Morning, Chas. We miss winter around here, just always Spring and Fall. And rain, lots of rain. Actually, it did not rain today, so nice. The capital has had flooding and landslides, but nothing like Nebraska.
I got caught up in some Bible study with my online group. We are going through 2 Kings.
Miss Bosley is still hanging out in Wesley’s room a lot because she misses him.
The weather is cold here again. I picked the right day to mow. I need to go pick up the pinecones that the mower left. Thankfully it left the shorter violets that dot the yard for now.
I was given a long list of office supplies to order yesterday. It’s time to replenish. I hope to find some good deals. We use one particular kind of high quality printer paper. That is our biggest expense except for toner.
Morning! What a beautiful bluebird!! How they can bring a smile! 🐦
Sun is shining and the snow is melting. Now they predict snow for Sunday. You just never know what the day is going to bring…you get what you get…and don’t throw a fit! 🙃
Yep, it’s a bluebird. Eastern bluebird, to be precise. (America has three bluebird species.)
I love those little birds, but until I moved to Indiana I had rarely seen them. In Nashville I saw one about twice a year. In Chicago, less frequently than that, and they don’t live in Phoenix. (I have seen mountain bluebirds once or twice.)
Indiana has a lot of these little guys, and I’m glad. They have been hurt by other cavity nesters, including the aggressive, non-native European starling. We had a family nesting near us, probably in our yard, every year up north. I never saw their nest, never looked for it, since they raised about three nests each summer, and having a well hidden nest seemed a secret worth keeping. (I didn’t want to alert starlings or other nuisance birds to where it was by finding it and photographing it. I was content to photograph the fledglings once they brought them to our back lawn, as they did every year. And the fall fledglings stayed in a family group with their parents all winter, so we would see little flocks of five or six bluebirds all winter, and then new young the following summer. We had a reel clothesline we never used, but we kept it because the bluebirds loved hunting from it; other birds did sometimes too (such as phoebe and even a barn swallow once or twice). This bird is on a trail I like hiking.
Spring has made it to southern Indiana, by the way. I went out Saturday hoping to see some green leaves (which I did) or flowers (which I didn’t); I usually judge the appearance of spring by those signs. What I wasn’t looking for, but saw, was the first basking turtles of spring! I saw five on my way past the pond (four on one log), and on the way back I saw two on the log that had had four, but also two snapping turtles out in the pond–at least seven individual turtles. I also saw a muskrat in the creek when I walked past it, and again when I came back.
I’m on my way out the door to see what else I can see. A bit of a late start, but my husband wanted me to wait till the electricians got here so I could let them in (he’s painting the bathroom). They’re here, so I can go take a spring walk!
Good morning. And a good morning it is. Sun is shining, temp is cool. Fortunately below freezing so I could still wear my boots that soak in water when it is warmer but are plenty warm when it is below freezing.
The sparrows have been busy building their nests already. Other birds are singing away and probably just as busy. We used to have bluebirds in out bluebird houses but the swallows took them out. They are still around in other nooks and crannies.
I just finished ordering the supplies. Printer paper, the quality type we use for returns, is not on sale. I try to get good deals on it, but when you have to have it, you get it at what the market demands.
Looks like a sloooooowww day here on the blog! Taking a break from cleaning…fridge has been emptied and scrubbed down. Next up….vacuuming and mopping the wood floors. Bible Study tonight in town….think I’ll start drinking coffee now…. ☕️ hope ya’ll are having a lovely day…it’s the last day of winter ya know!?! ⛄️ 🌺
I’m just back in my office after most of the day away to allow others access, with a new light over my head (though the switch for it isn’t yet hooked up). The electrician and his helper (his son) are doing all of the remaining tasks that they can do today. So three lights have been put up, and switches put in place (but not connected), and they’re trying to finish the bedroom light before they leave if they can. When we separated a third of the living room into my office, I put in a floor lamp and figured it would work well. It works OK, but it turns out to be a bit of a nuisance to walk back there to turn it on (especially if the house is dark), and since we were going to have an electrician come anyway, we added an overhead light. So now I have two lighting options, which is better. The other two lights have had their chains and cords removed, and they will be turned on by flipping switches on the wall. My husband is getting an overhead light in his studio, also, but that one hasn’t been installed yet.
This morning when I went out to see what spring sights I could find, I saw a great blue heron in flight (one of my favorite bird sightings, the great blue in flight) and on my return by the pond, was in time to see the first turtle crawl out onto a log. (I’ve seen them on the log plenty of times, but never watched one crawling onto it.) It got halfway up and then went back in, and I didn’t know if it fell or reconsidered because of me. But it started again and was successful, and then it was joined by one twice its size. Two turtles were swimming farther back, including a snapping turtle. And two passing men (at different times) commented on the turtles–I don’t think I am the only one happy to see spring! It isn’t here in its full glory yet, and we may have cool days and even more snow. But it’s spring, and for now that’s enough.
Finally finished bagging up all of Hubby’s clothes that were in our/my bedroom, including his dresser. (I had not kept to my fill-up-one-kitchen-trash-bag-a-day plan, though.) This morning I opened the door to the closet in our living room, which is somewhat of a walk-in closet, to take some of those clothes out.
