  1. 🙂 Despite getting worked up sometimes about challenging homework assignments, my younger son made all A’s for fall semester (which just ended a week ago and report cards came out this week).

😦 My German class at college was cancelled due to too few students having signed up. The college is in a bad deficit situation between declining enrollment and the state (IL) not paying apportionment due to their fiscal mess. Some of my co-workers are now former co-workers because of jobs being eliminated to save money. So I’m glad I still have a job, and I can’t really complain about not being able to take a class I wasn’t even paying tuition for (tuition is free for employees and their dependents). But I’m definitely disappointed. I really enjoyed it fall semester and was looking forward to starting up again on Tuesday.

  2. Good for your son, Pauline. I hope it is a trend.

🙂 We have several people we know with cancer who recently got ‘all clear’ medical tests. Such a relief for them and for those who love them.

🙂 We have hot and cold running water again. What a blessing! What a blessing are the mechanics and technicians who do their jobs efficiently and well!

  3. 😦 Severe cold weather

    🙂 Beautiful blue skies

🙂 Lots of wood in the wood room and furnace is happily blazing away

😦 Tragic accident in my sister’s extended family

😦 Husband tweaked his back earlier this week 🙂 he is feeling better and managed to get some more firewood into the house

🙂 Still loving my job – getting a head start on summer camps planning already. Our theme is “Shift” with Romans 12: 1-2 as are theme verse.

  4. 🙂 A 3-day weekend (thanks to the hire anniversary day off I managed to get for Monday)

🙂 Getting some things done around the house

🙂 Delicate cycle on washer works OK. It’s the last and now only one that works. Once that goes, it’s curtains for this nearly 30-year-old appliance. I don’t think I paid more than maybe $300 for it at the time.

😦 🙂 It’ll be a long day tomorrow with a long-distance (way on the other side of LA) baby shower to attend after church. I’m not big on showers generally, but this one’s special, it’s for my friend’s daughter who’s expecting twin girls in March.

🙂 Back to cleaning out the kitchen cabinets for the Salvation Army …

  5. Speaking of baby showers. . .Emily & I were recently talking about how these days, women have baby showers for the babies that come after the first one. Aren’t baby showers supposed to be for the first baby, or if the next one comes several years after the first?

Emily knows of a woman who had a shower for each of her five children, & they were only a couple years or so apart.

I can see if a lady has a boy & is now expecting a girl (or vice versa), that would be a good reason.

Are Emily & I just being persnickety, or do we have a point?

  6. Most of the churches I’ve attended give you one shower for the first baby you have with them. That seems reasonable to me.

If your friends want to give presents for subsequent children, that’s their choice–as it should be.

Four children, four different churches, three different states . . . But I only had showers for the first one and 12 years later for that girl.

Generous people gave us many gifts in between, particularly hand me downs and I rarely bought my children clothing. That was particularly helpful at various periods in our life.

With the surprising female, however, I sent my husband out to buy an unneeded pink receiving blanket to bring her home in. I was a little disappointed we were given so many adorable pink outfits as gifts–I couldn’t justify buying something cute I liked!

Third son wore so many hand me downs from the hand me down wearing brothers, that we joked he only wore pre-stained clothing! He was 10 the first time I bought him a new pair of jeans, and totally scandalized when I handed them to him in the store to try on.

    “Right here?!”

    He’d never heard of a dressing room before . . .

Which may explain why none of them care much what they wear!

    I was such a terrible mother . . .

  7. Another friend of mine brought this up also.

In this case the mom-to-be already has a boy who’s 3.

But anticipating twins (eek) and girls this second time around, I think they decided it would be OK for an exception. They’re really going to need a lot of stuff.

  8. 🙂 Delivered a box full of dishes and mugs and glasses to the Salvation Army.

🙂 I was debating about one holiday mug I found in the cupboard, it was so beautiful. It was initially in the give-away box, but then I thought, well, maybe I’ll keep it … But while putting it back on the shelf I banged it on something and … It broke.

🙂 Trash! Now I don’t have to worry about who gets it.

  9. I think that I was given showers for all four of mine. With the fourth I protested and told them if they wanted to give me a shower then make it a hand me down shower of things they still had or got at a thrift store.

🙂 got three pages done of a newsletter last night and hope to finish today. Need to get it done before school begins.

    🙂 He knew the Lord.

🙂 Second sibling and spouse found a better apartment. Their current one has a mouse and air quality problems which made them nervous about the coming little one’s health.

  11. 😦 My husband and I are both staying home sick from church.

😦 For the last 36 hours or so, I would have happily borrowed someone else’s head.

🙂 I made the cookies I signed up for a couple of weeks ago and froze them, so I didn’t have to worry about them when I was sick. I also finished the part of my editing that I “had to” do this weekend. (Freelancers don’t get paid sick days.)

🙂 Being sick does mean I don’t have to go out in the snow and cold today.

  12. Why is it that children, even adult children, know how to press your buttons best–and like to choose bewildering times when you not only don’t deserve it, but you have better things to be upset about?

Not pointing any fingers here, but I sure would like to . . . grrrrrrr.

Lovely rain. It’s supposed to rain for four straight days netting up to maybe even 4 inches.

I have a lot of writing work to do in the next 2.5 days, despite the family criticism.
