  1. Sobering Janice….

“Such treatment of Christians is what he warned of in his dissent in the Obergefell v. Hodges legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015, Alito said in “reluctantly” concurring with the court’s decision not to hear Missouri’s appeal Feb. 20.

“In this case, the court below reasoned that a person who still holds traditional religious views on questions of sexual morality is presumptively unfit to serve on a jury in a case involving a party who is a lesbian”

Alito wrote. “That holding exemplifies the danger that I anticipated in Obergefell v. Hodges, … namely, that Americans who do not hide their adherence to traditional religious beliefs about homosexual conduct will be ‘labeled as bigots and treated as such’ by the government.”While the High Court indicated in the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that it should not be used to discriminate against those holding biblical views of marriage, Alito said he’s “afraid that this admonition is not being heeded by our society.”

Alito had predicted in his dissent that the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling would “be used to vilify Americans who are unwilling to assent to the new orthodoxy.” The decision, which equated the denial of same-sex marriage to the denial of equal treatment for African Americans and women, “will be exploited by those who are determined to stamp out every vestige of dissent,” Alito wrote in 2015.

Alito called to mind Obergefell v. Hodges after the Supreme Court declined to hear Missouri’s appeal of a court ruling that dismissed two jurors in a 2021 employment discrimination case brought by Jean Finney, a lesbian. In the original trial in the Circuit Court of Buchanan County, Finney’s attorney successfully moved to strike two Christian jurors for cause, arguing that “there’s no way” anyone who sees a gay person as a sinner “could ever fairly consider a case involving a lesbian plaintiff.””

  3. There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

  4. The Lord hates those things, true. We should be certain we are not doing them.

But such were some of us and we are redeemed.

We are told to pray for our enemies.

  5. I think that when we read about those things that the Lord hates, we are supposed to examine ourselves, not look at others.

Pretty sure that a while back I mentioned that YA had shared a couple scripture verses that “resonated” (her word) with her. One was the verse about it being harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter Heaven, and the other was in a similar vein, being something that did not apply to her, but pointed towards people she disliked. (That one might have been about not praying in public for the attention, but I’m not sure now.)

I remember being surprised, and realizing that she was applying verses like those to others, but didn’t seem to be looking into the mirror of scripture at herself.

  6. Nikki Haley: We all know that you were helped by both Independents and Dems jumping in and voting for you, so please be honest – only a small number of Republican voters voted for you in your home state.
Do the decent thing and drop out.

Haley is a tool of the globalists and their Dem puppets, who are providing nearly all of her funding and pushing her to continue when it is clear that she has no chance. Almost any other candidate would already have dropped out.

  7. There are many disaffected Republicans — the resistance.

LA Times: … it’s not hard to imagine that a miniature version of Bernie-mentum may be taking hold in the 2024 GOP presidential race. Haley is giving anti-Trump Republicans, many of them women, a place to go. The question is whether she will also give enough of them a place to stay — even after Trump is the party’s official nominee.

  8. DJ,

Why does your “resistance” continue to look away from the political prisoners Biden’s DoJ has imprisoned unjustly?

The resistance is the same old tired Never Trump nonsense. They all know things were better under Trump, yet they stand by while Biden and Dems run the country into the ground. Sorry, but the resistance’s principles and moral compass is broken. They will allow the further degradation of America because they can’t get over their Trump hatred. They’re not the good guys here.

And why does Haley get a pass from women on her multiple documented affairs, especially since Trump’s are the reason many of these same women give for not voting for Trump?

It’s hypocritical as all get up.

  9. Alito raises an interesting question – can a juror be fair and impartial if a plaintiff intrinsically is against their beliefs. Personally, I would think a decent human being can disregard behaviour, ethnicity, etc if it was not part of the actual claim or trial. The linked article doesn’t state what was the issue. If the plaintiff’s sexual behaviour was part of the issue, I can understand why the lawyer moved to dismiss two evangelicals on the basis of bias. It’s a good move by a lawyer. And to be fair, I can see the same motion be conducted against a Muslim. However, if sexuality was not part of the claim, then a move to dismiss would have to have a high standard of evidence or reason.

