Good Morning!

Welcome to the last day of the year. 🙂

Today’s header photo is from Janice. Here’s another. 🙂

  1. 🙂 😆

Aj on yesterday’s thread trying to figure out what those women were talking about.

Aj, if you live another 20 years, you’ll learn to just say “Uh hu” and hope it isn’t something you’re suppo0sed to be doing.

If you have something you need to do in 2014, you need to get to it.
    I’m off to the Y.

  2. I went back and read the rest of last nights thread.

Donna, who may be a block of ice by now, said “we will survive”. Because of that statement, I have this stuck in my head. Thanks Donna. 🙂

  3. I hope those Angelinos are surviving the cold. I’d hate to think of being out in the cold watching a parade. Of course, it sounds great to have 40s in January when it is all of 6°F here.

  4. It is fifty seven degrees in the house this morning. At least, next to the stove it is. Maybe not so much in the bedrooms. But fifty seven is a good number.

Interesting about all of those LA folk getting rescued from their automobiles and housed in a church after the horrific snowstorm. It looked like there was a good quarter inch on some of those cars. Good thing they had the supercats to get them out. Just kidding. I imagine it is not fun to slide off of the road and if your car and tires are not built for it and you didn’t bring anything to get yourself out, it is nice that folk are available to help out.

Neat about the response of those families who missed the flight as well. Good to see credit being given to God.

  5. Well, when I came in from bringing in firewood, I noticed ice on the inside of the back rooms. But the lime tree is not dead so it can’t be too cold.

  6. Is anyone going to stay up to bring in the New Year? No need to, as it’s almost midnight somewhere in the world.

I’ll be at my sister’s house watching the Fiesta Bowl this afternoon with my BIL, who is a graduate of the University of Arizona. It’s the Wildcats vs the Broncos of Boise State. Sorry, mumsee, but this time I root against the Broncs.

  7. Usually I stay up to ring in the new year, but after last night’s bad night of sleep, I don’t think I’ll make it to midnight unless I take a nap today.

But I have too much to do to take a nap today, as I had a headache all day yesterday and got done a lot less than I had hoped for.

    Complain, complain, complain.

How about some cheery news instead? More sunshine today! I think it’s been five days in a row now. Praising God for that!

So “Sunshine on My Shoulders” was a perfect song for today. 🙂 Except I haven’t been out in the sun yet today. It is 0° at 10:11. I will wait for it to warm up some before heading out.

  8. The Crowder song was great, too. Not as familiar to me as the John Denver one (actually, not familiar at all), but a wonderful one to listen to this morning, helping to lift me out of my melancholy.

I thought of the song “I Will Survive”, too, after seeing Donna’s comment on yesterday’s thread, AJ. 🙂

  9. I always liked that song, AJ. And roller skates. Now that’s a throwback video to the ’70s.

I’m adjusting to the 50s in the house.

It’s supposed to get up to 78 again by next Tuesday. 🙂

I probably won’t “stay” up for the turning of the New Year tonight, but I will wake up at midnight because there are always a lot of neighborhood fireworks going off. It spooks the dogs every year and goes on for quite some time.

Cowboy often jumps up on the bed with me until it’s over, poor guy.

But before all that, I’m off to work today (after I make a 2nd cup of hot coffee) to finish up my story on New Year’s resolutions. Maybe they’ll let us off early today if we’re all finished. Then I can bundle up in some cute, matching winter wear and go to the dog park for a little while before it gets dark.

  10. mumsee, I saw that story about the walmart shooting yesterday — I cringed, too, because it’s got all the typical ‘red state’ elements (kids with guns, Walmart) that so many left-coasters love to deride. But I actually never saw anything being said about it. Just really sad.

  11. It was.

It is a beautiful six degrees outside this morning, I did not look at the thermometer when I went out for chores before the sun came up. It is expected to get up to sixteen today.

  12. I think I like John Denver more now than when he was actually popular. But I did enjoy some of his songs in the ’70s, they gave voice to the simple-living, “back-to-nature” movement that was in the wind back in those days.

  13. One of the bio children gave me one of those musical cards early on in the adoption process. It plays I Will Survive. A friend sent the you tube with I Will Survive sung by a space alien until the glistening ball drops on its head. I still play the card and still laugh with the video.

  14. Good Noon!
Phone did not want to connect earlier. I can’t get the header so I am not sure what it is.
Beautiful sunny day, but down in the 40s. That makes for a good polar bear frolic in the ocean for those on January 1st who like to fancy themselves clothed in fur for an insane moment. I have not gotten that crazy yet.
We will probably watch fireworks on the beach at midnight. It is a nice tradition. This year is not so warm as last year.
We have a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle going on. I saw the resort activities listed some cooking contests which is something new. We don’t usually do things on the activities list although once we did get in on the feeding of the fish.

There is a polar bear swim in Lewiston tomorrow but I will not be attending.

  16. Maybe I should ask son to go for “polar bear feet” in the morning. I better not. That would be one of those things to add to a list of, “You would not believe what my mother did!”

