  1. I am reading a book for review, Healthy and Free, which has a section on detox diets and the author uses the Daniel fast for herself. Of course I was thinking of Michelle as I read it.

  2. Good Morning. I read a book most of the night. I was awake from 12 to 3 so I finished the book I was reading. I have read Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware Novels for years. He has published onne about ever 18 months or so since the mid 80’s. There are about 30 in all and I have not read the newer ones, so I decided to go back on my Kindle and start from the beginning. It is interesting to see what was current then. One book deals with a school shooting. I don’t remember a school shooting until Columbine in 1999, Now we seem to have 1 a month. Homosexuality was still a big taboo and people would kill to keep their secret.

Which all leads me to my next question. Have any of you had trouble keeping your Kindle on the network. This is my new Kindle Paperwhite and it was difficult to get it on the network at home and yesterday sometime it dropped off and I can’t get it to accept the password and get back on. Guess I will go troubleshoot that now, but if you have any suggestions please let me have them.

  3. Amazing. I like football, as you all know. But it seems the nation is going bonkers over the Super Bowl. Yeah, it’s a championship game, but does it need all the hype? Years ago I started referring to it as the “Stupor Bowl” because the NFL started having a two week gap between the conference championships and the actual game. In those days (the early 90s) the game itself was boring, as the NFC teams were crushing the AFC teams by huge margins. This year I see several hour-long specials on the schedule leading up to the game on Sunday, Feb 7. A lot of them are specials about advertisements! Yeah, you read that right. A TV show in which the whole idea is to show “the best Super Bowl ads” of the last 50 years.

And to top it all off, the pregame show is 4 hours long! It includes an interview with President and Mrs. Obama. What would they have to say about the Super Bowl that would interest the average fan?

So if that’s your idea of spending a Sunday afternoon, go for it. I think I’ll just wait until the game itself and ignore the hype.

  4. Kim. I have a new Kindle Paperwhite. I like the other one better.
You don’t have buttons, you have to punch or swipe it every time.
sometimes I forget whether to punch of swipe.
When I have a problem I take it to the HCP Library. They have a guru there who is very helpful. I couldn’t get my options selections to come up, now matter how much I punched ans swiped. I took it to her and she showed me that I needed to punch at the tip where the options come up. silly me!.

I don’t have a password for mine. That I know of. I just made a quick count of those I printed out. I have 18 passwords. Most trivial. I only use complicated passwords for the bank, e-mail and laptop.

  5. I have a new Kindle paper white, too, bought a little over a year ago — love it, it’s portable and slips into backpacks or work bags easily.

But I still find I like reading (at night) on my iPad (via Kindle app) — and during the daytime, for quick reading, I still lean more toward just accessing my books on my iPhone, also through the Kindle app.

So many devices we have now. I still remember lugging books around if i thought I’d have some time to actually read during the course of a work day or whatever.

But to answer Kim’s question, no, haven’t had problems with the Kindle.

What a cute bird!!!! I love the Saturday hair.

  6. Cheryl, from yesterday,

I have never paid much attention to the debates or the leading up to the primaries zoo in the past. But this year, I was touched with the need to pray for all of them but specifically for Ben Carson. It is hard to be a candidate and be on such public display. It is hard on the families as well. So, this year, I have mostly ignored the antics, but have been trying to pray for them, specifically, Ben Carson. That God would keep them. And that He would place the leader of His Will in place.

  7. I don’t have wireless at home so that is not an issue most of the time with my Paperwhite. It seems to receive wireless at the office, on vacation, and at other hotspots. I really love the Paperwhite, but still often carry books with me because I get review copies. Sometimes I have bought the books to review either for Kindle or from Audible for ease in going through them. Since I have a membership to Audible I often have extra credits to use.

  9. Today’s another day with Carol for me — First I need to go pick up her mail from her residence in Hollywood then head over to Silver Lake (not far, wedged in between Hollywood & downtown L.A., all pretty close together) to spend some time with her at the nursing home. The earlier I get started, the sooner I’ll be home. There’s so much I’d like to do around here today, but it’ll have to wait.

But the good news is she’s scheduled to leave the nursing home on Monday (yay), although there still are issues with leg swelling brought on by their having to reduce by half her Lasix dose (to keep her potassium from taking another dive).

