  6. I sent a few flower photos to AJ.

    I drove to the P.O.box at the mall to drop off bill payments. Yes, we still do it the old-fashioned way of writing checks and sending them by mail.

    While out I took some nice shots of dogwood blooms at Art’s church and I found a yard with a hill that is covered in blooming azaleas. The azaleas are always brighter in the other yard.

    The garbage trucks still run on Mondays. Thankfully.

    Art is still doing what he thinks is essential office work. My brother is still doing his errands. And I am doing what most people are doing. Staying home, inside, away from pollen and outside germs.

    While driving through the mall parking lot, I noticed some families were meeting there with vehicles pulled near each other but at a safe distance. They had lawn chairs and maybe blankets for their children to play on (if there were kids). I did not want to stare at them so not really sure who was there.

    Because of my poor eyesight, I have to really look intently at a scene to totally take it in. Most people would think of my action as staring when it is simply processing.

    We finally got into our Infinity box of confusion. I don’t think we have what we need to set it up. I told Art last night that life is too short to get into an argument and I would see what I can do today.

    I have been trying to not get into anything that comes from other locations for about three days to allow any germs to diminish.

  7. The day is beginning to brighten, perhaps the sun is going to come up.
    Daughter is off to work, baby is still asleep, though granny has been up and at em since four thirty in case, because I can’t hear her in her room from my room. Son is still asleep.
    Husband got to stay up most of the night with third granddaughter but fifth and sixth grandsons slept through the night. Now he just needs to get through the day until fourth daughter gets off work, probably earlier today than yesterday.

  8. Those of you who joined us in the last few years may not know about Burt Lancaster.
    Some young lady, may have been someone on this blog. I don’t remember.
    But she said she was smitten by Burt Lancaster.
    Since o one has ever been smitten by me, I adopted the name Burt Lancaster.
    That was years ago. We were still in Hendersonvile.
    But now I can’t get away with it because I now hope a picture and you can see just an ugly old man.
    But I still have the one who counts. Going on 63 years now.
    And 7 great-grands with another girl on the way.
    Burt may be gone now. But Chas has been here and he counts his blessings every day.

  9. Just got off a weekend of work. It certainly is a weird climate in healthcare right now. Two of our nurses are in quarantine, one has been exposed, one came home from holiday just as this all began and developed symptoms by the end of the two week period, but the testing delays mean that she has had to wait for the results to see what she has. It puts stress on the rest of us. But, our patient volume is down. Those who come from the ER say it is dead in there and you are in and out quickly. Due to the screening out of respiratory symptoms to, in order to evaluate if someone has COVID-19, the ERs are no longer overwhelmed. This is demonstrating just how much people go to the ER unecessarily with non-emergency symptoms. Health professionals have been telling people for years, if you have a cold or flu, stay at home, rest, drink fluids, and you will eventually recover, and do not come to the ER unless you are having difficulty breathing; but people have not been made to listen to those instructions before.

  10. I sometimes take my son to the ER when he is having difficulty breathing. That is because I called the clinic once to ask what I should do and they said to take him to the ER. But often, we can deal with it at home. One likes to have the ER available.

  12. Mumsee, I have, in the course of my life, been to the ER quite a few times with difficulty breathing, three times carried there by ambulance. But, while there, I have seen the patients who came because they have had a cold for a few days and think they should be better by now and want to get antibiotics. I have heard the doctors trying to educate them that colds can last for two weeks, and a virus cannot be treated with antibiotics. Those are the people who clog up the ERs unecessarily. Now, because anyone with a respiratory infection has to phone and be screened before proceeding to the ER, all those non-emergent cases are being screened out before they clog the ER waiting room.

    We had Little Miss Friday and Saturday night (because Papa can’t go too long without her). Yesterday we took her back to her Mommy and Daddy. We met them half way. We see Little Miss when we meet her Mommy at her office for pick up and drop off. Yesterday when we met them Daddy got out of the car. I was sitting in the back seat with Little Miss. She saw her Daddy and got so excited. “Daddy!”. She had the biggest smile on her face and started kicking her legs and trying to get out of her car seat to get to him.

  14. I understand and was agreeing with you. The emergency room is for emergencies. Now that they have taught me how to deal with sons’s asthma and given me the tools to do so (though I think osha root seems to be a very good option they did not include), we don’t need to go so often.

