“A series of attacks on Jews in the United States in recent days, linked to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, has increased pressure on law enforcement officials, lawmakers and the Biden administration to take more steps to quell antisemitic violence.
Since May 10, at least 26 instances of antisemitism have been reported across the United States, from Los Angeles to New York, according to the Anti-Defamation League and news reports. The cases range from protest signs calling Zionists “Nazis” to several physical attacks. There have also been at least four reported instances of vandalism at synagogues and Jewish community centers.
Among those targeted in the attacks was Joseph Borgen, 29, who was on his way to a pro-Israel rally in New York on Thursday and wearing a yarmulke when he was assaulted by a violent mob, he said in an interview.
“They were calling me a filthy Jew, a dirty Jew,” he said, adding: “They said, ‘Hamas is going to kill all of you. Israel is going to burn.’ ”
Borgen said the men punched him, hit him with crutches and sprayed an irritant in his face, leaving him with bruises, a concussion and injuries to his skin and eyes. “I really thought I could have died,” he said.”

I say this earnestly: I really hope that the newsroom at @nytimes will step back and rethink how they write these kinds of stories (attempting to distill expert analysis on a complex but important topic for a mainstream audience) in the wake of this colossal miss.
do you still stand by your reporting that @SenTomCotton "suggested it’s necessary to ask Chinese authorities about the possibility, fanning the embers of a conspiracy theory that has been repeatedly debunked by experts." https://t.co/gi3kJ90XEC
And here @vox secretly changes an article about the lab leak theory to make it less embarrassing.
The post-publication changes places like Vox and @nytimes are making to articles are Orwellian in the most basic sense and need to be called out relentlessly. https://t.co/7LJQ9efht1
“A federal judge in Texas issued a preliminary ruling Tuesday which found that the Biden administration’s nearly $29 billion restaurant relief fund discriminated against a white male restaurateur.
In an 18-page ruling, the judge ordered the Small Business Administration (SBA) relief program to temporarily stop prioritizing funding applications from businesses owned by women and racial minorities, over that of the plaintiff.
U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, found that the plaintiff is “experiencing race and sex discrimination at the hand of government officials.”
“The evidence submitted by plaintiffs indicates that the entire $28.6 billion in the Restaurant Revitalization Fund may be depleted before plaintiffs’ application can be considered for relief under the program,” O’Connor wrote.
The dispute arose after Philip Greer, a white male restaurant owner, brought a lawsuit on Sunday against the SBA over alleged violations of the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.
Greer had sought to apply for the federal relief program after his restaurant, Greer’s Ranch Café, lost nearly $100,000 in revenue during the coronavirus pandemic.
But the program, which is part of the $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed in March, aims to give priority to groups that Greer does not fall under — namely women, veterans and “socially and economically disadvantaged” people — for an initial period of May 3 to May 24.
The judge concluded that Greer was at risk of “irreparable harm” because the entire fund could run out by the time the prioritized groups’ claims were processed.”
“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Monday that aims to punish social media companies for their moderation decisions, a move that Silicon Valley immediately criticized and likely sets the stage for potential legal challenges.
The legislation would bar Internet companies from suspending political candidates in the run-up to elections. It also would also make it easier for the Florida state attorney general and individuals to bring lawsuits when they think the tech companies have acted unfairly.”
He’s exactly why legislation like Florida’s is long overdue. These idiots won’t police themselves.
I take these threats immensely seriously. As a repeated target of violence, it is reprehensible that Twitter allows C-list celebrities to encourage violence against me and my family. https://t.co/e1rQ6uwPdf
Will @TwitterSupport take action against people like @richardmarx who glorify violence against @RandPaul and his family or do the rules only work one way @Jack? Now Rand is the target of violence AGAIN right after a tweet glorifying violence against him went viral https://t.co/3Ltxc0qvjQ
“TikTokers wished a 97-year-old Auschwitz survivor a ‘happy Holocaust’ as some ‘Free Palestine’ supporters target Jewish social media users with antisemitic abuse”
“There has been a sharp rise in the number of antisemitic incidents since the start of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The ADL said that between May 7 and May 14, 17,000 tweets used variations of the phrase, “Hitler was right.”
Jewish creators told Insider that their posts are being targeted with antisemitic abuse.”
“At 97, Lily Ebert is one of the oldest Jewish creators on TikTok. She is also a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, where the Nazis murdered 1.5 million Jews.
Neither facts were enough to restrain the online mob looking for Jews to abuse on social media since Israel’s bombing campaign on Gaza began.
After posting an innocuous TikTok video wishing her followers a restful Shabbat (Sabbath) from her London home, her great-grandson and the account’s administrator said she was flooded with “messages of hate.”
A “Happy Holocaust,” “Peace be upon Hitler,” and “Ask her if she thinks the treatment of Palestinians reminds her [of] the treatment she got in the camps” were some of the comments Ebert received.
The targeting of the Auschwitz survivor is not a one-off; the Anti-Defamation League said that between May 7 and May 14, more than 17,000 tweets could be found that used variations of the phrase, “Hitler was right,” Insider’s Sarah Al-Arshani reported.

There has been a 500 percent increase in the number of antisemitic incidents reported in the UK since May 8, according to the Community Security Trust (CST). Around a third of the 116 incidents took place online, the charity said.
Insider spoke to several Jewish creators who described how the recent rise of anti-Jewish racism online, triggered by recent events in Israel and Gaza, has created an atmosphere so toxic that many are fearful for their safety and have considered leaving social media for good.”

AJ — my point is simple — the cartoon mixed anti-Israeli sentiment with Antisemitism. This is not helpful. When both pro-Israel and pro Palestinian sides conflate antisemitism with anti Israeli. we have the situation where American Jews are harassed, bullied and even beat up. The adults on both sides need to differentiate between criticizing Israel and antisemitism — that cartoon doesn’t help. As long as the adults conflate the two — young men will be stupid and attack Jews. I teach my students to see the difference, this puts the focus on Israeli policy not Jewish religion and culture. And most Jews I know don’t approve of Israeli policy, you don’t have to be a Zionist to be a cultural or religious Jew.
Twitter is a corporation dedicated to profits and shareholder value — ie the capitalist way. If its good for the bottom line they will allow it. Once the drawbacks are higher than the benefits they will ban the politician. Hence they didn’t ban Trump until after the election — he was no longer useful to the bottom line. I don’t understand why the Republican party doesn’t understand basic capitalism. The irony is amusing — the party of the free market wants to regulate social media — the same party less than a decade ago said the energy companies could self regulate.
“Being anti-Israel doesn’t make you an anti-Semite.”
No, but the actions of these scumbags and Dems in Congress sure does.
Stop playing semantics HRW. “Kill all the Jews!” sounds pretty anti-Semitic to me.
