Prayer Requests 8-30-18

It’s Thursday, so don’t forget to pray for Jo, her students, and the people of PNG.

Anyone else?

Psalm 21

The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.
    How great is his joy in the victories you give!

You have granted him his heart’s desire
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.
You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.
Through the victories you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord;
    through the unfailing love of the Most High
    he will not be shaken.

Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
   The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.
11 Though they plot evil against you
    and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.
12 You will make them turn their backs
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.

13 Be exalted in your strength, Lord;
    we will sing and praise your might.

  1. Please pray that all the small details will be taken care of and everything get packed and safely transport.

    I have mentioned the obsession that my Youngest Sibling In-law (YIL) has with conspiracy theories and his toying with Holocaust denial. It has gotten much worse. My father, who was genuinely disturbed by Youngest In-law’s negative statements about the Jews, has quietly resisted. This week, YIL, using my sibling as a proxy, began to try to convert my father to his viewpoint. He gave him a book that, on our examination, has turned out to be a book written by an American Nazi sympathizer and a member of the ‘America First’ organization of the 1930s, whose members also included the known anti-Semite and supporter of Hitler, Charles Lindbergh. The book purports to prove that the infamous forgery The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, which was used by the Russians to justify their pogroms and Hitler to justify his extermination program (because the The Protocols a supposed ‘record’ of the occult and genocidal aims of Jews), is authentic. Just a cursory glance at claims of the book YIL gave my father, shows the ridiculous contortions of illogical argument that the writer goes to try to prove the authenticity of a forgery (yes, the writer is a woman, which is ironic, since YIL is very conservative in his views about the role of women). No sane person would swallow it. The book YIL gave my father should have been lost to time after America First disbanded three days after Pearl Harbour, but it has been republished by some new anti-Semitic organization. My father is greatly grieved and disturbed, and he says he sees a danger, in the anti-Semitic path YIL is taking, of ultimately concluding that the Bible itself and the person of Jesus Christ is also part of a supposed Jewish conspiracy. Please pray that YIL will be stopped in his destructive course, and that his wife and children will be protected. We have observed an increasing tendency of YIL to isolate his family from the rest of us. When the Eldests were here, we invited Youngest and the children to come for a day to play with their cousins, but they only came briefly in the evening, because YIL insisted that he needed to be there to help supervise his children.

  2. Prayers for my neighborhood friend “E,” a Christian & an RN (a few years younger than I am) who is battling stage 4 lung cancer. We texted back and forth, off and on, through the evening, serious and funny by turns, her illness, faith, my house and runaway dog, I let her set the pace and change the subject when she was ready.

    She’s having a lot of issues with pain and a recent scan found some more spots on her spine. She’s hoping to receive some more radiation later this week which usually helps with the pain but she’s been in pain daily since January and it’s taking a toll. She goes back to the doctor on Friday. Because the shocking diagnosis came on her so unexpectedly in February, it also is all still very “weird,” she said. Lots of tears, lots of prayer. Her main support is her church, several of the women are surrounding her.

    Spiritually, she remains strong from what I can see, ever seeking and going deeper, she’s dealing with something I cannot even fathom. A sample from her texts last night (I don’t think she’d mind the anonymous share):

    “Had a spell of not praying about it per se — except Oh God the PAIN! but not lack of faith really — kind of looking watching for a more adequate faith. Can’t really explain I guess. Don’t really know what I mean BUT I DO know. You know? anyway LOTS of discovering might say … I love God and want to love Him more. That’s … I don’t know. The Marvels of HIM. We really have no clue. Barely clued in. … “

  3. A follow-up on previous prayer requests: 1) it became clear to me that attending the state conference wouldn’t work for this year; and, 2) I haven’t heard yet whether the new piano lesson inquirer, who emailed on Monday, will enroll with me or not. I know that my teaching colleague who gave the family my name also provided other names of possible teachers.

    And some new requests: I would appreciate prayers as our family is in transition. The changing job situations with 3rd Arrow (possibly moving up to an assistant store manager position, which would increase her work hours) and now with 4th Arrow starting her job (orientation was this morning) means our family schedule will also be in flux. It seemed very quiet this morning, being home with just the two youngest. Trying to find time for our “family” read-aloud, which I do with 4th, 5th and 6th, and for family Bible, which I do when all four of the arrows living at home are here, will be an interesting juggling act.

    There will be more training of 5th and 6th Arrows, too, to work toward their ability to do more of the tasks 3rd and 4th Arrows have largely assumed.

    All this, of course, takes patience on mom’s part.

    If you could also pray for 4th Arrow’s safety in her work commute, I would be grateful. She’s a pretty-newly-licensed driver and makes novice mistakes, some more dangerous than others. To get to her workplace, she has to drive through something like three or four of the top ten most dangerous intersections in our area — that based on number of accident reports over the last four years or so.

    Gives a mother pause.

    Also (sorry I’m so full of requests today — I have such a busy month coming up with the wedding and everything else, I’m trying to get everything sorted and put out there as far as prayer needs go), please pray for a new initiative at church that 5th Arrow will be involved in. Our congregation has several children with autistic spectrum disorders, developmental delays, and the like who aren’t well-served through traditional Sunday School classes, Bible studies for middle-schoolers and their parents, leading up to 8th-grade confirmation, and other such offerings our church has provided for years. So there will be a new class for special-needs kids and youth two times a month that will provide almost 1-to-1 attention with a learning-disabilities teacher and other experienced teachers working with these children.

    We are hoping this will be a good class to help meet more of 5th Arrow’s needs than his previous class experiences at church have been.

    Thanks a lot for praying for our family.
