The number eight. The Beatles had a popular song called “Eight Days a Week”. “Eight is Enough” was a popular TV show years ago. Eight wins in a college football season is pretty good. But here at Pickled Pigskins we can’t seem to get to that number correct. Only three of us have been able to get 8 or more correct out of ten games. And most weeks 6 gets a win, including Idaho Mike last week. Let’s see if we can improve. In order to help us out, I’ve included current overall and conference records for each team.
Have at it. Just get it done by NOON EDT Saturday.
1 Michigan State – This will be the upset of the week.
2 Auburn – This could almost be the SEC Pillow Fight.
3 Army – The Black Knights have a good shot at the Commander-in-Chief Trophy.
4 Houston – Mainly because of how badly Navy is doing this year.
5 Duke
6 Clemson – I don’t think this will be the upset this week.
7 Mizzou – only because it’s Mizzou
8 Arizona – This is not the Wildcats’ year, but then, it’s not the Bruins’ either. Bear Down!
9 Akron
10 Utah 35 – 27
1. Michigan State*
2. Ole Miss
3. Army
4. Houston
5. Duke
6. Clemson
7. Mizzou
8. Arizona
9. Akron
10. Utah 21-17
* I agonized over the first game, one of Michigan’s two big rivalries. Michigan is ranked higher and has a better record this year, but Michigan State has beaten Michigan 8 out of the last 10 years, 4 out of 5 as home team and 4 out of 5 as visiting team, even when Michigan was favored. Michigan State has home field advantage this time, and rain is forecast. Hmmm. As I typed this I talked myself into changing my mind.
2 of those correct so far, Kevin. the Arizona-UCLA game is only in the 2nd quarter with UCLA up by 3 points (10-7).
But that game will not change the outcome. I hereby declare the winner to be the person for whom this game is named. With one game remaining, and all of us predicting the same winner, here are our results:
I have 7.
AJ, Chas, Janice, and Kevin have 6.
mumsee has 4.
Since it doesn’t matter who wins the Arizona game (except to me as a fan, and to Michelle as a graduate of UCLA, even though she didn’t join in), the final result will still have me ahead by 1 game. (And for once I came the closest on the tie breaker, missing it by 7 points. The final score was Utah 41 USC 28)
So, Me, which game is the tie breaker next week? (I guess all of you will just have to wait and see.)
At least the Gamecocks didn’t lose.
And last I herd, the Boilers were ahead. I thought the season was over already when they lost to Northwestern. Northwestern is not supposed to beat anyone but they seem do being doing well this season.

Peter may be right, but I can’t visualize Auburn in a pillow fight.

Chas- I did say almost. Actually, Mizzou and Vandy would be the SEC pillow fight.

Good point Peter. Actually I don’t like Tigers of any stripe, but they do play with the big boys.

Once again we have three unanimous picks this week. Will we get more than one of them right?

Rigged but congratulations anyway. Nobody will be able to call me a sore loser.

Congratulations, Peter. Mumsee tries her best to hide her feelings.

Rigged? Not this contest.
UCLA won the game, so the final results are the same.
