  1. Good morning in Atlanta! It’s warm with a little fog. We are at the medical building early. Traffic was light, I assume because of Christmas.

It’s so nice to have son home and hear him say, “I love you both so much.”

Brother enjoyed a bowl of my chili and said approving words when comparing it to some he’d recently had at a Christmas gathering.

  2. Good afternoon! I hope you are all enjoying Christmas activities not getting stressed out by them. Unfortunately, here all of the talk is about Gammo, the celebration of Mohammed’s birthday which will happen Wednesday night. I have had a few interesting conversations with people since I’ve been back. I am hoping to get out visiting next week to see friends before I start back to work.

  3. Musical Advent Calendar – Day 22: Magnum Mysterium is usually sung on Christmas morning during Matins. There are many settings of the ancient Latin text, but Tomas Luis de Victoria’s (1548-1611) haunting polyphonic setting is my favourite.

    O great mystery,
    and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
    lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
    was worthy to bear
    Christ the Lord.
    Alleluia

  4. At last, it’s the last day of school. Testing all day. Sometimes I like to see the students squirm as they realize they should have paid closer attention to the material.

  5. Aji, isn’t that the one where there is an all night preaching?

The hordes descend upon us today. Looking forward to seeing eldest sibling, eldest sibling-in-law, eldest niece and the four nephews. I’ve got a couples of Christmas gifts to finish sewing before they arrive, though, as they always want me if I’m locked away in my room too long.

  6. Good Morning! It is 33 degrees at my house….as we drove in to town, we noticed it is 43 degrees….much nicer temps in town…much nicer surroundings at home 🙂
Furnace is in and working…it is quieter and more efficient…thankful!
Have a blessed day….I’ll be crossing the road to work in just about an hour…dealing with harried shoppers may be fun…and challenging today!

  7. A lovely wreath Cheryl, and so suited to you.

Peter, for shame, for shame, for shame. Innocent little angels that they are and you being so cruel. Why you could damage their precious little psyches with that attitude. 😉

Lots of things to do today, once I can get the rest of this household stirring. Pictures, to hang, linens to iron, cleaning to do. Yes, the dust will be flying around H House.

  8. Actually the wreath isn’t mine. My sister-in-law (a former librarian) made it, and it hangs in their entryway. I think it’s pretty cool. Last time we were over there I snapped a photo for y’all, and figured people might guess right away that it was my photo. 🙂

  9. I appreciate Michelle’s blog post. I lost my dad unexpectedly last year on my daughter’s birthday and the day after mine, between Christmas and New Years. I am grateful I do not have to be concerned about him being able to breathe or being hospitalized anymore. He died as he wanted–in his sleep. He hung on far longer than many would have with all that was against him and he worked at home until his last day. It is far more difficult for my mom now. Grief is always hard and always different for each of us. Getting used to new patterns and the shift in relationships is also not easy. I would hate to do it all without The Holy Spirit who comforts us and gives us His fruit. Praise the Lord for coming, dying, giving!

  10. What are the pages in the wreath?

We had some good (for us drought survivors) rain last night, about an inch I think this morning is blustery and overcast and wet (and muddy inside where the dogs come in and out of the doggie door). I will have to clean that up and get some of my throw rugs down again as we head into (hopefully) a rainy season in the next few months.

I still have that sore throat from last week, it’s now mostly on the right side (and kind of in my ear), very annoying, but maybe some viral infection I just can’t shake. It’s worse in the mornings.

We had our Christmas lunch at work yesterday, Mexican rather than the lavish turkey and roast beef spread we used to have catered when we were much bigger.

This was also catered but kind of unremarkable. Still, nice (and almost surprising) they did anything And it meant I was able to save yesterday’s packed lunch for today, it’s still in the work refrigerator.

    Beet Hover rocks.

  11. It is forty eight here in my bedroom. I might need to get the fire going. We have been out getting the chores done so it is comfortable in here.

  12. Kare, when I told 3rd Arrow about Janice’s phone’s autocorrect changing Beethoven to Beet hover, she was thinking exactly along your lines, saying, “More like autowrong!” 🙂

For some reason, Cheryl’s “beets hovering over a piano” reminded me of “chestnuts roasting on an open fire.”

Do we have a food and music thread going again? 🙂

Janice, I’ve got several books about Beethoven checked out from the library, not to mention CDs of all his symphonies and piano concertos and a few other works of his. He was born in December 1770, and is my “Composer of the Month” right now.

Which Beethoven music was your son playing?

  13. I’m glad KI, it’s been a tough year for your family.

20 years out, I miss my mom but am not so haggard-feeling about it all. The Adorables and time have helped.

My brother’s comment this morning when I mentioned the anniversary: “Wow, oh wow, things have changed.”

His three-month old baby is now a sophomore in college, 6’5″!

  14. This is the recap of the cookie party which I just posted on FB:

CR’s annual cookie party has morphed over the 13 years we’ve been hosting. When she was 10, I picked her and four friends up after the last day of school before Christmas, and took them to see a movie. We had dinner when we got home, they decorated cookies, watched another movie and had a sleepover. Let the holidays begin!

This year, we had 25 for dinner (okay, 12 were us), and they decorated a lot of cookies, ate lasagna, chatted up a storm and consumed 1/2 bottle of brandy, 8 beers, unknown bottles of wine, some whiskey and then went to see the newest Star Wars–the late night showing.

While this has not been true the last couple years, I spent my morning cleaning up the kitchen and putting the house back into order! Let the holiday celebrations continue!

And, as luck would have it, just as I finished washing the last platter, the house cleaner walked in! I thought she wasn’t coming today . . .

I’m sure they had designated drivers!

  15. Donna, I don’t remember what book was used to make the wreath; she made it several years ago and did tell us at the time. As I recall it was one that wasn’t worth reading, so the wreath is a better use of the paper.

  16. Roscuro, yes, that’s the one. The preaching is only done in certain places so people travel during the day then are up all night and come home and sleep the next day. Not everyone goes. Some stay home with the small children and have a special meal at home.

  17. The mail lady just came. She was early today, she has been getting here around 5 or 6! With Mr. P getting his medications through the VA there is often something to sign for and Dear Amos always lets me know when she is here. I walked out just now and there was a box addressed to ME!!!!! It is a Christmas Ornament from JH Ranch. You know BG and I are scheduled to go next June. How nice of them! I put it under the tree and when she gets home I am going to have her hang it. 🙂

  18. I’m looking for a good 8-week Bible study on prayer. I’ve jettisoned three already . . . My ladies do not want to do a lot of homework, but they like good discussion questions–which they discuss with their lengthy knowledge of walking with God.

    Any suggestions?

I’ve been using IVPress studies–they like that format–but the last two were done by an author we had trouble with and he, of course, has written the Lord’s Prayer study.

This time I started with Lutheran studies, but they’re a thicket, too!

I’m half wondering if I should take those Adventures in Prayer blog posts and form a Bible study around them, asking the questions myself. But that would be a LOT of work.

So, am I lazy? Pragmatic? Not done hunting yet?

    I’ll take suggestions!

  19. So, does Beet Hover mean music that hovers in one’s head while the listener contemplates its beauty? Or is it music that lingers over a garden of red root vegetables?