    One who was clogging up the system needlessly, in my opinion, was daughter when we had to keep taking her there for her suicide threats. We all knew she was not serious, it was a mental health issue, we were all concerned she could accidentally do herself in. But that is where they told me to take her because we have no other options but jail and nobody wanted her in jail. But I saw it as a misuse of ER and always felt like we were using resources needed for emergencies.

  20. I may have started with the Salt Lake Olympics, that is when my children set me up with email. So that would have been 2002, but I don’t remember if I started lurking then or in Greece. I do recall my first comment was in regard to infant baptism and I think that was in Greece so 2003 or 2004 probably.

  21. I came around in 2008 when it was still at WM, had been reading/lurking on the blog for a while first though, I think, so I felt like I already knew some of you characters.

    I saw your FB post about that, roscuro. This was in our local story from the weekend today:

    ~ At area hospitals, where preparations have been developing for weeks, intensive care units are beginning to get busy with some nurses having difficulty, breaking down at times because of the volume of patients, according to reports.

    “My friends want to quit; they cry multiple times a day,” said one L.A. area nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity because the hospital will not allow the person to talk with the media. “They are having sleep issues, scared they have already contracted the virus because of the risk.” ~

    In talking with Carol last night, she mentioned she was now visiting the vending machines down the hallway, it’s their only source now for junk food and sodas. And Carol somehow got a credit card. So ….

    I told her to be sure to use a napkin or paper towel outside of her room so she’s not “touching” all those buttons and door knobs. But I doubt she’ll remember to do that. It’s hard enough for me to remember to do that and in her situation it’ll probably be more so; plus she probably feels like they’re closed off to the virus that is perceived as being “outside” where they live. But with more than 100 residents + staff inside, germs will invade.

    I sent texted her this link and will remind her to watch it, I think she ignores many of her texts.

    “This ensures continued treatment of patients who have been treated for several years for a chronic condition with this drug, but also allows a temporary authorization to allow certain patients with coronavirus to benefit from this therapeutic route,” said France’s director general of health Jérôme Salomon.

    The move comes after infectious diseases specialist Didier Raoult announced new clinical results, which can be accessed here, that show 78 out of 80 patients treated with chloroquine recovered within five days, reported Trustnodes.

    The five-day recovery time is “considerably” faster “than the usual 14 days and for some it can go up to 28 days if they recover at all,” the outlet highlighted.”

  26. I went freelance in 2003 and it was the first time I’d had Internet at home. I’d subscribed to World for years (I haven’t done so in several years now) and when I saw they had a blog, I checked it out. My mom died in the fall of 2003, and I was already on the blog, so probably sometime summer 2003. Roscuro, I wouldn’t have guessed you joined as late as 2011, so I may be mingling you in my mind with someone else who used to post on World. I was thinking you had started as a teenager, so I must be thinking of someone else.

  27. Yasser Arafat died November 11, 2004. I followed a link about his widow living in Paris to the old World Magazine and blog. I don’t know that I lurked for any amount of time. I probably didn’t because I found a group of people who thought like I did so I wasn’t hesitant to say anything there. Also at that time I don’t think we realized how much privacy we had given away on the internet. I do remember someone warning me that the internet and the blog were not my living room.

  32. Janice, the more recent warnings kept me at home all weekend. I will need paper towels and a couple other things at a store, today or tomorrow, and I may have to go to the credit union a couple towns away unless I receive their ATM card in the mail soon. I need to get some money from that savings into my checking; I could have them mail a check, I suppose, but would like to get the money in my checking account by midweek so I can start paying all those huge bills that come due for me in April, like property tax, homeowners insurance, etc.

    Meanwhile, it’s been 3 weeks since I’d stopped in to drop off my taxes (first saturday in March as I recall) and I have yet to hear back from him. I sent him an email on Saturday asking for an update, nothing back from him yet. ? I will call if I don’t hear in another day or two, I just think it’s incumbent on them to send a quick status report if things are taking longer than they expected for some reason. But I told him in the email that I know he must be swamped and busy …

    Guess I’m used to my ‘old’ neighborhood guy who would turn my taxes around in 2 weeks.

  36. Yep that video put in in a realistic light of how it spreads. I have a wipe in my hands at all times and change them out often when I am on my rare times out ie post office, grocery. We can only do what we can do and try to do it safely. I mean who sneezes into their hand anyway? Yikes! And eww!