That closet is packed with more of his clothes, more than I remembered! I cried. I had thought I was cruising towards being finished soon, but that closet is full. I already have about 12 of those trash bags filled with clothes before even opening that door.
Okay, well, it’ll take a little longer than I thought. And when I am finished with his clothes, I am going to cull my own, too.
Such a nice day to sleep in before conference begins tomorrow, which will go all day from 8:30 to 4:30. Bible study went until almost 10 last night. I spoke too soon about no rain as I woke up to more rain this morning.
oh, I had another praise yesterday. At my last conference, well another showed up and surprised me, but I thought it was my last, the mom mentioned something about work and I asked where she worked. She said at the clinic and I slapped my head and said, “oh, no, I forgot to call the clinic.” She asked who I needed to see. I said the physical therapist for my slipping ribs, which have been bad lately. Then she proceeds to tell me that she made a mistake in the appointments and needed to call and change something, would one o’clock tomorrow work? Oh, my, God is so good.
I ordered What About Bob? Thank you for recommending it. We need some laughs these days. Art had not heard of it either. We had a chance to watch Love and Mercy while Wesley was home. It is about the life of Brian Wilson with the Beach Boys. It was not comical. I had no idea what all he went through. It is an excellent movie. It does have a crazed psychiatrist who does use bad language, but that was realistic for his true life character. I think What About Bob must be the flip side to Love and Mercy regarding psychiatrists.
My cousin and I saw Love
And Mercy in the theater when it came out. The Beach Boys were my first concert and I saw them again after Brian had been out of the mix for a while but was returning to play for the first time at that outdoor stadium concert in ‘76 (but his return was short lived).
I forgot to mention that when I mowed yesterday I saw a beautiful hawk flying to the top of a neighbor’s pine. It was so majestic. I know we have fledglings because I hear their cries, too. We have a lot of birds including what lately sounds like more than on type of owl unless a human is pretending to be one.
When I was at Publix recently, a man in line behind me had lots of bags of organic carrots. The clerk asked if he was in the restaurant business. He told her no, that the carrots are for the horses at the nearby riding stables. Lucky horses. They get the good Greenwise brand!
DJ, what did you think of Love and Mercy? We watched the extra part about the making of the film. It showed Brian and his wife watching the filming to be sure it appeared accurate. I wish you could have seen that background to the film. It adds a lot to see it after the movie.
I sent my 1st through 3rd place selections on the haiku. This was the first class. I am not sure how many I will do. There were 21 to go through. I wrote critiques on the winners so the 4th graders can gain better understanding of the form. When it is all done I will give more details about this interesting project.
The snow has ceased with no accumulation. The big ol fat squirrel and his brother are continuing to be pesky near the bird feeder. The Mourning doves have been landing on the deck to partake of the seed….they are so beautiful. When they are startled by the squirrels or the nasty ol blue jay, they gracefully lift themselves to the branch overhead. Such beauty!
Janice you and Art are going to enjoy What About Bob. We didn’t get to watch it during the snow blizzard due to no utilities….I am going to watch it this weekend…husband will be canyoneering in Utah with some other teachers so I will have some time to myself!! 😊
Cheryl, thank you for the bluebird!! Mountain bluebirds always signal that spring has arrived for me, but I don’t see them much up here. I think a glimpse or two every couple of years. I like the mountain bluebirds especially because they don’t have the red – they are just blue 🙂
It would be funny if it weren’t so sad.
Elvera went in and sat on the bed three times. I went in to ask if she was ready to go to bed.
She said, “I don’t know how we are going to get home.” I told her that we were home. But she didn’t understand that. I then told her to stick with me. “You’ve been doing that for 62 years.” She agreed. Then I put her to bed. There’s more than what I just said. But that’s the essentials.
She just got up and came back in here.
That’s ok for now.
I’ve seen What About Bob twice, and enjoyed it more the second time (the first time I knew little about the plot and so I missed some of what was going on–I’d never heard of it except that someone found it funny).
I have a great cure for ribs that are out – hit a deer!! Worked for me. Just kidding, don’t do that! Hope you all get relief soon – those are painful and uncomfortable all at the same time.
Loved the pet fish in the jar that Bob wore around his neck. And the ending is pretty funny.
I thought Love & Mercy was well made and filled in the gaps and backstory of what was partially known about his struggles through those years.
As with anything, I realize it was made from one point of view; the wife came out looking like an absolute saint and that caused me to wonder about other perspectives of what was going on at the time. Was she possibly taking advantage of the situation? I’m hoping they’re still married and that he’s somewhat stable.
I remember doing just some online research after seeing the movie to figure out how true to reality it was. Don’t remember what I found, if anything, at that time.
The physical therapist said that my ribs had more spring or were the springingest, she had ever felt. I think that that is a backwards compliment. I am learning that when I have a violent allergy sneeze, I need to hold my ribs. And, of course, bend my knees more.
Good morning everyone but Jo
Good evening Jo.
One more day of winter!

Cheryl, I love to watch turtles. I have seen the most while at the beautiful Callaway Gardens which is near where Alabama borders Georgia.
