Yes, and farmers have a difficult time keeping them fenced in if they want water or food. I used to live fairly close to a restaurant whose basic purpose was to serve buffalo (bison was not what it was called). They did serve beef as well. The buffalo burgers were good.
That is quite a beast! I would love to try a buffalo burger. How is its flavor compared to beef or venison?
We had breakfast with my brother at Old Hickory House. We had a wonderful time with a lot of laughs over my brother continuing to call a cousin Geraldine when for years she’s gone by her preferred shortened name of Geri. He said he did it to keep from confusion over when he spoke of our cousin Jerry who died when we were little kids. So I said you choose to honor the dead rather than the living? I told him years ago that she wants to be called Geri, and all her siblings have told him. I had no idea he still uses the name she hates, but at least I know why now. I feel sure the others must think it is just to be aggravating.
Oof – that picture brought back memories. We lived in Elk Island National Park for 17 years and always had to have our heads on a swivel when outside. There were 5 very grumpy bison bulls that hung around the staff housing (too old to compete in the big herds). One day I had to drive right up to the school bus so my kids could get off and home safely. Those bulls are huge and their personal space is very large.
When driving through a herd, aim for their rear ends and they will tend to move forward out of your way.
It’s also really cool to just park your vehicle in the middle of a herd in late July – early August when they are in rut. The bulls roar and chase each other. It always felt like I was in Africa or somewhere.
These are busy days and nights with son home. We made it to the closest library today. It’s great to spend time in places where we spent many hours when he was young. I found several books about cooking with an Instant Pot.
There were bison EVERYWHERE we went in the Black Hills/Badlands. Once or twice they were in the road. We even saw babies.
And I learned the difference between bison and buffalo. There are only bison in North America. Buffalo are only native to Africa and Asia.

I had a buffalo burger while in SD. As mumsee said, a lot like beef. I think there is less fat so it needs a little more seasoning.
