  1. 🙂 I had such a nice chat with my granddaughter when she called to thank us for a birthday gift. She is really struggling with a microbiology class at college. She never had to study much in high school and has yet to find a way to retain knowledge for these tests. She is fine in all her labs and other classes, however.

🙂 My grandson texted a nice thank you for his gift. The difference between male and female shows up.

😦 I sure miss seeing all my grands.

🙂 They are good kids and doing what they need to do.

  2. 🙂 Neighbor (other side) has landed a full-time job as a baker at Universal Studios. He’s the 40-year-old who has had so many drug and other problems in the past but, so far, seems to be back on track following a long court-ordered rehab and for nearly a year now has done well staying again with his mom.

🙂 I dog-sat his newer dog yesterday while he went up for more orientation interviews (they were initially concerned about his background check but sounds like they’ll be giving him a chance). He’s had experience working in restaurants and loves to cook.

The dog sitting went fairly well, Nico (Lab mix) and Abby rough-housed for a few hours, tirelessly; but at the very end of the day, when I was indoors for a break from the two of them and they’d quieted down finally, Nico managed to get out of the yard. He’s a “climber” and I suspect he used the support beams on the back of my south-side gate to crawl up and over to get himself home (which is where he was when the owner returned to collect him). Sigh.

Dog-sitting demerit for me. “Everything went fine, but your dog is missing …”

  3. One of my daughters was dog sitting when one of the dogs died! She called the owners, of course, being quite stressed and saddened about it herself. They reassured her that it was not unexpected. A friend came over to help her bury the dog in the place in their yard that they wanted it buried. So, dj, you are doing okay with just losing the dog temporarily.

  4. DJ, I hadn’t lived in Nashville very long when a couple from my church hired me to stay at their home a few days, bottlefeed their calf, and watch over their dog and three cats. I think I spent as much in gas as they paid me for the weekend, but in the process of preparing for it I made a new friend.

When they came home, I told them all the news. There was quite a lot of it. There had been a one-car accident in which a driver hit a telephone pole across from their driveway, and I think he died. Their telephone wasn’t working (and that was one of the reasons I had to pay so much in gas, because I had just recently gone freelance and had to keep driving home from their house in the country to check my email). And oh, by the way, I never did see your third cat, and I hope it’s OK–and that’s when they told me they now only had two cats! So, you’d think they would have told me between the preparatory visit on how to care for the animals, and me coming to care for the animals, that I had one less to concern myself with . . .

  5. We had a young newly wed couple stay at our house as caretakers while we were in Salt Lake for a few months, as husband was winding up the Olympic job. I told them the expectations and wrote them down. They called one day to say our dog was missing and had been for several days. He had shot a raccoon under the chicken house and our gun shy thirteen year old dog had taken off and probably had a seizure and was eaten by coyotes. A few days later, they called to say they had run over our shihtzu and it was dead. When I got home, about fifteen baby fruit trees were all dead. They said they had never read the instructions which clearly said to water the indoor potted trees, the old dog was gun shy and had seizures so find her and bring her home if she disappeared (she never left the five acres), and do not have the little dog outside when driving a car. Sad but that is a risk with caretakers, life moves on, lesson learned sort of.

  6. Ok, you have all convinced me that I’ve been doing the right thing all these years in taking my dog with me when traveling. I thought I was just weird, but it turns out I’m responsible. Thanks guys. :–)
