  1. Yes. Comey’s comparison of Trump to a Mafia boss is inspired. From a distance, Trump appears to be a hilarious and ridiculous buffoon, but I understand how the whole scene wouldn’t be so funny to those who work with him. It is probably best to view Trump as a combination of Don Corleone and Inspector Clouseau.

That’s the thing about Trump: anything is possible with him. Anything. Donors to the Republican Party are actually funding a website, LyinComey.com, dedicated to discrediting the straight-arrow former FBI director. Comey might be a dour stick-in-the-mud, but to see the Republican Party spend money and moral capital with a tabloidy website trashing a former director of the FBI is grotesque. But hey, it’s Trump’s party now. Golden showers all around!

I had a conversation late this afternoon with a friend who is conservative, churchgoing, and decent to the marrow. An ordinary guy. Pillar of the community sort. In all the years we’ve known each other, we’ve never had a political conversation, to my recollection. But today, as we were talking, he unloaded on Trump. He’s just disgusted with everything — the filth, the lying, the tweeting. “What kind of idiot tweets out taunts to a country with nuclear missiles?!” he said. “It’s crazy! We’re talking about war!” Et cetera.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him about the pee tape. #MAGA

  6. Meanwhile, on to trivial matters.

The Russians are establishing themselves in the Middle East.
There is a threat of war breaking out in a big way.
N.Korea and China are going to try to scam us again. I don’t think they will get away with it this time. If there’s anything Trump is familiar with, it’s scams.

  7. Chas, Trump is used to pulling scams on ignorant men and vulnerable women. He is not used to being the one being scammed. Besides, as Comey and others have detailed, Trump has no interest in what is in the best interest of the United States. He is solely focused on what helps his own image.

  9. From the article:

I can’t say for sure, but I suspect that Paul Ryan’s diagnosis of what ails America is pretty similar to my own. We are not behaving as responsible adults. Our greatest political challenge is out of control debt. Our greatest social challenges are declining families, increasing dependency, and eroding social cohesion. The debt could have been addressed by government. The other trends continue to degrade our culture, our economy, and our personal lives. And the ascension of Trumpian politics – slashing, mendacious, corrupt, and polarizing – aggravates everything that was already going wrong.

Paul Ryan didn’t belong in Trump world. So much for worse for us.

  10. When you have no respected borders (physically or morally) you have no country and cannot expect to have any cohesive culture. Republicans and their globally inclined Democratic counterparts can be thanked for the removal of meaningful physical borders that used to regulate the travel of people and goods between distinct countries. Morally, human nature has always been prone to evil, that’s one reason physical borders on countries and people are necessary.

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2018/04/comey-classified-swipe-at-loretta-lynch-shows-how-untrustworthy-he-is/#more-247019

“I have been highly critical of Loretta Lynch. I didn’t support her nomination to be Attorney General.

I’ve argued that the tarmac meeting with Bill Clinton smelled like a signal to the Clintons not to worry about the DOJ/FBI investigation of Hillary’s server.

Yet now I come to her defense because of James Comey’s attack on her.

Comey says that there is classified information that shows Lynch had a conflict. But of course, he can’t tell us what it is, because it’s classified:

Former FBI Director James Comey has some choice words for former Attorney General Loretta Lynch in his new book, suggesting she was torn by his handling of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized email server and hints that there may yet be more information, which has yet to be released, calling into question her partiality.

The excerpts leaked Thursday from his memoir, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership,” are just the latest salvo in a back-and-forth between the two former federal law enforcement giants.

Comey writes Lynch possessed a “tortured half-out, half-in approach” to the emails inquiry. Comey describes how Lynch met with him privately just before the Nov. 8 election, and she embraced him and indicated that he had done the right thing, according to the Washington Post.…
But Comey teases there may still yet be more to the story.

In his book, Comey says “unverified” information discovered by the U.S. government in 2016 from a classified source “would undoubtedly have been used by political opponents to cast serious doubt on the attorney general’s independence in connection with the Clinton investigation.”

According to ABC News, he refers to this as a “development still unknown to the American public to this day,” but his book does not go into further detail.

This is an outrageous hatched job by Comey, using “unverified” information that he can’t even disclose to attack a political opponent.

We’ve seen this type of tactic used against Trump as well by John Brennan:”

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/doj-inspector-general-report-will-come-down-very-hard-on-james-comey-lanny-davis

“Lanny Davis, a longtime Clinton family ally, revealed he was interviewed by the Justice Department inspector general for its investigation into the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton emails probe.

Moreover, Davis, who served as a special counsel to former President Bill Clinton, predicts Inspector General Michael Horowitz will come down “very hard” on Comey in its final assessment.

During an interview with Bill O’Reilly on the former Fox News host’s website, Davis explained why he thought Comey should have been fired by former President Barack Obama and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

“I was interviewed by the inspector general. I only told one reporter that and it was never written,” he said. “So this is my first to say that I was interviewed after my making a phone call researching my book that I considered James Comey to have acted unethically and that he should have been fired by Barack Obama and Loretta Lynch because he violated Justice Department policies by holding a press conference and expressing his opinion publicly on the evidence.”
    ———————–

“Davis said he gave the IG documents in conjunction with an interview and predicted future trouble for Comey, who is coming out with a book next week.

“Documents that were never seen before, but posted two months after the election that showed that the whole email investigation was botched,” Davis said. “So I think that’s where the inspector general will come down on Comey very hard as well as on [former FBI Deputy Director Andrew] McCabe.””

