On this day in 1471 King Henry VI was killed in the tower of London. Edward IV took the throne.

In 1819 bicycles were first seen in the U.S. in New York City. They were originally known as “swift walkers.”

In 1881 the American branch of the Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton.

In 1970 the National Guard was mobilized to quell disturbances at Ohio State University.

And in 1980 the movie “The Empire Strikes Back” was released.

    Son is suppose to be home this weekend so I am trying to get ready for his visit.

    I have been going through my cookbooks to find which I want to donate. I have a few that are local church cookbooks with recipes contributed by family members or friends. Does that mean I need to keep the books?

  4. The book, Spoken Moments, compiled by Yvonne Lehman is out. I have a story in it. All proceeds from sales go to Samaritan’s Purse if anyone wishes to purchase a book. I do not receive anything from sales.

    People used to say that.
    Then they came out with a soap that floats. Along with Ivory. They sponsored a radio program and the announcer closed with . “Well I Swan, how about you?”

  8. It is sad we are losing some of our southern idioms. I have heard old country people say “I’ll hope you do that” meaning they would help.
    One of the agents lost her husband early this morning. They knew it was coming, but it is always hard when it happens. They have been married 45 years. It was a second marriage for both, but he was the only father her children ever knew.
    Time to start my day.

    Pastor Steve took on four rabbits to chase last night. He’s closing out rabbit chasing for the summer. Starting again in the fall.

    1. Is there anything in the Bible about Faith Promise Giving? If so, how does it work and what are any verses to support it?
    I can’t think of a single reference.
    2. Tell us about the after death experience and those ho come back to tell us what they saw.
    He commented a bit on this. He had a heart attack several years ago and was essentially dead. He was in a hospital visiting patients when it occurred. He was in a coma for two days and essentially dead. He remembers nothing.
    3. Should I pray about everything or just what I need? Is it true that God wants us to pray about a house to sell, for instance?
    Yes. He quotes G. Campbell Morgan on someone asking if it’s ok to pray about small things as well as big.. Morgan says, “Madam, all your problems look little to God.”
    4. Is whatever happens God’s will for our lives?
    Complex answer:
    a. God is the God who is God over small details.
    b. God is holy. Nothing sinful can be called ,”the will of God”.
    c. God can make bad things work for good.

  16. Hello, I’ve been preoccupied lately, so haven’t dropped by lately. Things have been happening and I think a door just slammed shut. It looks like, for the foreseeable future, I will not be able to return to The Gambia due to my health. The agency still wants me to work with them, however, so who knows? I may end up in some other place.

    I haven’t caught up with the posts, but I did see Karen’s questions on Monday. I have recently come across some excellent resources on that very issue.     It’s my favorite movie theme song. 🙂

    If for some reason I ever need entrance music, that’d be it. 🙂
    So when my daughter gets married, that’s what I want played when I walk her down the aisle. And she totally loves that idea. 🙂

    My daughter loves Vader too, well to be honest, she loves Anakin Skywalker. Her first crush just had to be the guy who would become the most evil man in the universe. I’m still a little stumped though on how that skinny, whiny voiced, white kid turned into a large, deep voiced, black man though….

    The dark side really changes ya’ I guess. 🙂

  18. I’ve said this before, but somehow I never got hooked in to the Star Wars trend. Saw the movies, liked them, enjoyed them. But … ?

    Meanwhile, does anyone here realize that Back to the Future (1985), which celebrates is 30th anniversary this year, has become something of a cult film that continues to gather all kinds of followers?

  19. Interesting bat article, Peter, it’s now been Facebook-ed and tweeted as I am linked to a number of people who work in (or are otherwise interested in) animal- and wildlife-elated issues. We have bats in California (aren’t they everywhere?) but they aren’t a common thing you run across. I think they’ve hit the news recently with cases of rabies being identified.

  20. Great Star Wars scene; probably my favorite plot development in all movies, even though it presents some consistency issue, but I can look past them just for how cool the idea is and how well the scene was executed (especially before Luke’s scream was added in the re-releases).

  22. Since we’re on a Star Wars thread today, how about something Mrs L saw on FB? A picture of Yoda with an Amish beard and hat, and the title “Yoder”. He was saying “may the Horse be with you.”

  23. The granddaughters are all about Star Wars, too. I suspect it has something to do with Disney buying up those rights. Their Dad just bought a black Honda Fit and they call it the Darth Vadar car.

  25. My young relatives went through a period where they loved Star Wars. Eldest Niece liked Darth Vader – she also liked the Witch King of Angmar from Lord of the Rings. We teased her that she always rooted for the villain. She’s grown out of that phase (Can’t believe she’s a teenager now!) and I enjoy hearing her thoughtful analysis of movies and books. I watched the original Star Wars for the first time in my early twenties. I could see how they were popular (well, except for the ridiculous scenes with Jabba the Hut), but science fiction fantasy is something in which I only take a passing interest. I tried watching the prequels, but found the story of Anakim’s origins disturbing in its imitation of Christianity. Also the screenwriting was terrible, which makes me think of this song:

    Oh, grief. It so often comes when you least expect it and wallops–even in a good way.

    I’ve been running errands all morning and unearthed an old cassette tape I’d made 20 years ago of the Diamond Head Theater’s production of Pirates of Penzance.

    I was singing along with this terrific production that I recorded it off the radio in a live broadcast.

    I love Pirates of Penzance, and I reflected on how my husband and I employed black humor when our fathers died. “Well, now I’m an orphan, so I do not need to fear the pirates of Penzance,”–they always release orphans.

    The recording ended and I was going to turn it off when I thought, “maybe there will be a reprise and I can sing “Oh Wandering One Again.”

    No reprise.

    Instead, it was my father talking.

    Excuse while I sob some more.

    I haven’t heard my father’s voice in 14-15 years. He died in 2002.

    But 20 years ago, I interviewed him for an oral history project and there it was on that tape marked “Pirates of Penzance part 2.”

    I’ll make copies for my brothers.

    From a genealogist, heed this warning. Don’t throw away those old tapes unless you are absolutely sure there’s nothing on it you want.

    I’m off to listen to dad some more. If the tears ever stop.

  27. I have a recording of my little brother (he was 13) singing “The Wreck of Old 97” with Hank snow. It’s on a reel. I need to check to see if’ I have it transferred.

  35. I went back to the photo gallery to find Chas’ beautiful pet rock. When I enlarged it, I got the message that the internet had stopped and the tab had crashed. Well, guess you did not know the strength of your pet rock, Chas! I think the first stone was thrown and went off target and hit my phone and crashed the tab!!!
