  8. I was away yesterday when we were planning Michelle’s itinerary, but if she can make her way to southern York County, Pa. on a Sunday, I can take her to a wonderful LCMS church.

  9. Happy Birthday Chas.
    It seems that we have decided Michelle will do a weekend only book tour. 🙂
    I went to the dentist yesterday and had my teeth cleaned. For the first time it was uncomfortable. She didn’t hurt me, but more of my teeth have become sensitive and when she would work on a sensitive spot I thought I would levitate out of the chair. Everything else was fine. That is what having your teeth cleaned every six months of your life will do for you. I have to bring the state averages up you know. I do live in Alabama which is made fun of more than any other state except Mississippi, which is why our un-official state motto is “Thank God for Mississippi”.

  10. G’day or G’evening! Trying to move ahead on being ready for conference. Still more tweaking, never ever ending. My fever did not return. 🙂 I found out my friend, Karen, had a similar fever one evening which was gone the next day. It must be a local virus.

  14. I can always remember Chas’s birthday because it also happens to be Mrs B’s and my wedding anniversary. 25 years today. How it has flown by!

    I’m grateful for the beautiful godly patient wife God has given me.

  17. 😦 The people who had the house before us didn’t take care of it.
    There is a shed in the back that has/had a leak in the roof. It ruined the plywood floor. I thought I would tear it down and replace it with a metal shed like the one I had in Annandale.
    However, the Annandale shed had a concrete floor. This is ruined plywood.
    I repaired the roof. I placed another piece of plywood over the bad section of the floor.
    I will repaint the shed.
    That may work.
    Just before they left, they had the English Ivy that was growing up the side of the house taken down. Now there is just remains of what the ivy leaves when you tear it down.

    And I had to pay a plumber $350 to fix a leaky toilet and faucet. I may be reimbursed for part of that.

    I’m not telling you this to complain, but to say this.

    I used to work with a guy who was familiar with cars and their repair. He said that most people have trouble with their cars because they neglect first echelon maintenance.

    When it begins to look like something is going bad. Fix it now.

    So far, it has been a normal Wednesday.
    I hope it stays that way.
    Chuck and the Herd are taking me for dinner tonight. I haven’t had a birthday party since my 25th. My friends gave me a car battery. I told you about that.

  20. Happy Birthday Chas, enjoy your dinner. I think my last birthday part was when I was 10. 🙂 Oh wait, no, it must have been when I was in my 20s, my roommate’s dad and I shared a birthday so I went over to their house to celebrate from time to time during those years.

    The plumber comes sometime in the next couple hours (he’ll text me when he’d 30 minutes away). Hoping the drain leak under the house is a quick and easy (and relatively inexpensive) fix. I’ll have to start work from home.

    It’s been a slow week. Today I only have a followup on a medical (cough-cough-cough) marijuana dispensary being shut down (we have them all over now) and maybe (but not likely) the Navy’s announcement of which active-duty ships will be visiting for tours during LA Fleet Week on Labor Day weekend.

    The Navy withholds the name of the ships for security reasons, but they are expected to release them sometime this week.

    Photo above is downtown LA where a lot of building is going on right now (you can see the crane rising above one of those buildings). Just the south of there, when I took this photo last Saturday, I saw the blimp and helicopters flying overhead to welcome the Rams’ first day (back) at the LA Coliseum. 🙂

    We finally have an NFL home team again. It’s been a very long time.

  22. Speaking of LA, terrible, terrible flooding. The friend we visited 3 months ago in Baton Rouge said her neighbor rescued 500 people in his small boat! Amazing. No flooding for them, a mile north of LSU.

  23. Happy anniversary, Kevin and Mrs. B1

    My youngest brother has a birthday today. He’s three years behind me, so he’s 46. For years and years, I thought of anyone born after 1970 as really young, younger even than my baby brother, but we “little ones” (the three youngest in the family) are all heading full-tilt toward 50–me next year, my sister the following year, and then two years later and my brother reaches it. (Two of the older ones are already in their sixties.) Not that 50 is old, it isn’t. But it isn’t young.

  25. I know what you mean, Cheryl. I still think of anyone born after 1970 as very young, and I’m shocked every time I’m confronted by how old they are.

    Donna, I was trying to figure out exactly where your picture is from, but I don’t know the skyline that well. Which freeway is it taken from, and facing which direction?

    Glad you have the Rams back. I pretty much lost all interest in pro football when they left LA. I was never able to get excited about the Raiders when they were in LA. Having the Lions now as my home town team doesn’t help at all.

Kevin, my older brothers are all Baby Boomers, and we younger ones are all “Generation X.” Between oldest and youngest is a bit over 17 years, and all of them left the house before their 18th birthdays (joining the army, going to college young, moving in with an older brother), so I only remember the youngest of them living at home. The rest were all like young uncles who came home for holidays and dropped in for visits here and there, not brothers we grew up playing ball with.

    My sister was 27 when she married, her husband a year older. One of my brothers, who would have been about 40 at the time, admitted later that when he met our brother-in-law, his first thought was “What is this man doing marrying my little sister?” And then it occurred to him that his little sister was now a woman! I noticed a bit of a difference in how the older ones saw all of us after that, as though all of them went through roughly the same thought process.

    I gotta tell you, the start in the game the other day was amusing. I was cracking up.

    Picture the scene, tens of thousands of screaming fans cheering for the return of the Rams to LA, the blimp flies overhead, the announcers are frothing at the bit to get things started, players are lined up for the kick , and then the comedy starts.

    As the announcer all but screams “And here’s the opening kick, it’s in the end zone, football is finally back in LA!” to thunderous applause……….