It gets so complicated when several things get going at once and require a lot of med juggling. Seems like they fix one issue only to cause another one.

  10. Eight year old made herself pancakes today. Fourteen year old wanted waffles and a milkshake. Nine year old wanted waffles. Being a firm believer that people learn more from experience, I am letting them. Though, in the past, I have told them it takes a long time, daughter is just getting the waffles for her cooked and it is three hours past breakfast. Then nine year old will start. Lesson learned? I doubt it.

  11. Well, knock me over with a feather…. Fourteen year old asked nine year old if he wanted half of hers and he accepted. Mission accomplished. They both had three large waffles and she had a milkshake. Both are happy. A teamwork experience.

  12. The milkshake was actually milk, banana, yogurt and frozen berries in the Ninja. Why do I have a Ninja, ask you? I asked myself the same thing as I have a very nice Vitamix. But a couple of Christmas’s ago, one of my wealthy seventeen year olds decided I needed one. So, I set aside the Vitamix for a few years, it is about twelve years old, and am using the Ninja. I am happy, they are happy.

  14. 1 o’clock and I’m finally at my desk. I’ve got some sort of circadian rhythm that won’t let me get here until now.

I’m not currently on the Daniel detox, Janice, but I seriously considered it. This is just eating “clean” for 16 days. I examined the Daniel and decided it was way too draconian for me.

Meanwhile, I feel great eating this way, particularly now that I slept two nights in a row! It ends on Wednesday but with Lent only a week after that, I’m thinking about keeping up a modified format. I’ve lost five pounds and only need to lose five more to be where the doctor wants me. I haven’t weighed that little since I got married 38 years ago!

That wasn’t the point of this eating program, but that’s been the most obvious result so far. I’ve lost about 15 pounds in the last 18 months. Nearly done.

Lunch was eggs scrambled with diced onions, green and red peppers, fresh spinach and melted organic Monterey Jack cheese. I blended the left over fruit from last night’s dinner with ice cubes and that was dessert!

    Now to work.

  15. Maybe God will bless Carol with a cute EMT on Monday named Carolyn . . .

I bought my husband a Kindle FIRE the other day when they were on sale. We’ve got a Kindle 2 and he reads almost exclusively on it–is downstairs reading The Count of Monte Cristo while I type.

I watched him push the buttons and remembered why I find it irritating to read on–and the screen is small with all those keys below. So, I thought swiping might be of interest to him.

If comes on Tuesday, it’s a surprise, he might not like it. But I’ll let you know.

Another friend on FB is having trouble, too, Kim with her new one. Kindle 6 she said. I’ll go tag you and you can commiserate.

  16. I never was able to connect my Kindle to the Internet. Well, I never tried. But my husband and son did and were unable to get it to work. They said it was something about where I live. But three of my children were able to connect from home without our knowledge on theirs. That was taken care of. Anyway, mine has always had to go through a computer so it really does not get much use at all. Husband got a new one for Christmas and his connects just fine.

  17. I have had the Kindle 2, a Kindle 7 and the new Fire. I like the Fire for checking online when there is WiFi, as the Kindle 7 wouldn’t connect very well. The 2 used 3G, which was not usually very reliable where we live. Also, as Mumsee mentions, the 2 was hard to get around with the buttons, but at least had the keyboard for searching dictionaries and such. I liked reading on the 7, but in the winter when in my carpool, it was often too dark to read it in the morning since we drive before sun up. The Fire doesn’t have that problem, but the screen is not glare proof like the regular Kindles. Another problem is small links on the 7 and Fire, such that I am always pressing the wrong place with my not-so-small fingers. I bought a pen that has a stylus at the other end, and that has helped.

Oh, well. D2 is enjoying my old 7 and the 2 is here waiting to be taken to the electronics recycler, since its screen is bad.

  18. Mumsee- good idea praying for the candidates. Remember their families as well since the media has no scruples about digging up dirt on them.

As for Carson, I appreciate the fact that he posts a prayer on Twitter before every debate, and often in the morning. He’s a 7th Day Adventist, but has the heart of an Evangelical.