And if I was defending a slaughterhouse, I would move to exclude any Hindus. I would also move to exclude on the basis of ethnicity if ethnicity was part of the issue. I think we can agree a member of the KKK should be dismissed from a jury in the case of affirmative action, discrimination or hate crimes. But can you dismiss a KKK member if the plantiff is an African American but the issue has nothing to do with race or ethnicity — tough call.

  10. I need to remember to leave my initials — HRW when commenting.

The only difference between Haley and Trump is their view of the 2020 election and J6. Haley is also more pro-life than Trump in abortion legislation. Any disgruntlement by Trump supporters is not policy based. And not rational if they wish to see the Republican party succeed. A Republican ticket with Haley on top is a winner. With Trump, they will lose the House and winning the Senate will become more difficult than it should be.

  11. It will be interesting to see what happens to the “Republican” Party, or rather what’s left of it, post-maga and post-trump. Though I suspect it may not last even that long, the party is no longer viable in terms of a conservative-moderate coalition that can win elections in a pluralistic society. (Though if the demise of Maga comes sooner rather than later, it may still have some tatters left to piece together.)

But I suspect that possibility is over.

But I suspect something new will have to be formed after we get beyond 2024.

As for Haley, many of us see her as a firewall within the party — though it was interesting, as a few commentators have pointed out, that they stayed clear of overtly mentioning the “Republican” party in her remarks last night. Some speculation has it that she is being courted by No Labels — which would pull conservative/moderate/independent votes away from Trump should that scenario unfold.

    Interesting times.

  12. Trump is now the party “establishment.” It’s “his” party, correct?

    Well then, here’s the problem:

(WSJ) The results “revealed that the former President presides over a divided party, and the fault isn’t Ms. Haley’s. … “

“A Fox News voter analysis found that 59% of Ms. Haley’s voters say they wouldn’t vote for Mr. Trump if he is the GOP nominee … “

“Ms. Haley’s main case against Mr. Trump is his personal behavior and divisive brand of politics. Mr. Trump isn’t likely to change that, which may explain why his campaign against Mr. Biden has already taken on apocalyptic negative tones. By the time November arrives in a Biden-Trump race, both sides will be predicting hellfire-and-damnation if the other side wins.***

There’s no denying that Ms. Haley faces an uphill battle in a party in which Mr. Trump and his allies have become the establishment. It’s long past time to retire the media trope that Donald Trump is some insurgent against the establishment. When you’ve been President and may be the three-time nominee, you’re as establishment as it gets.”

That is unfair. and not true for most. As I have said before, disliking Trump and not supporting him does not necessarily make one a Never-Trumper or mean that one hates him. It is possible to have different political views without one side having broken principles and moral compass.

As I wrote elsewhere a little while ago, no matter who is eventually elected, God is the One ultimately in control.

  14. So 60% of Haley voters, or or single digit % of overall Rs won’t vote Trump. That’s not the big swing the Fox thinks it is

Haley supporters are suckers falling for the NT/Dems ploy.

“New: AFP Action will stop spending to boost Nikki Haley’s presidential bid.”We don’t believe any outside group can make a material difference to widen her path to victory,” senior adviser says.”

    Even they see the obvious.

  15. Most polls are +/- 2% for Biden/Trump but more interestingly most polls only add up to about 90%. The missing 10% “I don’t know” etc are Haley, Kennedy etc supporters. In the end they will probably vote for Biden.

Since 2016, Trump supported candidates have more or less lost. The Democrats have over-performed the polls especially since 2020. If young people and women come out to vote, Trump or his approved candidates lose.

The Republican might survive a Trump candidacy but will definitely survive a Haley candidacy. Since both support similar policies, I don’t understand the insistence of some to support Trump and heavily criticise Haley. If you support Republican policies, you should support the party over person. As someone who thinks the Democrats make just a wee bit more sense, I’m amused but still completely puzzled why any Republican would support Trump

  16. As for those who think re-electing Biden will be the downfall of America, many on the Democratic side said the same with the re-election of Bush. Biden may lean to the left of Obama and Bush may have been to the right of Clinton but neither were driven by personal gain over country. We may argue whose policies were worse for America but motivation is not the issue. Trump on the other hand….

