  1. And in other news…..

Well if everyone is going, they had to dumb it down.

    “Has College Gotten Too Easy?

Time spent studying is down, but GPAs are up.”

“When Jeff Denning, an economist at Brigham Young University, started looking closely at the data on college-completion rates, he was a bit perplexed by what, exactly, was driving this uptick. He and some of his BYU colleagues noticed that a range of indicators from those two decades pointed in the direction of lower, not higher, graduation rates: More historically underrepresented groups of students (who tend to have lower graduation rates) were enrolling, students appeared to be studying less and spending more time working outside of school, and student-to-faculty ratios weren’t decreasing. “We started thinking, What could possibly explain this increase?” Denning told me. “Because we were stuck with not being able to explain anything.”

Stuck, that is, until they started looking at what was happening with students’ GPAs. Despite the aforementioned trends among the college-going population, students were, on average, earning higher grades in their first year of college. “[GPAs are] going up, and as best we can tell, there’s not a good reason that they’re going up, in terms of student behavior or preparation or anything like that,” Denning said.

If grades are improving but there’s no reason to think that students have become better students, an interesting possibility is raised: The unassuming, academic way Denning puts it in a recent paper (co-authored with his BYU colleague Eric Eide and Merrill Warnick, an incoming Stanford doctoral student) is that “standards for degree receipt” may have changed. A less measured way of saying what that implies: College may have gotten easier.”

  2. Merge?

    What the heck is that?

I’m from Jersey, where the on ramp never even slows down. They don’t even know what a Yield sign means. 🙂

And polite drivers?….. Not around here.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2019/07/23/zipper-merge-merging-late-recommended-states-experts/1748026001/

“Commuting in heavy traffic can be a pain and merging can make it even more stressful – especially when it seems that drivers are playing by different rules.

A lane is closed ahead: Two lanes of vehicles will soon be narrowed to one. Some drivers merge early and get to the correct lane as fast as possible, then wait for traffic to advance. Others don’t seem to have a problem zooming ahead and “cutting” in line.

But according to many experts, the driver trying to be polite is probably making traffic worse than the driver who jumped ahead.

William Van Tassel, American Automobile Association Manager of Driver Training Programs, said that AAA recommends using the “zipper” approach to merging.”

  3. I get what they’re saying, but this is unlike a normal relationship where the female gave birth overseas. These men didn’t give birth to the child, a surrogate in England did. That’s not the same as a child still being American even though they were born elsewhere, like McCain or Cruz, because the women giving birth wasn’t an American, and can’t claim anchor baby because she wasn’t born here.

But I’ve no doubt they’ll find some judge to agree with them.

“Gay Dads Sue State Department Over Refusal To Recognize Daughter As US Citizen
Derek Mize and Jonathan Gregg of Georgia filed the lawsuit on behalf of their daughter Simone, who was born in England via surrogate.”

“A same-sex couple in Georgia said in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that the U.S. State Department is unconstitutionally refusing to recognize their daughter’s rightful American citizenship.

The State Department’s policy treats married same-sex couples as if their marriages do not exist and treats them differently from married straight couples in violation of the law and the Constitution, according to the suit filed in federal court in Atlanta. It was filed on behalf of Derek Mize and Jonathan Gregg, whose daughter Simone was born in England in July 2018 via surrogate.

Both men are U.S. citizens and are listed as her parents on the birth certificate. But because only one has a biological connection to her, the lawsuit says, the State Department is treating her as if she was born outside of marriage, triggering additional conditions for the recognition of her citizenship. A State Department spokesperson declined to comment, citing pending litigation.

A child born abroad to married U.S. citizens is automatically a U.S. citizen as long as one parent has lived in the U.S., the lawsuit says. But there are additional requirements if the parents are not married or if only one is a U.S. citizen.

Mize was born and raised in Mississippi, while Gregg was born in London to a U.S. citizen mother and British father and was raised in London with dual citizenship.

The couple met in 2014 in New York, where Mize was living. Gregg soon moved to New York so they could be together, and the pair married in 2015. They moved to Georgia in 2017.

A close friend in England agreed to be their surrogate. Mize stayed in England with her for most of the pregnancy, and Gregg joined them for the final five weeks. Both men were present for Simone’s birth in July 2018 — Gregg cut the umbilical cord while Mize held her. They returned to their home in Decatur, just outside Atlanta, in September.

Preparing to file their taxes in March, Mize went to get a Social Security Number for Simone to claim her as a dependent, he said in a phone interview. The Social Security office staff told him they needed a consular record of birth abroad or a U.S. passport for her and that he would need to get that from the U.S. embassy in London.

The couple brought Simone to London in April, armed with their U.S. passports, their marriage certificate and Simone’s birth certificate. Once the embassy staff realized both parents were men, they started asking invasive questions about how Simone was conceived and who the biological parent was, Mize said. After three hours of questions and waiting, Mize said, the embassy staff said Simone was not eligible for citizenship.

Since she’s the child of two men and not biologically related to both, the State Department treated her as if she was born “out of wedlock,” the lawsuit says. And because Gregg, the biological parent, hadn’t lived in the U.S. for five years prior to Simone’s birth, the State Department determined she’s not a U.S. citizen.”