  37. I’m curious whether that Israeli ad was put together by medical people. It seems to me that rather than showing how the virus spreads, it exaggerates the “surface contact” angle, which (from what I’ve read) isn’t a big factor in the spread. Now, we are being super-diligent about what we touch (putting the mail on a chair, washing my hands, and not touching it again for 48 hours, for example), but my hunch is that the he touches A, she touches A and then touches B, he touches B and then touches C, and you touch C and get the virus is an unhelpful exaggeration of what happens.

  41. NancyJill, I am thinking of my time in Athens, Greece. They also stuck their chewing gum to the sides of trees planted along the sidewalk. Tree trunks completely covered in wads of chewing gum are not particularly attractive.

I am worried about Carol, I thought they weren’t supposed to leave their rooms but she seems to think “just so you don’t go down to the first floor” and is going to the vending machine (I’m guessing now frequently that she’s discovered her new credit card can be used in it). And her boyfriend in a wheelchair comes to visit at least once a day, she told me a few days ago that they “kissed” when he came in and I told her they need to respect that 6-foot distance, and definitely no touching or kissing. It came up when I was reminding her also to wipe off her phone as I recall the boyfriend is big on taking the phone from you when you’re trying to show him something.

    I don’t think Carol realizes the danger in these homes if this virus finds a way inside. The residents are all so vulnerable — Carol would really be hit hard and might not survive something like that with all over myriad of health issues. I don’t want to scare her but …

  45. Carol used to carry a handkerchief but had the habit, when we were out at a place for lunch, of setting it on the table — it was always wet. I finally trained her that it needed to go right back into her bag, it should never be placed on a table where food was being served or other people would come into contact with it, even in a second-hand way.

    Of course, nowadays especially, this was a few years ago.

  46. The isolation I think will be hard on her also — with her mental issues, even though the day-to-day routine isn’t all that different for her in her condition. But her mind already is off in left field, thinking about how she can get some Easter candy and what new electronic gadgets she can buy. When I was talking to her yesterday about our sermon (which she didn’t listen to or read), she kept going back to the topic of candy and how she could get some. It’s a comfort for her, I know, but it seems that this all is making her mind and thought process very scattered and I’m afraid it will get worse if this situation continues (which it will).

  54. Peter L. Interesting queries. But much of that doesn’t apply to me. The class of’49 was a lit different from the class of ’75.
    I didn’t have a car.
    I worked one summer for $0.50/hr. That wasn’t much, even in those days.
    I did go to all the football games. The North Charleston Blue Devils, for some reason joined football with Chicora HS and they had a huge number of big guys to form a football team. They won the state championship in 1948 and beat the Georgia state champions in a HS bowl game in Columbus, GA
    My favorite artist was Eddie Arnold.
    There were no female musicians at the time, except for Carter Family.
    Like you. I also skipped school once. Went to the beach with KB B Bob M , Juanita O. and a couple of other girls.
    I was extremely shy in those days.
    I had a huge inferiority complex. Mostly because I was inferior to most things that were important in high school
    A hitch in the Air Force changed that.

    Bobby Murray, a friend since 1940, talked me into joining the AF in 1949.
    I left the AF in 1952 a different man.

    Class of: Hmm, well I didn’t complete my GED until I was 19, as that was the earliest age you are allowed to take it. So, that would be 2004.
    School: The Last Resort (family joke). ATI curriculum.
    1. What sweetheart? No friendships with the opposite sex allowed, courtship only.
    2. Drive? I didn’t get my full driver’s license until I had been to West Africa and back.
    3. Waitress in the off season at a Christian resort centre (non-denominational) – we initially got the jobs because another ATI family were directors.
    4. At home
    5. Yes and yes. I sang in three different ATI choirs, and played in the orchestra at an ATI music seminar.
    6. I was a model teen (I was too scared to be anything else).
    7. No.
    8. Dancing was next door to rock music as an agent of sin.
    9. Yes, my skipping of school consisted in reading the wrong subject at the wrong time. As it turns out, I learned a lot more that way.

    11. Reading – History was my favorite light reading, but Biology was my favorite serious reading. Literature was wasting time reading – yes, I spent my teens feeling guilty that I liked to read Dickens and Austen late into the night, as Susanna Wesley (mother of John and Charles) had not read novels.*

    *Later, when reading about the history of English literature, I realized that the novels of the Wesleyan period would have consisted of books like Moll Flanders and Tom Jones, tales which relate bawdy happenings. Dickens and Austen are not in the same class.

