“Imagine attending a Christmas or New Year’s party, learning the next day that someone there had COVID, then waking up the day after that with a sore throat, sniffles, and achiness. It wouldn’t take a genius to piece together what happened. But you’d want to be sure, so you’d reach for that rapid test you wisely purchased last month after the news about Omicron first broke, knowing that the new variant would soon be on your doorstep.
Result: Negative.
Huh. At that point you’d wonder if you had caught the flu or a bad cold instead, but the coincidence would nag at you. Seemingly half the country has Omicron at the moment and all of your symptoms line up with the symptoms Omicron patients are reporting and yet … you don’t have Omicron? What are the odds of that?
It’s happening to people across America, including a few whom I follow on Twitter.”
So to follow up on this: I most definitely have this from the person in question now, am plenty symptomatic, yet tested negative today. Apparently, a recurring anecdotal story right now, https://t.co/YKrKJBPwAe
“Maybe you know someone (or are someone) who’s experienced the same thing. In the middle of a local Omicron outbreak, they have all the hallmarks of a case of Omicron — yet test negative. What gives?
Epidemiologist Michael Mina anticipated that 10 days ago. It’s no surprise at this stage of the pandemic that people with some form of prior immunity would begin experiencing symptoms before they test positive, he argued. The point of the immune system is to mount a rapid response to an invading pathogen; if it’s seen that pathogen (or aspects of it) before, as those who’ve been vaccinated or had COVID previously have, it will react especially quickly. The sore throat and sniffles that accompany an immune response might even occur before there’s enough live virus in their noses to be detectable by a rapid antigen test. And so they’ll end up testing negative despite the fact that they clearly have the virus.”
“The coronavirus that causes Covid-19 can spread within days from the airways to the heart, brain and almost every organ system in the body, where it may persist for months, a study found.
In what they describe as the most comprehensive analysis to date of the SARS-CoV-2 virus’s distribution and persistence in the body and brain, scientists at the U.S. National Institutes of Health said they found the pathogen is capable of replicating in human cells well beyond the respiratory tract.
The results, released online Saturday in a manuscript under review for publication in the journal Nature, point to delayed viral clearance as a potential contributor to the persistent symptoms wracking so-called long Covid sufferers. Understanding the mechanisms by which the virus persists, along with the body’s response to any viral reservoir, promises to help improve care for those afflicted, the authors said.
“This is remarkably important work,” said Ziyad Al-Aly, director of the clinical epidemiology center at the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System in Missouri, who has led separate studies into the long-term effects of Covid-19. “For a long time now, we have been scratching our heads and asking why long Covid seems to affect so many organ systems. This paper sheds some light, and may help explain why long Covid can occur even in people who had mild or asymptomatic acute disease.”
The findings and the techniques haven’t yet been reviewed by independent scientists, and mostly relate to data gathered from fatal Covid cases, not patients with long Covid or “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2,” as it’s also called.”

“I thanked Illinois and New Jersey for proving the pro-life movement’s argument about abortion not being about safety or privacy. Illinois revoked a law requiring notifying a minor’s parent or guardian before getting an abortion. New Jersey now allows non-physicians to perform abortions.
Now it seems pro-choice men want to help END ABORTION! You know, like us in the pro-life movement. We want to END ABORTION.
I’m trying to find the words for this story. Cutting off (literally!) means of reproduction to own the cons.
The Texas pro-life law, which bans abortion after six weeks, has driven men to have vasectomies to prevent unintended pregnancies.
So these leftist men and women are not reproducing and they’re helping to END ABORTION.
My suspicious socialist mind sees the shortening of quarantine from 10 to 5 days as a move to get people back to work despite the risks. Apparently, this is science driven from the CDC and Ontario is considering following suit. Although I know science works by changing its conclusions as data presents itself, concepts such as “first showing symptoms” are based on self reporting and one wonders if we should be more cautious of human observations.
False positives and false negatives have placed current numbers all over the map. The description of the dominant variant is too ambiguous and thus testing is giving us haphazard results, With prior variants, we could look at other data, that is, hospitalization rates but so far this doesn’t seem to be the case with Omicron. As the virus changes to make itself more adaptable to humans perhaps we can slow down a bit with the panic. Right now, I’m waiting for my premier to decide if we go back online on Jan 3, I certainly hope not — its far more work with far less results.
Leftist have always had less children. Urban people tend to lean left and urban people tend to have less children. The interesting thing is this has not changed political polling over time. The best way to predict political polling is to look at the urban-rural split. When social conservatives go to college and then move to an urban area they start to vote Democratic.
I do think leftist men getting vasectomies to demonstrate solidarity is amusing, there are better reasons for the procedure. Most of my friends who are married had a vasectomy after having one to three children. They did it so their wives did not have to take birth control. In all likelihood, many of the men having vasectomies are in similar situations. And even if a man has a vasectomy, its easily reversible or as one of my colleagues discovered not 100% effective. Imagine telling your partner you are pregnant a year after his vasectomy.
Good question.

Several friends got that “surprise,” but all loved the baby when it arrived—even when they were way older parents than they expected to be! Lol
