Good Morning!

On this day in 1642 astronomer Galileo Galilei died in Arcetri, Italy. 

In 1838 Alfred Vail demonstrated a telegraph code he had devised using dots and dashes as letters. The code was the predecessor to Samuel Morse’s code. 

In 1856 Borax (hydrated sodium borate) was discovered by Dr. John Veatch. 

In 1889 the tabulating machine was patented by Dr. Herman Hollerith. His firm, Tabulating Machine Company, later became International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). 

And in 1918 President Woodrow Wilson announced his Fourteen Points as the basis for peace upon the end of World War I.

  4. Good morning. It’s 30 in Houston–quite cold to us! We’re only supposed to reach 40 today.

    The house is quiet. Becca and I just finished snuggling…God blessed me richly with the gift of my youngest daughter. My heart feels full so full of love…

  5. We were supposed to be -9 overnight; it was one degree when I was getting ready for bed. I don’t want to even step outside today, and as far as I know I won’t have to.

  6. My weather app says it is 9 degrees here. I just updated it. It had dropped down from 10 degrees. I thought the temp would go up instead of going down during the daylight hours. I will not venture out except maybe to get the mail. We are now in the single digits. We rarely see that here.

  7. Ugh, You made me look and it’s 23 degrees here with a high of 40. We were going to be very adventurous today and try to make the Texas History Museum and the LBJ Library. Now I am thinking it might not be a good idea to drag an 8 week old baby around in the cold,

  8. It’s cold here as well, and I don’t have to go outside unless it’s an emergency. We have no school again since the wind chill is around -25.

    So, since so many of us are home bound, let’s “play” a little game. Finish this sentence: “It’s so cold that…”

    I’ll start: It’s so cold that even Mumsee won’t go to the dog park! 😉

  9. Anyone else watching at laughing at the Chris Christie/Dallas Cowboy controversy? Yesterday the TV was on one of the sports stations and that is all they could talk about and how it didn’t look presidential. The three states that have teams who may go to the Super Bowl all add up to 38 electoral votes but he was smart and calculating because even if he lost those states it wouldn’t matter because the 38 electoral votes from Texas would make up for it.

    Personally I am loving it. The media had already annointed him as the Republican candidate and were starting to shove him down our throats. As far as I am concerned he isn’t the President and who cares who his favorite team is. They also attached him for closing down the area surrounding the stadium at last years Super Bowl so that no one in NJ made any money and people had to ride buses in to the stadium but he rode in and out in a big black SUV.

    I don’t know who I want to be the Republican candidate but I don’t want the media picking them for me and I don’t want Chris Christie. Don’t ask me to back up my dislike of him, I can’t explain it, I just don’t like him.

  12. Kim- I don’t like Christie either because he makes RINOs look like Conservatives. The only thing I like about him is he’s tough. And I fully agree that Republicans need to stop looking to the Liberal media for advice. They need to ask us, the common people who make up the party, what we think.

  14. Peter, it’s called Potomac Fever. Politicians get it when they get inside the beltway. They are so immersed in what’s happening there that they can’t imagine a real world out there.
    So far, Mark Meadows, our Congressman, has come home every Friday.
    That works as an antidote.

  15. Good Morning…it is currently 38 degrees in the forest…with an expected high of 50! We should have some serious snow melt happening before the next cold front moves in tonight bringing snow and plummenting temps!
    So I guess my take on the “it’s so cold that…our foot of snow has now been reduced to about four inches!” Stay warm everyone 🙂

  17. We’re headed up to 72 today, a definite cool-down from the earlier part of the week. 🙂 Brrr. A very slight chance of rain on Saturday, let’s hope …

    It’s so cold I can’t wear my sandals.

    A church family is letting a few of us use their house that day (they’re away on vacation) for a retirement dinner for one of our little group. Their backyard literally overlooks the beach & Pacific Ocean, so I’ll be bringing the camera along to catch the sunset.