  58. I joined WMB on May 31, 2012, exactly 3 months before the blog went kaput.

    Kare and AnnMS joined WMB very shortly after I did — maybe within a few weeks. I don’t know how long they had been lurking before that. I lurked about a year before signing up and jumping into the conversation that same day.

    I believe Jo is the most recent one here, though she may have been lurking since the very early days of WMB. When she came on board here at Wandering Views (all the rest of us, IIRC, started commenting in the WMB days) I think she said she’d been lurking for something like ten years?

Janice – Some things you have written about what your brother has said to you (particularly about that wrong printer paper situation) gave me the impression that he is not so nice to you, and maybe doesn’t treat you with much respect, at least sometimes. That made me sad for you, because it seems like you care a lot for him and his well-being.

    2. What did you drive? A little red Honda Civic. One of my best friends wrote a poem in my autograph book: “[Six] had a little car, It was painted red, And everywhere that [Six] went, The cops picked up the dead.”

    4. Where did you live? With my parents and siblings. They are all younger than I. Well, not my parents.
    5. Were you in choir / band? No, but I was in Orchestra at school. And church choir.
    6. Ever get suspended? No. But a friend (former friend now) wrote in my yearbook one year that I should learn how to mouth off to teachers. Perhaps I would have gotten suspended if I’d listened to her.

  63. Interesting response to question7. Nobody wants to go back. Chuck never said much about his HS experience, even while attending. But he once said, “It’s a jungle there”. (More on that later).

    But once, while he was away at USC, I received a call from one of his classmates. It was about a reunion. When I told Chuck about this, he said, “There’s nobody there I want to see again.” That says something.
    When I got out of the AF to go to college, I chose USC because three of my classmates were already there. All my friends were seniors, so I never had a freshman experience.

And I notice a lot of you still shop. Do you really not have the stuff you need in your house? I knew I was blessed by being married to a hoarder but did not think it so unusual.

  66. That is something else my dad and I disagree on, Chas. He remembers his high school days fondly (and he went to several as they moved a lot but ended at Venice High) and would love to go back to that time. To me, it was just what you did and I would never ever want to be there again or that age. I did finally go to the most recent reunion, my first time to go. It was nice. I am glad I went because an old friend I had long lost contact with was there. She died shortly after, though we did not know she was ill, nor did she. Three weeks of prostrate cancer (that she knew about it).

  69. In 1971/72, I went away to Purdue to get a master’s degree. You (the gov’t )paid my tuition..
    Anyhow. Chuck used to complain about his school experience. “It’s a jungle out there.”
    While at Purdue, during the summer, Chuck came to visit for a week.
    WE talked about the HS “jungle”, stuff. Then I took him over to the Krannert Business School where they have a large, fancy meeting room.
    I said to Chuck. “When you get out of school and get into the world, you’ll find it’s a jungle too. This is the jungle you are in.”
    The things you need for success in the business world are different from what you need in HS.
    He is now a chemical engineer, doing well.

  70. We have not had cable since the 90s so we need to schedule a technician to install our system. But with COVID-19 they are not scheduling technician visits. So we shall wait. I have much practice in waiting. I am suppose to be able to stream but it’s not liking my password/ user info. Art is with clients when I try to reach him.

    And this , too, shall pass.

    I may go try to mow the yard in this horrendous pollen. Or maybe not. The yard is already look looking shaggy again.

  71. Kizzie, my brother has always not been as nice to me as he should have been. It was only after our mother died that we grew closer since I and my family are his only close family. Because he got diabetes at age two and I was 3 and a half then, my parents always told me to try and watch out for his well being. I took it to heart. But truly, there have been times in the past when I thought we would never be close. Art and I have been good to him. He and Art are closer than I ever expected. My brother never liked that Art smoked. But Art hasn’t smoked for over five years now. And they both can talk income taxes together now. It is just a sad situation right now. But thank you for your care even though there seems to be no solution.

  73. I might be one of the newest on here. I think I joined shortly after we moved here in 2011.

    I had my nose swab done this morning – wow. They set up in a community hall with a maze of puckboard walls and yellow footprints to follow. Hand sanitizer and mask and taken back to one of the rooms in the maze for the test, then follow the footprints to the exit on the other side of the building.

    Roscuro, when I worked in a doctor’s office I had one woman call saying she “thought she was coming down with a cold and would like some antibiotics”. It boggled my mind as she was a very ‘normal’ person.

