  1. Good early morning for some folks, obviously too early to be on the blog for most!

Husband was told all four tires need replacement due to dry rot. Truly, at this point in tax season the drivers have dry rot, too.

Now I have to shop for tires, just another detour from what I was expecting to accomplish today.

  3. Janice, just about three weeks ago I bought four Michelins for my 2007 Grand Marquis. I paid $714.05 for four. I could have saved about $50 at Sam’s Club, and there are cheaper tires. But these had over 60,000 miles on them and I hope for another 60k. I chose Downtown Tire over Sam’s because I trust the service mere.
I don’t understand “dry rot” on a 2007 tire. I have the original Firestones on my 2001 Ranger. I will need tires for it within the year because of wear. And that at about 35,000 miles. But not because of dry rot.
I would get a second opinion on the “dry rot” thing.

  4. Replacing tires is not an emergency, unless one is blown. Tomorrow is as good as today if your schedule is tight. If they didn’t fail last week, it likely won’t happen this week. Other than blowouts, the only things that need immediate attention is when the oil, temperature and gas lights come on.. (unless it’s raining and your wipers don’t work) 🙂 You get the gist

  5. In the devotional book I am reading in, part of the message on the 23rd reads, “In tough times, Paul was stretched beyond his human capacity, yet he experienced deliverence. From the abyss, Paul asked not, ‘Why me, Lord?’ but ‘What do you want me to understand from this situation?’ Paul concluded that everything happened ‘that we might not rely on ourselves but on God.”

I think that reiterates what Karen O posted and it can apply to where so many of us are at. We aren’t asking why me, but we are wondering how much more we have to give up to prove to God that we truly know in our heart of hearts that it all belongs to Him and He is the good Shepherd Who meets our needs. Trust does not come easily when people have gone through one thing after another, but recognition must be given that He has been with us as a comfort and help through it all.

  6. Thank you, Chas. That is helpful. I have been using a place for years that I trusted, but am now having a few doubts about because a friend may have gotten a bad deal there. I wondered about Sam’s since I have never used them.

  7. To clarify some of what I wrote yesterday:

I still don’t want to lose my house (mostly for Forrest’s sake), & I still pray for my husband to be healed, & to have many more years of healthy life. God knows those are my preferences, & I can’t pretend they’re not. But in surrendering them to Him, I know that whatever happens, He will not leave nor forsake me, & He will help me through whatever is to be. And yes, there is still a bit of a struggle within me to fully & finally release those longings to Him, but I do have so much more peace about it all.

Often, when we give something up to the Lord, He gives it right back, & it feels more like a blessing than something we are holding onto for dear life.

If anyone thought Marilyn’s words sounded harsh in any way, let me assure you that she writes with great compassion, & from her own experience. She & her husband went through a devastating experience a few years ago that, like Kim, killed her husband’s confidence, & left them feeling like they were floundering. Also, her husband is a severe diabetic, so she knows first-hand about the fear of losing one’s husband.

(The outcome of that devastating experience is that God moved him into a new ministry, where, now in his 60s, he has been flourishing as never before.)

  8. Janice, on anything car or truck related, I prefer to do business with local people and people I know and trust. While it may cost a little more in the long view it is worth it. If you are skeptical take it to another repair shop and play dumb woman and ask them for their suggestion. If they say the same as the first go back to who you know with confidence.

  9. Kathaleena, Cheryl and Karen and anyone else who may have posted to me yesterday, first of all thank you for taking time to consider me. Somehow to know you aren’t alone makes the burden just a little lighter.

The words my father said to me and I hated the most whenever I experienced ostracism from my peers at school, lack of a dumb boy liking me, mother’s alcoholism, and a host of other things, “Learn from this. Let it make you a stronger and better person.” To which my response was to ask when will I be strong enough and when will I be good enough? Why aren’t I enough now?

To top things off in addition to the 10K in income I have lost I found out yesterday that we will lose another 9k a year beginning in September. Since I am the only one able to work right now it falls to me to make up the shortage. I have always been able to trust God in the past and somehow at the last minute something would come through. Now I have someone else in the equation. Whether it is warranted or not I feel the pressure on my shoulders.
I just don’t see how we can get ahead right now and we are looking at more medical expenses coming up by Fall.

On the child support issue- The child support follows the child. It is money taken out of George’s income by the state and paid to me. It hits my bank account and I transfer it back to his because the child is living with him. He sold his house and he and the child live with his mother. He makes 3 times what I do and acts like he is one step from being homeless because I haven’t gone to the bank and transferred the money. I still spend money on said child and she works. I am not begrudging giving the money back to him if it is going to her but the constant dunning wears on me.

  10. What Karen wrote yesterday — and what we all go through with the trials and tribulations of this life — brought me back to Rom. 8:28, that God works ALL things together for good to those who love him and are called according to his purpose.

He gives us the strength and the grace as we need it, not beforehand (which is why contemplating the future causes us such anxiety, we can’t fathom, from where we stand now, how we’d ever cope with such loss or sadness or devastation in our lives).

