All is quiet here–except I just took the dog out and she started barking like mad at something…finally got her back inside–but I’m sure the neighbors were less than thrilled….
So much rain here. Lots of flooding in the lowlands. I went to market today and it was obvious that the gardens weren’t doing too well.
We did see the sun this morning. And when I had to get up in the middle of the night, God surprised me with a brilliant sky full of stars. I whispered words of thanks to Him before going back to b ed.
Happy Birthday, Kim!
Good morning all. This is the third morning 2 of my clocks have lied to me. One says it’s midnight and the other claims it’s only 5:30. The sun is silent on the matter. They’ll have to be replaced (the clocks, not the sun).
The most powerful and richest nation this planet has ever seen is living on the most precarious assumptions.
I know. It belongs on the politics thread.
But it’s so.
I am reading Matthew 5 this morning. The beatitudes.
Years ago, Chuck, a young men, just moved to Charleston. He was teaching a SS class in his church. I was visiting, and in his class.
He was teaching the beatitudes. He, probably just to elicit comment, asked me if I really thought Jesus said those things. I said.
“Yes. He said that, but that’s not all he said and not the only time he said it.”
Preachers have preached sermons on each of the “Blessed’s” i.e. A sermon on “Blessed are the poor in spirit”. What does that mean and how does it affect me?
Jesus was an itinerate preacher. The Bible says that on the Sabbath he taught in their synagogues. A lot of things went on during the weeks that we don’t know about. (John 21:25)
Good morning from Atlanta. We are suppose to get some snow and possibly ice in the afternoon. I hope it won’t be bad. If we lose power/heat, I have a supply of energy and heat in Miss Bosley. She is cuddling up on me much like a scarf at my neck. As a kitten she fit right up under my chin. She still tries, but does not fit the same. Think: a turtleneck and cowl neck in one.
I am really enjoying the Modern Day Study Bible (NKJV) I got through Christianbook.com. It is on sale for only $19.99 if anyone wants a real bargain. I think that is around 75% off. It has a lot of history and some pages of bio sketches. The first bio was on John Milton. The one I got is imitation leather in gay and turquoise. I think they also have it in black. The thumb-indexed ones are a good bit more in price.

