  1. Well good morning for the first time from me.

Glad it’s Thursday, but I’m still waiting to see if my story idea is going to pan out today, sent out the inquiry to the port late yesterday as senior editor wants something on what we call “the budget” for the following day first thing in the morning, even if it’s only a tentative story.

I think rain is coming tomorrow for us, but today looks cloudy and it’s much cooler than yesterday.

  2. Impressive!

I’ve seen the one where a cat is wiggling his butt getting ready – ready – ready to jump across to another high spot … and … and … he jumps! – plummeting straight down and out of sight.

  3. Ugh, sorry Janice, that is so annoying.

Someday there will be house robots to take care of all those pesky things for us so we’re not sitting on hold for long periods, then being told we have to call somewhere else …

And our “names” are now our birthdates. I remember calling over to my old GP’s office, being greeted by the folks at the front desk who knew who I was, “Oh, hi D” and then getting pretty much what I needed quickly as the doctor was probably just down the hallway and they could give him the request right away.

Meanwhile, it’s kitten season hers and all the shelters are seeking bottle feeders for the overflow.

  4. We had strong winds yesterday, as well as cold temps that turned the rain to sleet, and then into snow this morning. A few of us ladies had gathered at the church for our Wednesday evening Bible study, but after chatting a bit, we realized that the rain had turned to sleet, and decided to play it safe and postpone the evening’s lesson until next week.

This morning, school was cancelled, as there were branches down on some streets, and the dangerous precipitation was still coming down.

  5. Just heard a low rumble of thunder, but supposedly no rain until tomorrow morning; winds blowing our way in a couple hours. Cloudy and cold.

Trying to deal with having to write 3 stories today/tomorrow without getting call backs.

  6. Re our discussions about manual transmissions yesterday, we have a military museum in town — on the hillside grounds overlooking the ocean that was a WWII Army base and still has much of the infrastructure, including underground tunnels; and the big gun mounts used for the coastal defense back in those days, into the Cold War era.

Anyway, guy who ran it was a good source (alas, he’s moved to Texas) and was telling me once that they were having such a hard time finding volunteers who knew how to drive the stick shift vehicles they had as part of their collection — trucks, jeeps, etc.

He said many of the young guys apparently aren’t learning how to drive manual transmissions anymore.

  7. One of my brothers drove for UPS for years, and he offered to teach younger men to drive stick. It’s a skill I never learned–never had opportunity.

When I was looking to buy my first car, I was limiting my options to automatic. The neighbor who taught me to drive said learning standard was fairly easy, and it might give me a cheaper car. She looked in the paper for one that was for sale, and took me to test drive it. She drove it first and showed me what happens if you brake without engaging the clutch . . . and in the process she stalled the car and couldn’t restart it. We had to walk back to the seller’s house. They told us, “Oops, sorry about that. We haven’t driven the car for a while and the battery is probably low.” But I missed my driving lesson and never did test drive a standard car.

Years later I had a guy friend who drove manual transmission, and I asked if he could teach me. He told me he wasn’t going to let me “ruin” his car. So I just never had the chance to learn! But it’s less and less an issue unless someone wants to drive a truck for a living.

  8. Nightingale can drive a stick shift, and she actually prefers it. That’s one disappointment she has about our car, which is an automatic. But she is determined to buy a standard next time around.

  9. BTW, I’m not an expert, but I’m pretty sure all the grass in the header photo is the same grass (not cattails)–in other words, don’t eat it unless it happens to be something else edible.