As for the Trump approved Republican members of Congress; they can’t even run a committee let alone a country. They’re so incompetent that they are the perfect anti-American candidates.

  17. No one suggested we do not pray for our enemies.

God does not hate that which is mentioned in Proverbs just pointing to believers…He hates that which is written for all mankind.
To suggest we should look in the mirror and not have an opinion or observation of others is unfair…the assumption we do not examine ourselves seems to be judgmental…the very thing some are being accused of.

I hate the hands that shed the blood of the young student in GA. Would I hope the bearer of those hands find true freedom and forgiveness in Christ? You know that answer…yes.

Sure I have read harsh and opinionated words written by believers on social media. Even here. But I have read far more kind words than harsh.

  18. NJ - I am sorry. I did not mean to insinuate that others here are not examining themselves. I meant it in a general way, that all believers should be sensitive to what the scriptures may be telling us about ourselves personally.

  19. I hate what my daughter is doing to her family and how she uses people and then destroys them. But I can’t hate her. When I find myself slipping into that, I have to return to the Cross and ask forgiveness and for help with my attitude. Hating her won’t hurt her, if anything, it will build her case that I am a horrible person. It does hurt me. It takes my eyes off Him, distracts me from loving those around me, occupies my thoughts and drags me down.

Jacob have I loved and Esau I hated. God can do that. I don’t know His reasons and I cannot read hearts. I must leave that to Him lest I despise one He has set His heart on. But I can hate what they do and that they are held captive by the evil one.

  20. The Christian life is sometimes a walk, though rarely a ‘stroll;’ it’s most often, when we’re awake enough to be aware, an outright war as it is so easy for all of us to slip into the old nature and be influenced by “the crowd” and passions around us. -dj

  21. How someone could not hate what has been done to this child is beyond me. I hate the hands that inflicted this horrific act upon another. The evil embodied in this person is detestable. Yes we hate the evil….and there should and will be consequences. And our govt is complicit….

The accused, José Antonio Ibarra, 26, jumped the border back in September 2022, without showing any papers or passing through customs. That kind of First Class free entry is, apparently, a privilege reserved for ganged-up criminals. You try entering the U.S. without showing your papers sometime and let me know how it works out. You know, in a few years. After you get out of jail.

Anyway, that we know of, U.S. authorities were given at least three chances to stop José before he killed somebody. They failed every single time. The feds first found José near El Paso, Texas, but released him into the general population citing poorly-defined “further processing” under loose Biden asylum rules. José was then arrested at least twice while he was hanging out in New York City, including for a very serious charge of endangering a child, but each time was immediately released without bail, with authorities rushing under local sanctuary-city rules to get José out before any federal deportation process could start up.

Athens police also arrested José’s brother, Diego, charging him with having a fake green card. The University of Georgia had hired Diego to work in the school cafeteria, in spite of his fake green card, his face tattoo, and in spite of the the awkward fact that he’d been arrested in September for drunk driving without a license and separately for shoplifting, and then skipped all his court dates. Guess what happens if a citizen skips their criminal court date?

But it was almost like Diego was sure nothing would happen. For some reason.

  22. Of course we hate what was done. And we hate the direction our country has taken that allowed it. And we hate the dereliction of duty that followed him and his actions. Show me Scripture that we, the work of His Hands, the result of His Word, are called to hate any fellow human. If that were so, we would be called to hate everybody on the planet. Abortionists, man slayers, rapists, domestic violence perps, child harmers, anybody who has ever been angry with his or her brother or sister. There, but for the grace of God, go we.

  23. After checking my handy dandy concordance, I find the only ones we are to hate would be ourselves, our parents, our siblings. But then we are told we can’t hate ourselves. So, I am thinking, not put those beings above our love for God. Not quite the hate we are discussing.

On the other hand, we are to love our enemies, our neighbor, the Lord, fellow believers. Pretty much covers the whole gamut.