Happy birthday, Kim, and many, many blessings to you!
We have no pastor at our little church right now. We had a visiting pastor and he spoke on “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
Yes, just reading each of the gospels will let you know that much is left out in each account. There are reasons for that, of course. As John says, if all was put in the world couldn’t hold all the books! (for one reason)
Yes. It is my birthday. I don’t set my alarm on Fridays. It’s my little treat, knowing that Amos won’t let me sleep too late. This morning I heard the coffee pot gurgling as I awoke. There was a small gift waiting for me with that distinctive bow that most of my life has meant there is something I will really like inside. There were a lovely pair of diamond studs inside. As Mr. P said “they aren’t NBA diamond studs, but they are real”. So here I sit, talking to you, in my PJ’s and my diamonds 😉
I am going in to the office for a little while today. The receptionist (and a good friend) sent me a message yesterday wanting to know if I wanted to go to lunch today. I suspect there will be a little more than lunch involved since I had spoken to her on Wednesday and told her I would bring cake and ice cream today to celebrate any January birthdays in the office. We January babies are often overlooked you know.
I have asked to go to a certain restaurant for dinner tonight. (I have been telling Mr. P this is where I want to go since just after Thanksgiving) They have a bone-in filet. As much red meat as I have eaten in my life and as many steaks as I have had, I have never had a bone-in filet and everyone knows that meat cooked on the bone is better.
Morning ya’ll….it is a beautiful day to celebrate our Lord’s sweet creation of our Miss Kim!! ❤ Happy Birthday precious friend!!!
I'm going to slide off to work…it is 1 degree…gonna get up to 22….heat wave!!
Many happy returns on the day, Kim. Twinkle away with that gift–everyone knows diamonds are a girl’s best friend. 🙂
My cold is settling into a flu–I’m aching all over, even my face. It’s now getting me out of everything I was invited to this weekend. I feel rotten. OTOH, we’re expecting 5 inches of rain over the weekend, so it’s a good opportunity to just hunker down.
The whole family in three different houses are sick.
I have errands I need to run–the worst is picking up cat food 25 minutes away. I’ll do that after breakfast when I have some energy!
Feel better soon Michelle. Old Southern Remedy. Honey, lemon juice, and bourbon. If you must you can thin it with a little water or hot tea. Should be taken when it is warm. Go back to bed with lots of blankets.
I have joked that even if it doesn’t make you feel better, you won’t care, and somehow it is the BEST sleep of your life. Sort of on par with when you were first pregnant but over the morning sickness and you could sleep the sleep of the dead. 😉
Michelle, you can get home delivery of cat food from Amazon and Walmart. Also, Walmart has Lily of the Desert Aloe Juice (inner filet type) that I attribute to keeping me well while others here have been sick.
Feeling run down. I’m pretty much over that nasty cold I had over Christmas, but there seems to be a residual effect on my lungs which is making my asthma cranky. Now that I’m back in the city (have been since Tuesday, and already had my first class of the semester) I have to walk even when I feel like resting. Hoping I don’t get any worse.
Happy birthday Kim! My bathroom muse (since we’re talking abut muses today). Light a candle on a piece of subway tile. The earrings sound perfect. 🙂 Good Mr. P.
I’m convinced I’ve caught *something* from sitting in that urgent care waiting room for 2 hours on Monday. I’m really congested (tight, not loose), my head and face also ache. Feels like it’s either a low-grade flu or a bad cold. I’m swigging Dayquil and Nightquil to get through the work days and to sleep at night.
And I was entirely convinced that yesterday was Friday which has me so confused. I even was messing up my story by referring to events from the day before as happening “Thursday” (rather than Wednesday).
I am debating whether to cancel my friend’s visit tomorrow or not, I’ll try to decide before coming home tonight, maybe this will start to fade by then. Either that or it’ll be getting worse.
The cat (and the eastern sun streaming through my open bedroom window at sunrise) woke me up this morning, Annie loves to play-fight with the covers.
Real estate guy is returning today (I just leave the back door open so he can come and go while I’m gone) — getting the plumbing wall fixtures all in, pipes replaced where needed, so we can resume work on the rest of it.
Jumping in here to share this. Tim Challies has had a series on the fifth commandment, & this one is about how to honor parents who are dishonorable or abusive.
Lots of us are sick today. I made a quick trip to the office to pick up my computer so I could work from home today. I’m currently curled up on my couch with a bunch of pillows and a warm blanket. Sinus infection – glad I got to the doctor yesterday and didn’t wait until next week, but my lungs are good (thankfully).
Happy birthday, Kim. I hope your day just gets better and better!
I know it is going to start sounding like I have a liquor store, but if you boil a little vodka in a pan and inhale the steam it will clear out your sinuses and with the alcohol content it will help kill the infection.
I stood at the end of the foggy fishing pier all morning yesterday with two of our photographers who were swapping stories, the rescue boats in the not-too-far distance conducting the recovery. Surreal in many ways.
I am supposed to be resting my back but fifteen year old daughter continues. She absolutely refuses to share a room and I folded today as it was not in the best interest of nine year old as fifteen was reverting to old ways so nine was not safe in her own room. So, we made the end of the dining room into her room. I refuse to send ten year old back to the boys’ wing as that would give her what she wanted at his cost, but we compromised and all should be safe again. Now to go reintroduce myself to the heating pad.
The temp is raising around here, up to ten, Husband is off to Texas. I hope he manages to stay out of snow storms and does not need to chain up again but he is getting good at it. And, as a planner, has all sorts of ideas on how to make it less time consuming for the truckers.
mumsee: He did, but it was (take care of that back)
Cheryl, thank you
I now order my dog and cat food on line (dog food from amazon as it’s a popular brand and the cat food from a more specialized site as it’s prescription — but that saves me a trip to the vet’s to pick it up, along with some money off the price).

