We’ve had a string of older people passing on to eternity with Jesus at my former church (where I attend ladies’ Bible study). Please pray for all the people who are grieving fresh wounds of loss this Christmas season. I am remembering how it was when my mother passed on Dec. 26.
My mother-in-law is out of institutionalized rehab and with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, where rehab will continue the next few weeks. They took her to a facility to consider living there, and she decided she would rather continue to live with them (which they were offering). It will be quite a change for all of them–especially since they have had fairly active social lives, and weekly overnight care for grandchildren. So prayer that it all comes together with a minimum of tension and stress!
prayer here. Hoping to get these two settled in some other quarters within the year though we had hoped to offer them a home as long as they wanted/ needed.
God can change hearts ( ours or theirs or both) but we don’t expect to be here forever so they will probably eventually need something. Sooner or later.
As families and friends gather and join in person, around tables, even online on our favorite blogs and social media sites, this season (and always) — most likely not all believers — this thought from Leviticus came to mind:
~ “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” ~
Apparently, daughter in North Dakota had a neighbor lose their trailer to a fire. The fire destroyed one side of the daughter’s camper and everything inside to smoke damage. I have not heard otherwise so assume all family members are safe. I thought they went to Texas but guess not. Prayer for eyes being opened to the need for Christ.

How many of us think of the fact that HRW, who participates on the News/Politics thread, is a sojourner among us, and should be replied to with respect and grace?
HRW is treated just fine. He never appears offended, thin-skinned or whiny. I deeply respect that even when I disagree with his position. I wish we all demonstrated that level of fortitude. I’ve had some very pleasant conversations with both HRW and AJ in the past few days, so let’s not ruin it now with finger pointing. Please.
That portion of scripture (Lev. 19:33-34) been on my mind especially since Trump began promising mass deportations and won the election. And I have been praying that God will protect his people especially, and that no harm will come to those who have caused no harm. I pray grace for our peaceable immigrants—illegal or not. We are not a people who reject immigrants for we were all immigrants ourselves.
Debra – Yes, HRW is quite gracious and calm, and seems to let things roll off his back. I really wanted my comment not to point to anyone specific, but to be a reminder to us in general.
However, in response to your comment above, I will say that in addition to sometimes testy replies aimed his way, he has been accused of “lying” many times over the years for merely disagreeing or seeming to be wrong or mistaken. There have been a couple times, at least, when it turned out that further comments/reports showed that HRW had been correct, not mistaken and certainly not lying. But no apology was forthcoming.
We cannot judge the offensiveness of a comment by the reply it may receive. There are people who reply to offensive comments with grace while recognizing privately how ungracious and rude the other person was being.
And while I also appreciate HRW’s forbearance. To be honest, he’s put up with some harsh treatment here.
As a believer, I don’t subscribe to that tired old saying about politics being a “contact sport.” It shouldn’t be among us. We can (or should be able to) disagree and debate without the personal harshness.

Debra (@5:06) your comments like these often perplex me.
But it is refreshing to see you (@5:32) taking a view of what immigrants are facing that goes against the more one-sided tide found here.
May we all challenge our own (political) biases with Scripture more often, myself included.
