  1. Morning all. Chas already began our day on yesterdays thread.
Got to walk home in the rain with friends this evening after dinner and dominoes at their house. So nice to walk in the rain and the dark.

  2. Good morning. My life is a whirlwind. I took a few minutes last night to catch up on the blog.

    Happy Anniversary AJ and Cheryl!

Kizzie, my thought have been with you. I think your journey began right about the time Miguel had his accident.

Mumsee, keep doing what you do. I see what you describe every day in the ED.

I think I saw that Janice’s eyes are better. Thanking God for that.

I’d better get back at it. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. Good morning, all. I had an early start at Publix right before the store opened at 7 a.m. They are remodeling the store so there was more activity than I usually encounter so early in the day there. This is a true neighborhood store, not as large as the one at Toco Hills which is a little further in the other direction and serves a larger area although both stores are on the same four lane main drag (does anyone else call it main drag anymore? I assume that relates to drag racing which you don’t see here in the city).

I posted after 10 p.m. last night that it was still 87 degrees. The high yesterday was 96 and it is forecasted to be a high of 97 today.

Friday is my appointment to get my glasses prescription. After I get the glasses I will try for my license again. It will probably take a week for the glasses to arrive after getting the prescription Friday.

  4. I am sorry if my wording isn’t quite right. I got out so early that I did not have coffee to make both sides of my brain functional.

In the Publix parking lot I picked up a penny from the ground. I told Art that I had dreamed about being somewhere and I found little piles of change on the ground that I was picking up. I then told Art I felt like my dream was continuing. I had totally forgotten that dream until I saw that penny.

  5. LOL
It doesn’t mean anything to us, but it typifies the suburban family situation. I was amused by Becky’s e-mail post to all her family.

  6. Fish eagle. Lovely flight shot. The American fish eagle (the bald eagle) is on my wish list for a sharp flight shot. I’ve gotten medium sharp, identifiable (about like that one) but not see-every-detail sharp, and I’d love to. Part of the reason I practice on vultures is to be ready next time I get a chance at a flying eagle!

  7. I’m half asleep still, but then mornings have never been my best time of day.

In earlier years, when I had other jobs, I remember getting up really early and having to hit the road for early commutes. After college, I worked at a publishing company in Hollywood for a few years and had to be there by 8 a.m. I’d stumble through the apartment I rented with a girlfriend, shivering, every morning trying to find my brain while I got ready so I could be in the little VW in time. I’d crank up the car’s primitive heater to blow hot air on me as I took off, needing to make it to work in 45 minutes during rush hour. I developed a system that took me on a wild, twist-and-turn route, mostly on surface streets.

    Majestic photo.

Janice, you could be driving by Halloween!

Speaking of which, a number of houses in my neighborhood have put their Halloween decorations up. When people first began decorating for Halloween, it would only be for a few days before the holiday; now it’s become more like Christmas, a month (at least) in advance.

It used to be traditional to put out Christmas decorations on the weekend after Thanksgiving, but that’s been pushed so it’s earlier now. I really will have to plow through my garage to find those Christmas decorations this year, I should start doing that soon. I couldn’t even find the Christmas tree ornaments last year, let along the outdoor lights (I made do with a couple battery-only strings I picked up at the drug store and some lighted outdoor wreaths hanging on the porch railing. It worked OK.

  8. A couple of people in the system have now told us we can just leave daughter when they tell us to pick her up and it falls into their hands. Bizarre. In other words, that is considered a legitimate way to get the help she needs.

  10. ~ Ioway is pronounced “eye-oh-way.” It comes from the Sioux name for the tribe, which meant “sleepy ones.” In their own language, the Ioway called themselves Baxoje, which means “gray snow.” The Ioway Indians are original people of Iowa and southwestern Minnesota. ~

~ “Ioway was used in sort of a colloquial manner during the earlier part of the last century.
That pronunciation got picked up & spread more widely via the radio, film & popular music segments of show business. Without that media usage, it would probably not have ever been widely known outside of the state. … “

  11. The main drag — yep, I use that expression. Well, I still have in recent years.

Never lived in a city big enough to be mentioned in a song. Fun music here today.

After university concert choir practice this afternoon, I went to the city’s main library and found an interesting-looking book: Why You Like It: The Science & Culture of Musical Taste, by Nolan Gasser.

    From the author bio:

Nolan Gasser is a critically acclaimed composer, pianist, and musicologist. Most notably, he is the architect of Pandora Radio’s Music Genome Project and the chief musicologist since its founding in 2000. Dr. Gasser lectures widely on the nature of musical taste and the intersections of music, science, and culture. He received his Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford. He lives with his wife in Petaluma, California.

At over 700 pages (including a glossary, notes, and index) — close to 650 pages of text — there is a lot to read! I’ll have to mention this book to my former piano student, who has a master’s degree in musicology and is the founder of several different music ensembles. I’m sure the book will be right up her alley! 🙂

  12. I think there are main drags in Ioway.

Oh boy, let the arguing begin — there’s a rumor that a Chick Fil A is coming to our town.

    Gasp.

Not that it will stop anyone, because it hasn’t in the past, be we will all know where the bigots and people who don’t care about bigotry will eat. Boycotts don’t work when it comes to food because people need to eat.

    However,

Your religion does not excuse bigotry.
Your desire for a chicken sandwich does not excuse bigotry.

But, hey, bigotry is kinda popular right now, so people feel safe so long as everyone else is doing it, assuming there is safety in numbers and some level of moral justification.

So, whatever happens, happens. But don’t be surprised if people get a clearer picture of your character. Lots of choices to make, and some people can’t be bothered with an easy ethical hurdle.

  13. DJ, just because everyone else is putting up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving doesn’t mean you have to, does it?! You sound like you think you should be digging them out now. That can wait until November, can’t it?

  14. I’m glad the non-bigots are unprejudiced enough to determine people’s character based on where they eat.

6 Arrows, Michelle and I have had several near misses. I have met DJ (and Tess and Cowboy), but no other California gals.

  15. 11:15 p.m. in Atlanta, and the current temp is 91 degrees. We hit 98 degrees today, the hottest day ever recorded in Atlanta during October.
Another 97 degree forecast for tomorrow.
    Goodnight, y’all!

  16. Kevin, yes, Christmas can wait. But I don’t want to leave the decoration hunt in the garage until the last minute (that’s what I did last year and never could find anything, it was totally frustrating).

I’d like to find the boxes and move them into a place where they’re accessible (again) so the actual decorating process, when that day arrives (I usually don’t get to it until 2-3 weeks before Christmas) will go more smoothly — and it’ll be fun, not a heavy-lift garage excavation project.

Janice, those temperatures sound miserable. I hope you have A/C? I’m thinking you probably have a fair amount of humidity with that heat as well.

Cheryl, yes, it never occurred to me that it would be tantamount to wearing a “BIGOT” sign — the Scarlet “B”? — just for eating a chicken sandwich at Chick fil A. One’s character virtually destroyed during a lunch out as the judgmental masses peer into the windows to take names?

Hard to keep up with the culture these days.
