I have some friends who are really struggling. Several years ago he suffered a traumatic brain injury. The medication he has to take makes him sleepy all the time. He was quite successful in his career but they have used all of their savings. The doctors have suggested he file for disability but the problem with that is he hasn’t made any money in the last 3 years and that makes him ineligible for disability. It is a mess. She is one of the strongest women I know but she broke down with me last night. She is in that phase of anything I suggested she found a reason it wouldn’t work and she is not in a place where she will accept help. She is trying to do it all on her own.
Kim, why does it make him ineligible for disability that he has been unable to work because of his disability? Or was he not working before that? That sounds like something to double-check.
She says it is based on your last 3 years of income and since he hasn’t worked in 3 years there is no income. I think it is the same thing Mumsee and Hubby faced a while back.
Wouldn’t it be the income before he became disabled? Don’t they ask for a date of the disability? I have never filed for disability, but that would seem to be what would make sense.
They prefer to not make sense, Cheryl. If you spend your savings first so as not to burden the gov’t, then you should be penalized. Whereas the sensible thing would be that you tried to make it and need some help, to which most of us would respond with some level of help.
Hubby said today he doesn’t have time to call the cardiologist to tell her about 4th Arrow’s positive Lyme test results, and wants me to do it. Wisdom that I’ll choose my words well.
If disability is based on a person having worked & then become disabled, how to young people who have never worked, but have a disability, get approved?
That is one of life’s many mysteries Karen.
At my lowest, I qualified for nothing. No help at all because I had been 100% commission and wasn’t far enough behind on my bills.
Another prayer request for my friend Jenn. Some excerpts (with some editing for clarity) from her Facebook post asking for prayers. . .
“My dear family and friends, I need as much prayer as you can give. .. My life in the past 6 weeks has gone from tough times to toughest 6 weeks in my 8 year journey …inflammatory anemia is getting worse and worse. . .dramatic weight loss [she was already super thin from not being able to eat solid food] and heart too weak to walk, and pumping too hard …pelvis may have a mass in it again.,,thyroid masses might have gotten bigger. .. tailbone needs to be cut out and removed but I can’t – I won’t survive any surgical intervention at this point.
But I am so so excited to tell you [Daughter] is 3cm and will have the twins 21st or sooner. whooot whoot … I will not give up, I have so much to live for … but I am so very tired from the anemia.”
This doesn’t even mention the problems & infections she gets with her bladder tube. Praying for healing, relief from pain, & that she will have many years with these twin grandsons she is so eagerly awaiting.