  19. I have a question for the ladies. I have too many jeans and need to get rid of some. I have them in various colors and sizes and textures. I needed to weed them out as I got new pairs but never did. Any advice would be helpful as to what colors are keepers along with leg styles, too, since some are wide leg and others slimmer style. I don’t keep up with styles so I don’t have a clue. I needed the new gray cord pair I got at the Nearly New shop to go with things my brother gave me for Christmas. Help! (think of Beatles singing 🙂 )

  20. Janice, as for me, I would keep the ones that fit the best and that I like the most. Then again, I’m not the style guru as I spend a lot of days with a long cloth wrapped around my waist and an oversized tee shirt. 😉

  21. Mumsee, what qualifies as comfortable? Old softie jeans can be quite comfortable to me. I guess that is one reason they are difficult to get rid of. I think knit slacks with an elastic waist can be comfortable, too, but having a cat, well, you know how cat hair clings to knit materials and that is not a problem with denim. Oh, the new set of problems that entered our lives two years ago!♡

  23. Janice – I don’t know your body type, but for those of us who are not exactly svelte, a boot-cut jean (fitting to the leg, but then flaring a bit at the bottom, but not exactly a bell-bottom flare) is supposed to be flattering.

I have to admit that my jeans are the kind with an elastic waist. But of course, I don’t tuck in my tops, so it doesn’t show. And they are comfy. 🙂

  24. I don’t find jeans comfortable, either. When I was a child, I never had any and never wanted any–but one day in eighth grade I looked around my class (about 30 kids) and realized I was the only one not wearing blue jeans! That’s when I realized how “out” I really was. (That and the night I graduated eighth grade. I proudly made my own skirt–pale blue with tiny flowers–and paired it with a lacy white blouse. But alas, I was the only girl, of about 45 girls graduating with me, not wearing a pastel dress.)

In college, one of my professors told me I couldn’t refuse to wear makeup, refuse to wear blue jeans, and refuse to get my ears pierced and then wonder why no one accepted me. I was too “distinct” from them. So I learned to wear makeup (sometimes), got some blue jeans . . . but held firm on the earrings since I simply had no interest in them and didn’t want to spend that kind of money to put something in my ears that wouldn’t show with my long hair anyway. (But when my husband and I were courting, I offered to get my ears pierced and he bought me two pairs of earrings that same day, before they were even pierced.)

Several years later, I realized that I virtually never wore my blue jeans. They just weren’t comfortable and they weren’t “me.” But I no longer had my “walls” up in a way that precluded me making friends, and I was in a place where I could say, “I don’t really like blue jeans” but have my own style, and that would be OK. So I gave away the blue jeans (keeping some colored ones–black, pale green, and burgundy–but I rarely wore them, either, since I liked how they looked but not how they felt, and eventually I gained enough weight they didn’t fit any more).

  25. Long day.

I was got Carol’s mail picked up and delivered to her. We sat on the patio at the nursing home for a while but she couldn’t get up out of her chair so we had get staff to help. Her leg swelling is still a problem, she promised me she’d ask the doctor about how they can better control that before she leaves.

Saw another Bernie lawn sign, this one in Hollywood. Not far from the Scientology celebrity headquarters, the “modern” Buddhist Temple and the Thai Massage place.

Sure glad I invested in the toll lane program, that’s been a godsend. Lots of traffic again today.

Meanwhile, I wound up having to file a story on the rally held today outside the harbor LAPD headquarters (demanding more police). We already had a photographer there but at some point today I figured we needed some kind of story to go with it, I just couldn’t really go out there and really cover it.

Managed to pull enough together via posted video and news releases.

As I was heading north on the 110 out of town to get to Carol’s, I noticed the CBS news van heading south — they and a couple other stations covered the rally so it was good we had something more than photos in for tomorrow.

Managed to get to the dog park tonight, very briefly. And, yes, it was cold.

Fire in the fireplace — we’re anticipating lots of rain and thunder overnight. Which means I’ll be wearing a border collie on my face.

  26. I wear jeans all the time. I grew up in LA during hippie times. 🙂

I keep two pair of blue jeans– a “good” pair to wear in public and these super soft washed out pair on “at home” days like today or for really grungy dirty work like fire Ashe sifting. When the old ones die, I demote the “good” ones and get a new pair.

I have a pair of black ones for a dressier look.

I bought them all at Costco– that’s how I stay abreast of all fashion.

  27. I got a great pau od “stretchy” bell bottom/boot cut jeans the other day. My husband and daughter told me they llok ed good and the ladies at the office said they made my legs look skinny.
Janice I think a boot cut is more flattering and easier to wear. Dark wash is back in style. Hope that helps.