But when bad stuff happens, as it will, it is all used by him for our good and for our growth in trusting & loving him more.

  11. Kim, I assume Mr. P gets disability or retirement or something? It seems to me that as long as he has any income coming in, you can choose to think, “I’m married, he’s the provider, I’m earning only supplemental income and it’s OK.” You like to work and you need to work . . . but choose not to stress over money. Ultimately it’s on God’s shoulders, but secondly you aren’t the man of the house and it isn’t your concern either. Do what you can the best you can, and that’s all you can do.

    That’s my two cents.

  12. I need tires, too — I’ve been happy with America’s Tires, on the last set I bought (wranglers) I went ahead and purchased the “insurance” on each tire ($7 or something like that?). It paid off as within the year I had to use it to replace one tire that couldn’t be fixed.

They lasted a long time, but they’re getting worn and my mechanic suggested I get them replaced by (last) Christmas. He sells tires there and I’m taking it in for service next Tuesday (overdue), so I need to talk to him about whether he’ll match the best price etc.

Cars. So expensive just to keep ’em on the road.

  14. In my prayer journal this morning when I was writing down blog family names and asking for God’s help, I ended the prayer, “Work all things for good for them for they love You and are called by You.”

God always repeats what he wants to emphasize. So then, I just now read that verse in Donna’s post!

It turns on…the motor starts but it won’t pump water for some reason….I’ve only had it since Christmas! grrrrr And of course I threw away the box and receipt thinking nothing would go wrong with this amazing technology of man 😦

  16. Chas- Some experts recommend not using tires that are more than 6 years old because the rubber breaks down over time, especially if the car is out in the weather a lot. And I agree about going to a local tire store. Sam’s Club and Walmart just want your money and don’t know you. I also wonder how much the installers know about tires other than that they are black, made of rubber and need air in them.

Plus, I found that Walmart sells tires at a low price, but then adds on charges for mounting and balancing, as well as an extra amount just to get “free” tire rotations.

  17. Tires- Costco has the cheapest. They inflate them with nitrogen instead of air. Nitrogen doesn’t expand with heat like air does. The young men who work there seemed knowledgeable. Since they don’t sell service or anything else there, I see no reason for them to make up needs for repair or service. Costco is nationwide, so you can get new tires from them almost anywhere. Besides that, prices are set by headquarters.

There is no sales tax in Oregon, so getting tires in Oregon is 9+% cheaper than here in California. I also get my gasoline in Oregon; 40 cents a gallon cheaper in Oregon than in California- taxes!

  18. Just thinking that instead of worrying, we need to be reviewing when God showed up in the past to provide.

As a homeschool mom, I felt tremendous pressure for going against the flow. Not only that, but an across the street neighbor was on the county school board. To add additional authority, she was my high school senior year English teacher and her dad was our county’s former Superintendent. Talk about a pressurized can I was sitting in feeling watched. Well, son is in the combo Grad/PhD program in none other than English. God laughs at our worries, frets, and concerns while we cry, pull out graying hair, and go ballistic on a bag of chips. He did more than I could have possibly thought or imagined as a blessing on son’s education. He is up in heaven saying something like, “You should have trusted me more instead of doing all those other ineffective things. You could have prayed more and worried less.”

  20. Michelins are made in Spartanburg, SC. You can’t go by the name anymore. My son works for a Japanese owned company. His plant is in Greensboro, NC.

Peter. The guy at the tire store told me that every tire has a date of manufacture on it. If the inspector doesn’t like you for some reason, he can fail the car if the tire is over six years old.
I have never had s problem with it.

  21. And Cheryl,

I noticed for the first time that pics from you and I in the slideshow include the camera info, zoom, and shutter speed used in the photo. Those with IPhones seem to do the same, but minus the zoom and shutter speed. That could be useful for future shooting. I don’t know how I missed that before. 🙂

  23. The tires were not the originals. I had Harmony by Michelin put on. Tomorrow I will check prices at nearby stores. I am driving the car with the spare on it.
Like all good plumbers with leaky pipes, we do not have good track of personal files so I am not sure how old these tires are. This is the car that I owned for one month before it was slammed into by a car at a red light as I was on my way to hear Chip Ingram do a Bible study, Son Rise, at 6:30 a.m. at Walk Thru the Bible. The car was hit hard by a Mustang that was totaled. I noticed afterward that one tire always wore on the side more than others. That may be the reason the tire went. Husband has a one track mind(taxes, taxes, taxes, get um done) so he would not have noticed.

  24. No more digging! I did consider that when their trench got so deep that they were going to break through to the other side of the world.

The great digging took place on the front lawn. What a wonderful mess it made that a little boy would love! But only a little boy, not a mom who has to clean Georgia red clay mud stains off his jeans.

  25. I have a large message, a picture, stuck in my outbox. It won’t delete and I can’t get rid of it. I used the wrong email address to send it and have already resent with the right address. Just can’t get rid of this old message. Computers can be so frustrating.