    I was a frequent contributor on a ministry community blog before this that also had a place for anyone to request prayer. I responded often to those requests. Once I found this group of like-minded Christians then I was happy to be here. There were only a few of us who were on the other blog. That ministry was Right From the Heart.

  81. I just got off the phone with one of our pastors. Got lot’s of updates, a few good ones too.

    It appears there was some miscommunication and I missed several updates because they sent them to the email I use for youth group related emails. No youth group recently, so I didn’t check it. Fixed it now.

    The update.

    Covid 19 continues to ravage our small congregation. The 2 worse cases are 2 men I’ve become involved in ministry with over the last several months and was building friendships with. I don’t make friends easily, and this latest news is devastating to me. Glenn is the worst case. His family was informed today that it’s time to take him off the ventilator. The medication hasn’t helped, his condition only worsens. I’m weeping for Glenn’s family and the decisions they must now make.

    My friend Peter, the stereotypical New Yawker, 🙂 continues to be in ICU. Today though he sent some texts, which is a huge improvement for where he was at. Praising God for that and begging him for mercy for Peter.

    There are some others hospitalized too, that I don’t know well at all. But thank God, most are doing well. Some of those who tested positive are already at home, a few completely recovered, including my friend Bill and his wife Didi.

    There is much to praise God and be thankful for, and yet I’m overwhelmed with sadness for Glenn’s family.

    Given that I’m not fully recovered, and this new knowledge, plus the recommendations of the county health bureau to the church, we will contact the Dr. in the morning and go from there.

  82. Submarines— my guy thinks unlikely the pandemic will be kept from them, they receive regular Navy news each day and it would give them broad news.

    You don’t think they would question NO sports scores? 🙂

    Squadron will continue to monitor the family grams, however, as they always have.

    We basically got one 30-word “telegram-like” form a week to send. We mailed them to squadron, where someone read them. If we said something they didn’t like or which might give away sub location, pertinent dates or anything suggesting a code, the family gram would be returned.

    They even checked all the Bible verses.

    Deaths, for sure, will be sent via Squadron, “CO’s eyes only,” and he will decide when to tell the sailor.

  95. My high school class Facebook page had the questionnaire a month or so ago. NO ONE wanted to go back.
    Even the ones I remembered as being popular and “having it all” didn’t want to go back.
    College? Sure I would go back if I could take this version of me. I would study something completely different. I would make different choices. Of course I do believe things turn out the way they are supposed to and if I hadn’t taken the path I did I wouldn’t have BG and without Md P I wouldn’t have Little Miss.
    Little Misses Mommy reports that since MiMi and Papa let her run around the back yard naked and playing in a # 3 washtub of water that she hasn’t wanted to wear clothes today. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    Next up will be ice cram for breakfast because “it has milk in it”.

  96. Kim, I have been so blessed through life that I would be afraid to change anything.
    I wrote an “If” some time ago about how a ruptured appendix worked for good.
    There are similar examples.
    If I had gone to Everett Talbert’s church with the rest of my friends on that Sunday in 1955, I wouldn’t have met Elvera. But I had an appointment and didn’t know it.
    I would be afraid to change a thing.

    “For we know that ALL Things work together for good to them who love God. The called according to His purpose”.
    II don’t understand everything, and don’t want to talk about some of them, like the death of my brother.
    But it worked out.

  103. Looks like I got 100 with that. Don’t remember the last time I did.

    I didn’t like seeing how a couple of the musicians on our church live-stream yesterday were much closer than the social distancing recommendation. They just had too many musicians (though only about 6 or 7 of them) in a relatively small space. Most were able to be about 6 feet apart, it looked like, but there wasn’t enough room for the young woman playing violin to distance herself from anyone else. Her playing is lovely, but she shouldn’t have been in there. Her part wasn’t musically necessary.

    And she spent most of January and February working/touring Europe! She came back early when things started getting bad in Italy, and was allowed to get on a plane home because she’d had no fever, but still… I would think they’d be a lot more careful with how many musicians they have for the live service, especially when one of them returned from overseas not that long ago. 😦

  106. I just read a post on a FB page of which I belong. A neighbor stopped to get gas at a 7-11 in Monument, which is right next to my favorite grocery. The cashier had on a mask and gloves and she told him she was thankful he was taking precautions to keep himself safe. He proceeded to tell her his wife has the virus. She asked him why he wasn’t home…he told her he was the manager and could not afford to stay home. She was berated by many commenters saying she was trying to scare people! I for one will not be going to that 7-11…. 😳