  29. I love my jeans – have all styles, skinny, boot cut, wider flared. But all of them are stretch jeans – so much more comfortable and look the same as straight up denim. Oh, and boots, boots for every type of jeans and sometimes more boots for the same type of jeans 🙂

  30. Thank you all for your replies about jeans. During the last two Lent seasons I purged my wardrobe but realized I had not gotten rid of any of my jeans. Many I have go way back to home school days. I had various colors since I did not want to always be in the typical blue jeans. I found a style that fit back then and bought them in about four colors. Now I prefer the elastic waist because my waist can be so flexible
🙂 So, that will be a main objective, to get rid of the hug waistband that don’t show anyways under the clothes I wear. Thanks for making me aware and feel okay about getting rid of those. The jeans have always seemed so practical that I could not justify getting rid of them. I am at a new age and stage so I need to let go of some more things.

One really neat project I remember was that a class put together an igloo from plastic gallon milk containers. I think they cut the tops off and glued them together. They did look like ice blocks. Cool, for real!

  36. What I don’t like is how certain colors come in and out of style. For example, not wearing blue jeans, I’ve always made navy-blue slacks a wardrobe basic instead–I’d have a dress pair and a casual pair. But for many years now, navy blue slacks could not be bought in any store. (I suspect they’re available again, though I haven’t checked.) Huh? Navy blue is “out”? That truly makes no sense! I get it that khaki is “in,” but khaki is as boring as blue jeans, and I’d rather have a color choice. I tend to go with a basic color for pants or skirts (blue, tan, black) and then have color in my blouses or tops, rather than wearing plaid or patterned skirts. (Though that varies a little; I do have some patterned skirts that I wear with solid-color blouses.) But navy is a simple background color, and the first store I searched in vain, I just figured they were out of navy slacks. Several years and several stores later, I finally figured out the obvious–the fashion industry made the choice that navy slacks were “out.” Like deciding a few years ago that skirts and dresses were out–who makes such stupid decisions?

It’s very windy today, Carol’s place has a power outage. So far my power is still on. Catching up on laundry and I reconfigured my baker’s rack to put some of my most used pots and pans on — tired of digging around in my low, deep cabinets. With I had those roll-out ones.

But the baker’s rack will work perfect — seems like it was filled with more decorative kinds of things, entirely not useful.

It’s a wrought iron piece my mom and I bought in Tijuana years and years ago, when i just started college. Used it as a book case for many years until I got a place of my own. Then that — along with the yellow-painted secretary desk & hutch we also bought (and painted) — finally were put to work properly in the kitchen, where my mom and I agreed way-back-when that it was where they really would belong some day.

  42. Hey, if anyone is interested in making photo books, my favorite company (Picaboo) has a great deal: $140 of photo books for $45. (That doesn’t include shipping.) Now, photo books are overpriced, but for that deal, for $45 plus postage (about $10), you can get any of the following deals: 96 pages of an 11 x 9 book, or 76 pages if you want lay-flat pages. Or two books of about 40 pages each. Or you can buy four 8 x 6 books of around 26 pages each. (That’s what I’m going to do: I’m going to create a set of four 8 x 6 books, one for each season. If several are ordered at the same time, postage is cheaper.)

    Here’s a link: http://www.picaboo.com/special-offers/

    And their prices: http://www.picaboo.com/pricing/

The reason they’re my favorite is that you have a lot more options of what to do than most photo book companies have. You can have a background of any color (you can click on any spot on any of your photos and make that color your background), and you can “mat” your photos with any color and any width. You can even put your photos in a heart shape or round shape. You can add a photo as the page background (fading it out if you wish). It takes a while to know all the things the program can let you do, but I’ve been using it for several years, and the variety of options is incredible. It has stickers and other stuff, too, like Shutterfly, and you can choose what fonts you use. But it has a lot of options I haven’t seen from any other company, and some pretty good deals if you watch for sales. If you buy a voucher, you have till late March to make your book(s).

Obviously I don’t get any money from the company. But if you have some photos you’ve been wanting to make into a book, this might be a good time to try them out. Anyone who has seen the link to my wedding album photo book, this is the company I used to make it. (No, I won’t post the link publicly, but anyone who has my e-mail address can e-mail me and ask to see the link to the book.)