  18. Just worked on my goals for 2015 list–which my boss requires for work. I ran them past my husband, after moving him up the personal goals list a couple spots. 🙂

I’ve now retreated to the office while he and my daughter (who is slogging through this really hard Starry Night 1000 piece puzzle we got for Christmas) discuss them.

Maybe we’ll take a hike out of our book today (did not put that on the list), though it’s terribly windy outside!

    (Go ahead and laugh)

Stargazer leaves today and the next time I see him he’ll be a doctor. CR is off to a NYE party with some math/science UCSB friends in the east bay. Maybe she’ll find some romance? 🙂

We’re out to an expensive restaurant dinner with my in-laws and for the first time have been invited to the exclusive (only because we never got an official invite before) NYE party put on by one of the elders at our church. Not sure what we’ll do. I’m pretty sure I’d rather be home reading a good book, however . . . which is what I prefer on NYE!

Enjoy the end of 2014 if I don’t get back. And if you live in California, fill up your car with gas before the taxes go up tomorrow. 😦

  19. Question, since some of you probably have more experience making turkey soup than I do: I compared two recipes, one of which had you boiling the carcass for two hours and one for 45 minutes, so I met in the middle for something like an hour and 15 minutes. (The meat itself also got 35 minutes or more after I removed the bones and added the veggies.) But with pork ribs, the longer you boil before baking, the more tender, and the meat in this soup was a bit tough. Now, I did freeze the carcass so that I wouldn’t have to make soup immediately. Was freezing it a bad idea? Did I boil it too long or too short? I froze the carcass in two parts so I could make two pots of soup, but if there is something I can do differently for the second batch, I’d like to.

I live alone and still didn’t succeed at my Bible reading plan. Kick. Kick. But I’m going in for a re-launch in 2015.

Just interviewed a resolutions/personal change expert/professor/author in PA. I’m newly motivated.

    It can be done!

  24. Cheryl, I don’t think you did anything wrong with the turkey. Sometimes it just turns out that way.

Today was a holiday at work. The COO was going to work half a day to close out the year. I wan’t going to work but I did. The documents came through from the Real Estate Commission to add the new office so I was rushing around to get checks to the Board of Realtors. Then I had another office I had to get trained on something before I go to Austin next week.
Daughter in Law and Tiny Baby Girl will be flying in from Maryland and Grandpa and I will be driving in from here. We have a shopping list of things to take with us so that Mommy won’t have to lug so much on the plane. It’s been a day or two since we bought diapers, wipes, and special baby stuff. I stopped by a consignment shop and picked up a boucy/rocker/play/ seat. As much as we think we want to hold TBG we will have to put her down every now and then and let her entertain herself.

We are going to some church friend’s house for dinner at 7. After that hospitality tents will be set up in downtown Fairhope so we may walk uptown and visit around, but probably not. My New Years Eve tradition is to be safely tucked up in my bed and wake up to the new year on January 1.
Remember folks, this is Amateur Night. True alcoholics don’t get out tonight because most already have a DUI and can’t get another. Tee Totaler’s are scared the drunks will be out and stay home and the the more mature of us have been there done that. So that only leaves people who are not experienced at drinking on the road and they aren’t good judges of if they have had too much to drink or not. Rather than try to figure out what I just said, it is best if you just stay home.

  25. I had failed miserably in my Bible reading plan before the end of January last year. This year I’m going to try the chronological plan, but not stick to the daily readings – if it’s less it’s less, if it’s more, it’s more. If I finish in 1 year or 5 at least I will have finished. 🙂

Kare, you make me feel better. 🙂

And looking ahead with regard to our attitudes toward our enemies, this was a good reminder for me:

    http://www.worldmag.com/2014/12/new_year_s_resolution_a_heart_for_the_lost

“I pray that in this new year, I’ll be more like God’s vessel and less a judge. “Vengeance is mine,” the Lord says—it’s His prerogative to repay wickedness. As they wallow in their depravity and suffer the due penalty of their error, my attitude should be one of sorrow over their lost souls, not smugness (such an ugly word) over what’s to come if they don’t repent.

“I ask God to take away my Jonah-like tendencies and the unrighteous anger that goes along with it. I’m as undeserving of His forgiveness as the most deviant unsaved sinner. There, but for God’s grace, I’d be just as condemned and content in my sin.”

  27. Yep, I went outside and walked around. Fed the guineas, watered the turkeys, chickens, rabbits, goats, dogs, horses, and cows. Fed the horses and cows and dogs and goats. And sure enough, when I stepped in from the ten degrees, I was suddenly warm! Amazing how good fifty seven can feel.

In less than three hours it will be 2015 on the east coast. We are settled in and likely be asleep when it happens.
But when we were young, especially the days we were courting, we used to attend watch night services on New Years Eve. We sang and prayed the new year in. They stopped those in the early sixties. Young people had other things to do.

A couple from church invited us over last night to play games and just hang out….it was a sweet ending to 2014…..we arrived back home right at midnight…I’m so tired….it’s going to be a whole pot of coffee kind of day…and then perhaps a nap!
