  1. It has been a really crazy week here, and I’m not even sure how much I’ve written about it on here. My husband has been sick for weeks (which is why we try to avoid his getting sick at all); if he misses church Sunday, it will be his fifth week, though he’s feeling a bit better and just might be there. But I likely won’t–I’m sick now. (Not horribly, a light cold.)

But this week has brought the death of the last family member of a 93-year-old neighbor. Her son died in a house fire, and she ended up in the hospital after hearing the news. I have been going to visit her, wearing a mask in case I was carrying anything since my husband is sick, but reluctantly I missed yesterday since the combination of being sick and facing cold temperatures and snow-packed sidewalks wasn’t a good one. But she’s confused and I’m nearly her only visitor, so I’d like to be able to spend time with her.

One of my brothers is in the hospital after being hit by a car while he was riding his bike; he broke four toes and four ribs, and needed surgery on his foot. Another brother faces cancer surgery next week. And my daughters’ uncle (brother of their late mother) died this week after several years of suffering with early-onset Alzheimer’s; it has been several years since he has even recognized his wife.

I missed two planned “events” with friends yesterday (lunch with two, a photo outing with another), as well as the hospital visit. That’s a disappointment, since being shut in with a sick husband for weeks does make “people time” precious (I’ve mostly seen people at church, at the grocery store, and via Zoom), but rest and reading is the priority for now. But prayers would be appreciated, as it has been a lot for one season.

  2. “Father God we pray that your Holy Spirit would move through Cheryl’s household, particularly touching her husband and giving him energy, enthusiasm, and the strength to be himself again.

Thank you for Cheryl’s diligence, her concern for both her sweet husband but also for her neighbor.

We pray for the neighbor as she realizes she’s lost her son. Comfort her, affirm her, fill her with your peace in spite of the circumstances. Give Cheryl the opportunity and words the woman needs and longs to hear, and surround the woman with a sense of your presence and love.

Thank you for hearing our prayers. Continue to bless Cheryl with strength, health, courage, and endurance.

    In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

  3. Meanwhile in LA:

Depression is falling on fire survivors down south. It’s a mess, a scramble, a continuing shock, and, of course, disappointment.

Let’s pray that while all the accusations fly of negligence, the hearts of so many are protected from falling into that trap of bitterness, anger, and hate.

I’m not referring to my family in the third paragraph but responding to what I’m seeing play out in the news and social media.

Bitterness and hatred, revenge, and anger will not heal anyone’s wounds.

My family is just so sad. And they were just opening their hearts to God.

Many of you know how profound grief is and all the things we can do wrong rather than take it to the God who sees, knows, loves, and will never leave us nor forsake us.

    Thanks be to God.

  4. Amen. Praying for God’s supernatural comfort and peace to fall like rain.

And prayers for you, Cheryl, that’s a lot. Praying for your neighbor, brothers and your husband — and your own health to get over whatever you are battling. So much sickness going around this winter, I heard a news story yesterday about a shelter housing many of the fire evacuees who have lost their homes and is now seeing a spread of norovirus, that horrible stomach bug that’s so contagious.

My neighbor is home but discouraged, we talked last night and she told me she’d just been feeling so hopeful in the past couple months — PT for her knees was going well, she was continuing to improve following the stroke in 2021 and that was feeling behind her — when this all struck, the kidney infection and another small stroke.

I’m still not clear from what she’s telling me if she’s been diagnosed with diabetes now as well, she goes back and forth saying it’s pre-diabetes and actual Type 2 diabetes; but if it’s the latter, that is an added serious concern and complication.

This was a milder stroke than the first (which also was considered somewhat ‘mild’), but it’s (again) affected her speech with a setback there after good improvement, so therapy needs to start again on that; the use of her right hand also had a setback.

She and her husband are both exhausted and disheartened. And now, once again, deeply discouraged.

    Prayers much appreciated.

  5. Oh, my, I missed a lot of prayer needs as I was busy putting stickers on envelopes this morning. I am sad to hear all that is going on in the lives of the Wanderers. I add my prayers and agreement to those already spoken♡

  6. The numbers on diabetes have changed from how fussy they treat you from what was true in the last generation.

My youngest daughter is a teacher in a preschool. There is now influenza A and B and Covid going around both in staff and children. So far, she has been healthy, fortunately. I am praying she stays that way and her own family. The staff is quite stretched, as you can imagine.

  7. I’m at Prague airport about to fly to England for my mother-in-law’s 90th (and to see three of our grandchildren!). My wife is already there. Please pray for our time with the relatives – they are Anglican “high church.” (Pray also that I’d have a supernatural understanding of the English being spoken through a Yorkshire accent!)

  8. Praying and remembering when we took the Scottish step mom in law to Scotland with her many assurances she would translate for us, only to find she could understand less than we could.

  9. Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.”

  10. Speaking of safety, please pray for Nightingale’s drive to work in the morning. I don’t know how well the roads will have been cleared of the snow by then, or how slippery they might be. (We started with rain before the temperature dipped and the snow came, so I am wondering if the roads under the snow are going to be icy and slippery.) Thank you.