    Then the ball gets run back for a touchdown on the opening play, and the Rams are down 6-0 with 13 seconds off the clock……:)

    THAT, was funny. 🙂

    You guys got football back, but you got the worst team in the league. 🙂

  35. Phoenix doesn’t have a real skyline (no skyscrapers), though it is the sixth largest city in the US. It does have palm trees. I’m guessing that some cities in Florida have both palm trees and skylines, though maybe not. It might be like Phoenix in that hot climates don’t invite sending buildings up ever closer to the sun.

    Meanwhile, also on opening day were a few arrests, 1 hospitalization and several others kicked out from the stands:

    “The Los Angeles Rams preseason opener got off to a rousing start, but the game wasn’t exactly trouble-free. Several fights broke out at Saturday’s game, three people were arrested and seven were ejected from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday evening.”

  42. You will all be glad to know that my contact prescription hasn’t changed. IF I were going to wear glasses full time I might have to get bi-focals but since I only need them to get around in the evenings after I take me contacts our I don’t have to get them. I will be getting new glasses tomorrow because the ones I have were purchased in June or July of 2004!!!! BG is getting her eyes examined tomorrow and I think I will let the fashionista pick out my glasses, because I have NEVER had a pair I was willing to leave the house in.

  43. I just had one of those weird experiences where if I had opened my mouth someone else would have spoken. I Mr. P what he was going to do today. He said he might…. and I thought “mites grow on chicken butts”. Thankfully I censored before it came out of my mouth but I thought it. Now where did THAT come from?

  44. I need new glasses (can’t wear contacts anymore due to dry eyes, grumble, grumble). I have the prescription, just need to find frames, but so far I’ve had no time.

    Plumber came and went. Not good news, looks like the old tub needs replacing, so we’re trying to set up a 2-day job for Monday-Tuesday of next week.

    We have enough going on and will now be adding looking for another car. 😦 They totaled ours. We have not settled, but will probably need to do so. Still thinking things over and will be looking for a car.

  50. DJ, I am taking an online Risk Management: Avoiding Violations. My state is different from your state, but it hit me for you to create a file of everything you are having down to the property, cost, completion, or how it was resolved. When/If you decide to sell this will be helpful information to have on a home as old as yours. Ask your dog park real estate friend what the laws of disclosure are in your state.

    Cheryl- I would say any building over 20 stories is a sky scraper, and Phoenix has some of those, doesn’t it? I mean Tucson had a 22 bank tower in the 60s, so Phoenix has to have one. Yeah, the rivalry. If Tucson got something, Phoenix had to follow and vice-versa. And this photo looks like a skyscraper skyline to me: http://www.wildnatureimages.com/images%203/070224-002..jpg. But then, the tallest building here is only 5 floors.

    Donna- My team is the KC Chiefs. You can have the Lambs, er, a, Rams. If they crash and burn you can blame them.And they were not only distracted by the palm trees, but by seeing the sky in the home stadium and dealing with a crowd of more than a few thousand people. The Edward Jones dome that they left behind is not a good football venue, though it was built to attract the Rams back way when.

    Meanwhile, my nephew’s date to the high school prom is on her way to the semi-finals for some track event (M displays her Olympic ignorance). Let’s cheer for Kate Grace!

  56. Peter, yes, Phoenix has a few tall ones (though that photo you linked doesn’t look familiar), but not many. When I went to Chicago I was super impressed, and next time I returned to Phoenix I could see why–just a small handful of buildings over 10 stories. I recently googled “Phoenix skyline” or something like that, and saw about what I remembered–virtually nothing.

    But I bet you won’t find one in twenty people living outside Arizona who know that Phoenix is a top-ten city, and it was number #9 in population when I left way back in 1989 and it moved rather quickly from there to #6, which is where it stays today.

  60. Cheryl- In the 70s Tucson was the fastest growing city in the US at around 2000 people per month. Las Vegas took over that claim later on. And now there is little water for them in Lake Meade.

  61. What happens when two people who have both been cooking for a long time decide to have roasted chicken for dinner?
    Well one has one plan and the other has another plan. If one gives the other her grandmother’s roasting pan and put the other in charge of getting it in the over at 3:15 she doesn’t expect to go into the kitchen and find it slow cooking in the over at 225° when she walks in the kitchen at 5. It is now up to 350° with potatoes, onions, and rosemary in the roaster. Guess which one of us didn’t have lunch today? 😉

So, I had to take the doorknob off of ten year old’s door as it had a lock on it which I needed on the guest room as fourteen year old daughter was going in there and taking things which did not belong to her. Anyway, I handed him the guest room doorknob and all of the parts and screws and such, told him to find his screwdriver and put it in his door. He came out a couple of minutes later and proceeded to play Lincoln logs with his sister. I asked, Did you get that doorknob on? Yes, he said. I checked. He did. Excellent job, little manlette! Remember four year old in glasses? He has come a long way.

  66. I had a birthday party. We had pizza. And a birthday cake. It had two candles on it. Fire regulations, I suppose.
    Like I said, first party since i was 26. That was sixty years ago.
    There were 15 at my party. Sixteen if you count the one JK is carrying.

  68. Kim’s post made me wonder if I need city permits for the new tub. Ugh. What a pain.

    Meanwhile, I’m not under the gun to find a free-standing (small, 24″) vanity I like. Lots online that I’d love, but no time to order and ship, I will have to find *something* at Home Depot or Lowe’s that will suffice by Monday.

    Newly overwhelmed.

    New photo: That’s Hollywood Presbyterian Church (where Louie Zamperini went, btw, and any number of Hollywood types now and in the past — they also offered some good Christian youth events in the 1970s).

    My friend Carol lives about 2 blocks up from (behind, north of) the church, and right at the base of the hills where the Hollywood sign looms overhead.

    This was taken last weekend, not particularly clear weather. But I’m always struck by the sight of the church steeple and the Hollywood sign right behind it.