    We have “mobility” (as in smartphone) training at work this morning (advanced tips on posting stories, videos, etc.) and then I have a 6 p.m. meeting to cover where people will be showing up in probably fairly large numbers to complain about losing some traffic lanes on the main thoroughfare into the port area where they (and I) live. All part of LA mayor’s idea to make the city’s main boulevards prettier and more pedestrian-friendly.

    I really don’t want to go to that, but I pretty much have to, I’m afraid.

    So, long day ahead — although it will make up the time I missed Tuesday to get Tess to the vet. She’s now fine, by the way. Dogs.

  18. No above zero around here. Schools were mostly delayed a couple of hours. Most close at -40, but some don’t at all. They give excused absences, however. I don’t have to deal with any of that, at any rate.

    We’ve been staying at my mom’s and will be for a bit. Her days are ok; her evenings a nightmare. Still, it is a privilege to serve her in this way. God graced me to forgive her many years ago, although I had to do it over and over for a lot of years. Like all of us, she has her wonderful points and the just plain bad ones. I haven’t been able to relax for the whole time and have gotten very little sleep. Eating has also not been good. The good thing there is that I may lose a few pounds.

    Those who think God does not work in our lives have no clue how we may have been or what we might have become without His intervention. I still have lots of faults etc. but He has changed me. I know He still will. I know He is with me, loves me and will help me through it all. Thanks so much for the prayer!

  23. Good morning! We are having a much warmer day than yesterday. The winter wonderland has fallen from the trees. I think the high is to be about 40 today with snow returning tonight and through Saturday.

    It is so cold that I had to cook all day. I did do that yesterday. But in preparation for the birth of my 16th grandchild. I always go and stay a week to help mom. Making lots of goodies to feed her family. I made beans, calabacitas, and barbacoa yesterday, along with baking a turkey. Today I have borscht, turkey soup, and posole cooking.

Free, I just downloaded it, apparently good for breaking news (and you can, I think, format it for specific kinds of news you’re interested in) — looks like they collate from wire and other news sources.

  28. Eighteen year old noted comet Lovejoy in the southeast skies last night. I did not know it was there. I must really be falling down on the news. It was pretty and hopefully we will see it several more times if the fog lifts.

  29. Mumsee, with as many people as you have in your household, you never lack for news!
    Son has been visiting friends for his last few days in GA. It’s very quiet since Miss Bosley stopped shso, outing out all that she learned at boarding school. She seems to have forgotten how to retrieve since she concentrated so hard on learning new vocabulary. Not much news in times of affliction (let me count the times I blew my nose, etc.). Without Donna passing along the news app, I would be clueless.

    I could have written the same thing about my mom. In her last years, especially her last few weeks, when we knew her death was approaching & she needed much more hands-on help, I helped my mom out a lot in different ways.

    But it was several years before that that God helped me finally come to a place of forgiveness. Like you, I had to do it over & over again. I’m sure that forgiveness helped me to be the daughter Mom needed in those last few years.

  38. I have had virtually no internet today (not even enough to send e-mail most of the day), but seem to have a little bit now. So . . .

    What does it mean when my first photo of the day is numbered 8303 and the last one of the day is 9302? I’m pretty sure it means I took too many photos. 😦

    This has been a very cold day (under zero all day as far as I know), and apparently a good number of birds have made a mental note of the good eating in our yard. Minimally (based on number of birds counted at one time and/or number of each sex counted at one time, though actual totals are probably higher) our feeder tree and the ground beneath it have hosted:
    -20 or so house sparrows
    -one starling
    (There, got those out of the way. The rest are worth seeing.)
    -six cardinals (three males and three females—I know that at least two males grew up here over the summer, so I think this is our resident pair and at least four of their youngsters)
    -one red-bellied woodpecker (probably two, but I never saw the female today)
    -three downy woodpeckers
    -two nuthatches
    -six goldfinches
    -eight pine siskins
    -six house finches
    -three blue jays
    -seven juncos
    -three mourning doves
    -three American tree sparrows
    -six tufted titmice
    -two chickadees

    And realistically it could have been double that number, or more, of several of those.

  42. The problem with digital cameras is how many picture you can take without EVER running out of room.