  4. Everything increases, except the number in govt. being financially responsible.

    https://hotair.com/archives/taylormillard/2019/07/24/budget-deal-looks-even-worse/

“The budget ‘deal’ being touted by President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will do nothing to solve the federal government’s fiscal issues. It’s more likely this ‘compromise’ is going to make problems even worse, especially once the debt markers are called in – whenever that happens.

One of the (if not the) biggest problems in the ‘agreement’ is the fact spending can go up without any worry about hitting some sort of artificial barrier.

    2. The Agreement modifies the discretionary spending caps imposed by the Budget Control Act (“BCA”) for fiscal years 2020 and 2021 pursuant to the table below. The spending cap adjustments are intended to reflect the elimination of the BCA sequester for two years, plus a slight increase in spending for both defense and non-defense programs.

    3. The parties agree to partially offset the Agreement’s modifications to the discretionary spending caps legislation by extending the BCA mandatory sequester and customs user fees to achieve a total offset level of $77.4 billion as scored by the Congressional Budget Office.

    4. The debt limit will be suspended for two years, through July 31, 2021. No additional restrictions will be placed on the Secretary’s extraordinary measures authorities. The debt limit suspension, spending cap adjustments, offsets, and any necessary procedural matters, will be included as part of a single piece of legislation.

Supporters of the bill will say the offsets will help pay for any spending changes. However, this doesn’t appear to be the case if the number crunching by Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is correct.”

  5. When journalists become fiction writers.

    https://www.redstate.com/joesquire/2019/07/25/media-narrative-tell-becoming-fiction/

“The Media Has A Narrative To Tell, But More And More It Is Becoming Fiction”

“We can pretty much guarantee that, as far as the saga of Erica Thomas goes, the coverage has officially ended.

Yesterday, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported that a witness had come forward saying it was Thomas who verbally attacked Eric Sparkes and that she is the one who said “Go back where you came from.” It could very well be that, for lying to the police, Thomas could become the next Jussie Smollett, but it is more likely that this quietly goes away.

Thomas’s story, however, is a story that has become all-too-familiar in the last three years. The media, which has experienced a sudden revival in its urge to question authority and hold it accountable, has lept on every narrative that has proven just how bad Donald Trump is for our country and how toxic his presence has been.

CNN had to retract an entire story filled with made-up accusations about Trump associates. BuzzFeed has not retracted a story saying Michael Cohen told the special counsel Trump ordered him to lie to Congress, but Mueller’s office flat-out denied it and the claim appeared nowhere in Mueller’s report. Those two stories are no longer referred to by anyone, instead having been completely wiped from the memory of most in our media.

As soon as it was revealed that the kids from Covington Catholic did not stop a Native American man and verbally assault him, the story disappeared. People remember the division that came with Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, but few recall the number of frankly laughable accusations made by activists and pushed by attention-seeking media figures like Michael Avenatti. We conveniently that certain outlets reported on intelligence dossiers that were outright salacious tabloid fodder at best.

All of this has been put out since Trump took office, all with the underlying narrative of “Trump Is Toxic, Part One Thousand” and all had one trait in common: They were too good to be true.

It would have been absolutely perfect to the narrative had a bunch of Catholic school white boys wearing MAGA hats berated a person of color. It would have been outstandingly convenient if the pee tape were real. It would have just beautifully fit if Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted a number of women and the accusations came out right as he was up for nomination to the Supreme Court.

    Too perfect. Every last story.”

“Deregulation Nation: Trump Admin Killing 13 Regulations For Each New One

An estimated $33B saved so far”

“One of President Donald Trump’s campaign promises was to roll back Obama-era regulations and to lift a variety of restrictions put in place by the mammoth bureaucracy that is our federal government.

He stated in the lead-up to the 2016 election that he intended to eliminate two regulations for every new one. To date, the Trump administration is far exceeding that goal, eliminating 13 regulations for every new one.

    The Washington Examiner reports:

“We’ve hit 13 to 1,” [Russ Vought, acting budget office director] told a Heritage Foundation conference on federalism. And cutting so many regulations, he added, has saved taxpayers $33 billion.

Departments and agencies including the departments of Labor, Education, Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency have led the war on regulations, according to federal reports.

Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, said that President Trump has a builder’s approach to regulations and federalism.

“It is the best kind because it is real and it’s born of real world experience,” said the former House member.

“The president has it because he had to go and pull a permit to build a building and deal with bureaucracy and doesn’t like that and knows why that impedes growth and impedes development, impedes creativity,” said Mulvaney.

In his article entitled “Trump deregulation boosting our economy – Here’s one example,” Steve Forbes explains this approach in more detail.

Two big things have been propelling the U.S. economy forward in impressive fashion: the 2017 Trump tax cuts and the president’s relentless drive to reduce unnecessary regulations, which are another form of taxation.”

  9. Now just imagine the outrage that would ensue if a white woman said this, but replaced black men for white men…..

It would be epic. But as has been the case for some time now, the racism is reversed, and that’s OK with the left.

