowers, wine, gift cards etc for laid off and surplus staff. Lower mgmt would find a little bit of cash to supply a corporate gift. An impromptu staff mtg would be held for a thank you and gifts. In the school systems, there are assemblies so kids and parents can say good bye. All of this should be an expectation not an extra. Any less and you are being treated more like an input as opposed to a human.
When the gov’t head in charge of a paramilitary force asserts that probable cause is not needed to detain people; alarm bells should go off.
Language, occupation, skin color, etc are not probable cause. You can’t round up brown people picking strawberries or hanging out at Home Depot – you need evidence ie you need to do leg work
Sure, its much easier if the police can just round up people and then sort them out later, but really do you want to live in a totalitarian state?
When import sales taxes go up 300%, revenue does go up (or up 86% averaged yearly). But then there is a this weird sentence
“The Treasury Department noted that the month benefited from calendar adjustments, without which the deficit would have been $70 billion.”
I have no idea what calendar adjustments mean but something tells me people should wait for the year end numbers before celebrating. First time I have seen Republican supporters celebrating increased taxes — weird world this has become.

Or maybe she was not yet aware of that?
BTW, AJ, there have been plenty of times when your posts have not told the whole story, or even twisted the story, but to the best of my recollection, no one has blamed you personally for that. As I have said before, you really need to put down those stones.
AP: Trump says he wants to deport ‘the worst of the worst.’ Government data tells another story
~ There has been an increase by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since Trump began his second term, with reports of raids across the country. Yet the majority of people currently detained by ICE have no criminal convictions. Of those who do, relatively few have been convicted of high-level crimes — a stark contrast to the chilling nightmare Trump describes to support his border security agenda. …
… The latest ICE statistics show that as of June 29, there were 57,861 people detained by ICE, 41,495 — 71.7% — of whom had no criminal convictions. That includes 14,318 people with pending criminal charges and 27,177 who are subject to immigration enforcement, but have no known criminal convictions or pending criminal charges.
Each detainee is assigned a threat level by ICE on a scale of 1 to 3, with one being the highest. Those without a criminal record are classified as having “no ICE threat level.” As of June 23, the latest data available, 84% of people detained at 201 facilities nationwide were not given a threat level. Another 7% had been graded as a level 1 threat, 4% were level 2 and 5% were level 3. … ~
Your criticism of X amuses me Dj, especially after the way your approved media has crapped the bed of late, pushing lies and falsehoods. RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA!
At least X doesn’t get Pulitzers for lies, like several of those justifiably dying newspapers do. Your industry made a mockery of journalism, not X. But please, continue, I mean look how well that’s working out for you guys.
““Microsoft laid off 9000 engineers this week. I don’t see anyone crying or having ridiculous ceremonies. What nonsense. Good riddance.”
That’s not quite true. There has been a huge uproar over the Microsoft layoffs, especially as they come after one of the company’s best quarter profits ever AND Microsoft promptly applied for H1B employees to replace some of them. If the current administration is so fond of American workers one would think those H1Bs would be promptly denied.
All media, whether X or more mainstream must be verified these days. With the advent of AI and podcasts, people who are not critical thinkers and meticulous about verification will be at a disadvantage. And research takes time. So it is important to know sources that are tend to be more reliable.
The tech industry has long been bringing in foreigners to work in our country. I heard and read about that complaint long ago. I also know people who work in tech (one laid off for over a year now) and have been told that the field is saturated. It is a field that you have to upgrade your skills all the time.
We went through many layoffs and there was no big celebration for any of the workers. Mostly what we heard is that we should move where the jobs are. Difficult to do when your home is suddenly worth nothing and, in spite of resumes all over, no one is hiring. The older you are, the worse that gets. The assumption that because you work in government, you should never get laid off, seems quite strange to me. I am sorry for those going through it, although sometimes it is an impetus to something better.
I am sure there is a lot of injustice in some of it. In my state the teacher’s union insists that white, straight men get laid off first. Anyone in the many categories of so-called disadvantaged will stay. Too bad for our children that the best educators are not the ones to stay. Of course, that is not true with seniority and tenure, too.
Gavin Newsom (two days ago): “We prosecute criminals that break child labor laws.”
Response on Twitter: “You obviously do not prosecute criminals that break child labor laws, because ICE had to do that for you (at a weed farm). Stop supporting child slave labor. Stop being evil.”
(Same respondent): “Stay on this issue. They will double down and triple down on defending the use of trafficked children in drug farms accused of inhumane conditions, b/c they cannot tolerate the loss of their perceived monopoly on moral authority.”
According to Tom Homan, ICE has already found over 10,000 missing children.
“Glass House Farms was the marijuana growing operation that got raided yesterday. They had a class-action lawsuit filed against them for failing to pay wages and failing to provide breaks.”

I was sorry to hear of the passing of David Gergen this week.
He had “one foot in journalism, the other in politics” as it was said, serving 4 presidential administrations (of both parties).
Among the comments made about him: He was not a screamer.
He spoke sensibly, calmly and treated others with respect on all of the political panels on which he served, something I really do miss in this era.
Someday I hope we get back to a more respectful political dialogue.
But he’ll be missed.
