Psalm 148
1 Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights above. 2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts. 3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. 4 Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for at his command they were created, 6 and he established them for ever and ever— he issued a decree that will never pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, 8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, 9 you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, 10 wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, 11 kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth, 12 young men and women, old men and children.
13 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens. 14 And he has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his faithful servants, of Israel, the people close to his heart.
I’d like to ask prayers for our church. Since September more than a dozen people have died including three elders. One elder moved away. 27 families lost their homes. Our senior pastor is trying to work with the elders through transition planning as he prepares to retire in the next few years. Second pastor doesn’t want to be a senior pastor and is within ten years of retiring himself.
Other key church members are moving away; we haven’t had a new baby born in our congregation in a year. Senior pastor’s mother died at Christmas. Second pastor was grieving the deaths of his parents 1 and 2 years ago, also at Christmas. I already told you about the financial roller coaster. (Which we passed fine at the last minute).
Fatigue and grief are huge right now. The October events victims are now entering another stage of mourning–and it’s hitting harder.
I’m weary and I’m not in any of the above categories.
I’m teaching this quarter on the Sermon on the Mount–we covered a city on a hill and its light on Tuesday. We want to be that light, but we’ve taken a lot of chips out of candle, shall we say? We want to continue to preach the gospel and share God’s grace, mercy and love. I’m not sure what we need–an outpouring of the Holy Spirit?
Pray for those of us left at the newspaper today as the next round of layoffs, these in the newsroom, are expected to hit. Much stress leading up to this and it will be hard and sad day, whatever the outcome. I’m expecting to be let go as well, so I will have to finish clearing out my desk. I brought two large bags of things home yesterday.
For those who don’t check the previous days’ threads, I posted a request and an update late last night on yesterday’s prayer thread. Here they are, with a fresh update:
9:55 pm: Please pray for a family for whom I’ve requested prayer before.
My brother and sister-in-law’s friend Jody, who died two years ago, left behind a husband and daughter, Randy and Tatyanna.
My SIL sent this email tonight:
Please pray for our friend Randy & his daughter Tatyanna. Randy was overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning tonight at his job. He was taken to [city] Hospital and he needs to be transferred to [another hospital 2 hours away]. It is too windy tonight for medlink to fly so they are currently getting an ambulance to take him to the [distant hospital].
We don’t have any more details right now on Randy’s condition. Tatyanna asked for prayers for him and I’m sure that poor girl could really use everyone’s prayers also.
Tatyanna was in high school when her mom died, and is in college now, about an hour from home and around three hours from the hospital her dad is being transported to.

Good news update:
(via my SIL this morning) —
We heard from Randy’s sister this morning that Randy is out of harms way!
[Major] Medical center [where Randy was transported] has a Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber. That is the best/quickest way to get the carbon monoxide out of the blood and oxygen in.
Not sure how so much of that got bolded above (I thought I was only bolding “Good news update.”
Anyway, hoping this doesn’t turn out so dark, but I’d like to request prayer for my ever-faithful-in-prayer best friend, Karen, who leads the Bible study I mentioned above. Her mom has had what appears to be her 5th stroke. Staff from her assisted living place found Valrie standing and leaning against a wall in her room, unable to speak. She was transported by ambulance to a hospital, and her speech has returned, but her confusion is getting worse. (She has vascular dementia.)
Karen is requesting prayers for wisdom on what the next step should be to take with her mom when she’s ready to be released from the hospital. She feels that assisted living is no longer meeting her mom’s needs.
One of our long-ago photo guys stopped in with his golden retriever, Dakota. Our editor said we need a therapy dog around here and, indeed, we all leaped from our desks to pet and love him. “Can we keep him, can we keep him, please??”
