Thank you for the comments and prayers for BG yesterday. We talked to the therapist, she talked to the therapist, and I talked to the therapist. Pretty much the diagnosis is what I have always known. She is a strong willed individual with and extra dose of hard headedness. The prescription was to let her suffer the consequences. Hmmm….who around here has told me that before.
I can’t do it for her and if she doesn’t care about graduating, well… as I told Therapist….I’ve already done it 3 times so I don’t need to do it again FOR her. They talked about goals and even about managing the money she makes. Her dad and I have talked to her about that very same thing, but we are her parents and therefore inherently stupid, but coming from a professional she listened. BG was angry, but I was happy and felt I got my money’s worth.
Last night she, Mr P, and I had family dinner. She wanted to take her meal to her room and eat, but we managed to get through a meal together and no one’s head exploded.
Oh, and I had put her on restriction Monday night for a week and a half. She dropped me off at my office at 4:15, at 5:15 as I was talking to Mr. P before going to the grocery store he told me she wasn’t home yet. She had gone to a friend’s house and then to the store for her mother. I had to remind her what the definition of restriction was—You are either at work or at school or at home. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. Strong willed? Hardheaded? Or just plain defiant?
Kim, we didn’t have the same problem with Chuck. But after he graduated from HS, he wanted to be on his own. So he worked as a bussboy/cook at Three Chefs and moved out to live with his friends and joined a band. Chuck was a guitarist and was going to be a famous rock star. He stayed out almost a year. We had a good relationship, but we did not subsidize his lifestyle. He wanted to be on his own. We let him be on his own. It was difficult but the lesson was learned.
He decided to return home and go to Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) for an associate degree. He later said about his experience. “I had it figured, I could live on what I made but that “miscellaneous” killed me.” He got his Associates and went on to USC-Columbia.
My point in .all this:
You learn some thing from books and teachers.
You learn some things from observing others.
You learn some things the hard way.
Some people never learn. I used to drop a dollar in their hats occasionally. I don’t anymore.
But I help support The Storehouse and like organizations.
Kim – BG reminds me so much of my Emily. Even now, as a responsible & pretty mature adult of 26 years of age, she resists “suggestions” from me. She is also very aware of her own stubbornness, but chooses not to overcome it.
My PT is definitely helping. I continue to make improvement. Today he could bring my left arm nearly straight above my head as I lay on my back. Certainly some discomfort involved in doing that, but doable all the same, something I was nowhere capable of doing when I started therapy 12 days ago.
I could also pull the door shut with my left hand when I got into the car to go to my appointment (and again when going back home). The other times I’ve driven in recent weeks, I had to use my right hand to pull the driver’s door shut. I would sit in the driver’s seat, knees facing outside, feet on the ground, and pull the door slightly shut (without banging into my knees 😉 ), then swing my legs inside the car, reach my right arm across my upper body and pull the door shut the rest of the way. Nice to be able to use my left arm again, reaching straight out and closing the door without feeling like the inside of my upper arm was getting ripped up.
I have one more appointment scheduled for a week from today, where he’ll check my progress against the initial range-of-motion measurements he got at my first appointment, and at which time we’ll determine what, if any, further treatment I might need. It is looking hopeful that only home care, i.e., doing my exercises, will be enough, with maybe a follow-up now and then, on a much less vigorous schedule. We’ll see.
Went for my knee. It’s improved, but I’ll need the brace for a while yet. And it’s still just a temporary fix.
And as a bonus, the doc noticed I was favoring my right arm which has been horribly sore from using a crutch. I have bad tendonitis from the elbow to the wrist as well as a bad shoulder. So I had an extremely painful injection in the elbow too which is still hurting like crazy. Yay me. 😦
My SIL decided he better take the year long sub job. It is less pay than what he had been earning on his last sub job, plus it is not in his new field. I am not sure that he signed the final papers yet.
Mike is doing very well with PT. His knees are almost straight which is rather amazing because I have never known him to be able to totally straighten his legs in the past. He generally is doing the exercises at home and the icing that they requested. His problem is that he would not do it when we got home from the hospital and now they have to repair that damage. Do what the doctor says if you are taking a problem to a doctor.

Prayer today for thirteen year old daughter as she continues to spiral down. Back to being a vegetarian for her.

Back to the ortho this afternoon at 2. I’ll let you know how it went when I get back.

Looks like AJ has his ortho appointment the same time I have my PT session (1:00 Central). We can compare notes on our visits. 😉
Praying, everyone.