If you watch that first video, by the way, it shows an aerial photo shoot he and another photog (also one of ours from the past) over the harbor, gives you a pretty vivid look at what he was doing when the crash occurred — eerie; although the crash was just after dark flying low over a departing cruise ship — it was part of an assignment for the port where he was the the contract photographer.
DJ, what “first video”? I went back to your article and there was a link to “Copter crash 1” on the side, and I watched it but it was only a sheriff helicopter flying. A quick scan of the article didn’t show a video link in it, but I may have missed it. ?? (I read the article earlier.)
cheryl, on the left side of the story where it says “More,” there are maybe 4 short videos
Wow, kare, that’s crazy — I’ve seen that from time to time (regular books for $200 from 3rd party sellers, etc.), don’t know what the deal is on those items, although I suspect they’re hard to get (not normally carried via amazon suppliers).
Price for my dogs’ food is just under what PetCo charges and shipping is free so it works well for me (plus it spares me from carrying that 25-pound bag and heavy cases of the canned variety up a dozen + steps, or even just into the patio/backdoor area from my car.
The last (4th?) video in that column next to the story was shot when I was out there with 2 of our photographers yesterday morning. They both knew him well, very sad to be “covering” it with such personal connections.
I tried out Acana food a couple years ago, great product but it was ultimately too pricey for me. Switched to Merrick which also has good reviews for quality but costs less.
DJ, it’s still pretty expensive but when you have a large dog that weighs less than 50lbs and just won’t eat unless it tastes right you kind of have to spend a bit more. Sigh. Keva’s actually gained a couple of pounds since switching to this food – a good thing for him.
Kare, items that are sold through third-party sellers can vary tremendously in price on amazon. One might be $12.95 including shipping while another is $14.95 plus $7.95 shipping.
Today I tried my own little concoction. We had three boxes of brownie mix, two of which I had already made. But the batter was very thick, hard to get out of the bowl & off the spoon, & didn’t spread too easily, so I wasn’t eager to make that third box.
Wellllll. . .We also had one box of yellow cake mix. Hmmm. . .
Mix the two together & you get Brownie Cake. Came out really good, too. The taste & texture is as you might expect – kinda brownie, kinda cakey. 🙂
We keep cake mix on hand for a quick treat now & then, but for birthdays or other celebration cakes, Nightingale puts her talented baking skills to work, & bakes the most delicious cakes. I may ask her to make a Coconut Cake for my birthday next week.
Peter – You have probably noticed that your son & I have our birthday on a Friday again this year. I love when that happens. (IIRC, your son was born on a Friday like me, just not the same one. 🙂 )
Really nice tribute video the port put together — stunning views that he captured of our waterfront, our historic downtown district, Navy/veterans/community events
Kizzie- Yes indeed. We like Friday the 13th in the L family. 13 is my son’s favorite number. He even says he was born on 13/13/1983 instead of 1/13/1984.
Thanks for that stars link, Cheryl. 4th Arrow enjoys studying the night sky and the like, so that article was right up her alley.
Well-written article on your photojournalist colleague, DJ. And gorgeous photography in that tribute video, along with the music, which I found beautiful and haunting.
I am looking into renting a van while I am home for seven months this year. There is a company that rents to missionaries only at a good rate.
The problem is that the only one they have available would need to be picked up and returned to Saint Louis. Not so good in January.
However, I just realized that I have one little old lady that supports me that I thought I would never be able to meet. She lives in Illinois near the Wisconsin border, not too far for me to drive from Saint Louis.
And…. what other wanderers might I be able to meet???
Good ideas, Jo. We’re actually about two hours from downtown St. Louis. Let me know if you’ll be stopping by. Mrs L and I could meet you along the road (we’re 1/2 mile off of US 61).
IT’S Friday
You know what that means?
It means Kim is a year older, that’s what.
So? Everybody be nice to Kim. Just for today.
Otherwise, my cell phone says we’re going to get snow tonight and tomorrow.
Don’t know how much.

Kizzie- Yes indeed. We like Friday the 13th in the L family. 13 is my son’s favorite number. He even says he was born on 13/13/1983 instead of 1/13/1984.

Happy birthday, Kim.

Drywall amigo wants to come Sunday morning, I think I’m OK leaving him alone to scoot out to church …
It’s not going to be a very restful weekend for me, but at this point I just want to charge ahead, the faster the better.

hmmm…. looking at maps is fun. I figured out that Peter is only an hour or so away from where I pick up the van. And I will have to go see the cave.

Good ideas, Jo. We’re actually about two hours from downtown St. Louis. Let me know if you’ll be stopping by. Mrs L and I could meet you along the road (we’re 1/2 mile off of US 61).