“Ilhan Omar: “our country should be more fearful of white men”

2018 Al Jazeera interview downplays threat of Jihadism terrorism: “we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men””

“In 2018, Al Jazeera asked then-Congressional candidate Ilhan Omar about American fears of jihadist terrorism. She told the network that people should fear white men more than jihadist terrorism. Of course, she’s not only racially profiling, she’s adding the concept of race as a comparison to jihadist terrorism, which is not a “race.”

It’s just fascinating that we’re seeing this for the first time now.

Nick Givas reports at FOX News:

In resurfaced interview, Ilhan Omar answers question on ‘jihadist terrorism’ by saying Americans should be ‘more fearful of white men’

In a resurfaced interview from 2018, anti-Trump Democrat Ilhan Omar responded to a question about the “quote-unquote legitimate fears” some people have of “jihadist terrorism,” by saying Americans should be “more fearful of white men.”

In the interview, Al Jazeera host Medhi Hasan said some Americans feel justified in fearing Islam, not out of hate but for their own safety, before listing a number of radical Islamic terror attacks. Omar dismissed this suggestion immediately and laid the blame on white males instead, calling for the profiling and monitoring of caucasian men.

“I would say our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country,” she replied.

“And so if fear was the driving force of policies to keep America safe — Americans safe inside of this country — we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.”

Less cynical, technology has made research., writing etc easier and quicker, hence less time on school work and more time working to pay the loans needed to obtain the commodity ie piece of paper.

  11. Looking at the both the right and left reaction to Mueller, both sides are working to fit it into their narrative.

It’s interesting to note the lack of concern by some members of the right for the proven Russian interference in US elections.

Omar does have a point. Young white males do have a higher level of violence and are overrepresented in mass shootings. Her comments are an indirect criticism of racial profiling.

Higher level of violence than whom? Why are “mass shootings” relevant, given their extreme scarcity? And what’s the source on the mass shooting thing?

Parenthetically, safe third countries aren’t determined by some stuff the President may have said, so that wouldn’t figure into refugee determination of anything.

Young white males dominate the stats on spree killings, mass shootings and serial killing. Killings occurring during other crimes or within family have no racial bias.

I gathered from AJ’s link that the president had changed the asylum process and now treats Mexico as a safe third country. His remarks on Mexican crime can be used to demonstrate bad faith ie he knows Mexico isn’t a safe third country but is asking it be treated as such.

I agree with you, the Russians did plenty to try and influence our elections, but on both sides. But I place the blame on Obama, who’s watch 99% of it went down on. His administration did nothing.

And the bottom line is the Russians efforts did little to nothing to influence anyone. They just aren’t very good at it.

Your link reminded me of the Fusion GPS links I read. Hits the reader with loads of circumstantial evidence, lots of links to similar sites, claims of cover-up etc.

Somalis in refugee camps rarely posses paper work so it’s impossible to disprove the conjecture presented in the beginning of the article. Was there immigration shenanigans? Possibly but there’s no proof either way. And if yes, is it important? You really can’t blame Somali’s for fudging a few things to get out of a refugee camp. And Omar was a child so blame her dad.

As for the marriage to her supposed brother….he’s an UK citizen. There’s no need for him to get married to cone to the US. Come as a tourist, be admitted to university and then receive a student visa. In addition he had a previous history of living in Minnesota. He had no need to marry her for immigration purposes.

Was he a brother? The only evidence comes from social media, (The beginning of the article is pure conjecture) …And calling your sister in law your sister isn’t unheard of. And as she was married to the man, the in laws children would be niece and nephew. Somalis also tend to have a larger definition of family…..everyone in your clan is your cousin

As for her lack of denial, I don’t blame her. I wouldn’t dignify this nonsense with a reply. It would give some right winv blogger legitimacy. As for the social media scrub which the author claims is a cover up….every politician erases their internet history as best as possible for fear some conspiracy minded fool would take things out of context.

I find it interesting that right chases these tales of misdeeds….reminds me of the birther conspiracy. Could it be Obama and Omar dont fit their definition of what is an American. Obama finally showed his birth certificate…..The ultimate act of carding. Omar probably doesn’t have all documentation needed to prove a negative…..it almost impossible to prove a negative. And Somalis documentation isn’t reliableso no-one is going to accept it anyway.

From what I understand the ACLU plans to contest this change of policy in court. I imagine the status of Mexico as a safe country would be an issue in that court case.

Also, if a person is denied their refugee claim, can they not appeal? (Most western countries have an appeal mechanism) And if the claim denial is based on their previous presence in Mexico, would not the safety of living in Mexico be an issue in the appeL

The figures I’ve seen from 60 to 75% of mass shootrs, spree killers, and serial killers are white males. The numbers vary depended on definition and criteria. Some distinguish between a mass school shooting and a shooting that takes place at school ( e.g. a gang hit that takes out three deliberately targeted people)

In (non hispanic) white people’s defence they still are roughly 60% of the population. Although most shooters are under 35 in which whites are closer to 50 % of the population.
