😦 Going out to dinner for a couple of birthdays in the extended family. We will end up driving almost 2 hours each way for a meal that will last a bit over an hour. The others all live less than an hour from the place they chose. (or probably ONE choose) That gives us almost two hours back in the dark on the day deer hunting started.

🙂 😦 I read on FB where an orange cat was able to outrun several coyotes a few blocks away. Good for the cat, but they’ll be back. Annie seldom strays outside the backyard (and when she does it’s only as far as the driveway and my sheltered front porch), but I do worry about my animals. A coyote could probably get into the backyard without much trouble, despite my high fence (the driveway gate is shorter and neighbors have a short shed next to our shared fence line that a coyote could easily use as a boost up). I’m trying to brace myself for the possibility someday, which just makes me shudder — and I’ll plan to keep Annie locked in more when spring arrives and the coyotes are more active as they hunt in pairs to feed their pups.

🙂 Whew. I tackled the garage. The farther back I went, the more of a time capsule it was, with many things that had come out of storage (from my mom’s house) when I first moved in here 19 years ago!
A lot gets tossed, a few things still decent enough to give away, other (big) things slated for the “junk” hauler someday soon.
I found a few treasures —
(1) a gilded, framed photo of a couple of our ancestors that hung in our house, well, for just about forever. I wish someone had put their names on the back though.
(2) My grandfather’s “shaving” mirror — which is the one thing I was specifically looking for.
(3) The old horse weather vane from home and the old hand pump from my grandfather’s house — it was on the patio at my mom’s house, as I recall (?) and i’d intended to use it somehow here, probably in the backyard or patio somewhere. But it needed some restoration so it landed in the back of the garage until I could “get to it” — someday.
🙂 Annie ducked into the garage at one point while I was working and I wasn’t sure I’d ever see her again. Best place ever for a cat, she was over and under boxes and assorted “stuff” and finally made it up to the rafters. When she finally emerged, she had strings of cobwebs all over her. 🙂
🙂 Garage wasn’t quite as bad as I thought it was — oh, it’s bad enough, but most of the dense piles of boxes were at the front. As you go back, there are several empty boxes and other things that weren’t so scary. The sofa & chair from “home” is in there, that’ll go out with the junk hauler and that will free up a good section of space. There also are some books out there in boxes. But not that insurmountable.
🙂 Ran into the real estate guy at the dog park, we’re aiming to start bathroom demo on Friday, he said he’ll call the workers to see if Friday-Saturday works for them. At last … I’m both looking forward to it and dreading it.
Speaking of scary house stuff. . .The other day I watch a scary movie, where the scary stuff took place in the basement of the house (of course). That night, after dark, I decided to do laundry, which I almost never do at night.
Well, the laundry area is in our basement. It isn’t a “finished basement”, it has a concrete floor & mostly stone walls (with some concrete bricks in one area), bare-bulb lighting (which have to be turned on one at a time as you go along), & a lot of junk in it. Despite thinking I wouldn’t be scared, I found myself feeling nervous whenever I went down there that night. Hubby was already asleep, & Nightingale & Little Guy were two floors above the basement. Even the dog was sleeping.
I felt so silly, but I don’t think I’ll do laundry at night again. 🙂
Oh, basements are scary. My grandmother had one in Iowa and the neighbors to me now actually have one, too (they’re not as common in California as in other regions of the country).
Don’t you hate it when someone starts walking down the dark steps of a basement in a scary movie?? NOOOOoooooo !! Go Back! Go Back!
I worked in the Giggle room and got rid of five boxes. Found two boxes of toys I should have pulled out years ago for the Adorables. Now Hill has got room. I’m inspired to do more– maybe next weekend?
Of course, my car does not go in my garage as husband has some wood projects set up in there on my van side and son has some car repair things set up in the car side. So my van is out in the rain as it usually is.
What!? That’s what it’s for? Annie thinks it’s a good gymnasium for her.
One visit from the junk hauler company could actually make it car-inhabitable. Someone built some nice cabinets in there and it has electrical hookups & an overhead light.
But I still think I’ll just keep parking the car at the top of the driveway for convenience anyway — getting it out of the garage every morning would get old, especially since my garage door is an old manual one. Although if I ever got a new/used car I’d probably use the garage, at least for a while.
Garage door is pretty rickety with some of the wood at the bottom rotted out. So I’ll probably need to replace that at some point, but I’ll still go for a manual.
We don’t have a garage, but we do have a shed (known as a mini-barn because that’s the style of it) in the backyard, a basement, & an attic. The attic used to be a third floor, a long time ago when the two sections of the house were side-by-side instead of upstairs-downstairs, & is pretty cool. (Unfortunately, it is in no shape to now be used as living space.) Oh, & we have two driveways, one on either side of the house, since it is a two-family home.

Most of the basements in our port town — populated by many Europeans (Italians, etc.) during the heyday of fishing — were used to make homemade wine.