Who’s up for yet another failure by the Never-Trumpers?

But hey, at least this one has a catchy name. 🙂

    https://hotair.com/archives/2018/04/12/new-gop-pac-fights-keep-mueller-investigation-going/

“The Never Trump chorus is at it again. This time they are garnering attention by way of a new PAC. Republicans for the Rule of Law is the latest anti-Trump attack by Bill Kristol and he’s gathered a few friends to come along on this adventure. They want to save Robert Mueller’s investigation. Here is a description of the nonprofit taken from its website:

Republicans for the Rule of Law is a coalition of Republicans who believe the Special Counsel’s investigation should be completed without political interference. We represent the majority of Republicans who believe Robert Mueller should not be fired.

Republicans for the Rule of Law is a 501c4 nonprofit. Directors: William Kristol, Mona Charen, Linda Chavez, Sarah Longwell, and Andy Zwick.”
    —————————

“The poll also shows results indicating that most Americans just don’t care much about this whole thing. Other than political junkies, do you hear regular people bringing Robert Mueller’s investigation into a conversation? I don’t. Does anyone other than the network media looking for ratings care about Stormy Daniels? Trump voters were well aware that he wasn’t exactly a man of high moral character. It mattered more to bring in someone promising to shake things up, do something differently, get results. That is how we got Trump.

So, Republicans for the Rule of Law probably won’t be any more effective than other anti-Trump efforts. Even David Brooks recently wrote in the New York Times about the utter failure of the Never Trump gang. That piece is worth a read. I can’t remember the last time I agreed with Brooks so much.

As Ed points out, who knows if this is really something President Trump would do? It’s fodder for cable news to fill 24/7 programming but so far, little else. Republicans for the Rule of Law has a 30-second spot up on their website. The video has run on Fox and Friends ( a show Trump regularly watches) and on MSNBC’s Morning Joe ( a show that is much less viewed). I imagine if that mailing list gets large enough, we’ll see more of it. It would be safe to say that Trump has seen it. Like he tweeted earlier if he wanted to fire Mueller he would have.”

  22. SolarP, So you think Obama was a bigger liar (more dishonest) than Bill Clinton, Trump, Hillary, Nixon and LBJ?

This is a problem. In the old days, we recognized that there were dishonest liberals such as the Clintons and LBJ, but there were also relatively honest liberals like Hubert Humphrey, Carter, Mondale and others.

We also realized that while there were honest Republicans (Reagan and the Bushes), there were smart dishonest Republicans (Nixon) and stupid dishonest Republicans (Trump).

  27. SolarP, The problem is when intelligent people like you begin to believe that “Obama definitely lied more than anyone”. That is “crying wolf”.

Eventually (and maybe sooner than we think), the Democrats will elect a Democrat Trump (a Bill Clinton on steroids) who lies about everything (like Trump) and completely ignores and subverts the Rule of Law. If we lump Obama in with the Nixons, the Clintons and the Trumps, we have no credibility.

    Like

  28. Well Ricky, Barack Obama certainly ignored and subverted the rule of law, and told enough lies that it’s not necessary to worry about crying wolf by describing him as a liar. We’ve already arrived at the scenario you fear. In fact, we’ve been there since before Obama. We’ve gotten there with the aid of many Republican politicians. I just strongly disagree with you, as I don’t believe the bulk of our nation’s problems arrived with the election of Donald Trump, nor that his being in office is making us worse off than your garden variety R or D would be.

  29. We agree that our problems did not begin with Trump. When large numbers of “conservatives” become completely fact-adverse and cultish and even intelligent conservatives are not able to distinguish between the relative honesty of Obama and the Clintons, we then do idiotic things like nominate and elect Trump. As we have discussed, Trump is ultimately a symptom of something drastically wrong with us.

So McCabe was fired, and should be prosecuted. It’s a crime to lie to the FBI, even if you work there.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/04/13/doj-ig-releases-explosive-report-that-led-to-firing-ex-fbi-deputy-director-andrew-mccabe.html

“Andrew McCabe, the onetime acting director of the FBI, leaked a self-serving story to the press and later lied about it to his boss and federal investigators, prompting a stunning fall from grace that ended in his firing last month, according to a bombshell report released Friday by the Department of Justice’s internal watchdog.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz, appointed to the post by President Obama, had been reviewing the FBI and DOJ’s actions leading up to the 2016 election.

The report, handed down to Congress Friday and obtained by Fox News, looked at a leak to The Wall Street Journal about the FBI’s probe into the Clinton Foundation. The report says that McCabe misled investigators about leaks and did so in a way that did not fall under a “public interest” exemption.

“[W]e concluded that McCabe’s decision to confirm the existence of the CF Investigation through an anonymously sourced quote, recounting the content of a phone call with a senior Department official in a manner designed to advance his personal interests at the expense of Department leadership, was clearly not within the public interest exception,” the report says.”
    ———————

“”He chose to exercise that authority in October 2016, during one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Bureau, with the knowledge of Director Comey and other senior members of FBI management. His purpose was to protect the institutional reputation of the FBI against false claims, including that a sensitive investigation was being shut down for political reasons. ”

McCabe and Bromwich seemingly sought to diminish the credibility of former FBI Director Comey, blasting his “recollection” as “not at all clear.”

“Mr. McCabe’s recollection of discussions he had with Director Comey about this issue is extremely clear; Director Comey’s recollection is, by his own acknowledgment, not at all clear. And yet two of the lack of candor allegations are based on Director Comey’s admittedly vague and uncertain recollection of those discussions. “”
