Oops, husband could not do what he needed to do on the computer yesterday because his sister asked to borrow his computer and she forgot to disconnect so burned up all of his minutes. He persuaded them to give him some back so he can communicate once in a while.

Well, here in Connecticut, we have gone from sub-zero cold to temps in the 30s and are expecting rain tonight and tomorrow. I am glad, as that will melt and wash away the rest of the ice from the porches and lane. Although I will be sorry to see the snow on the other areas washed away.

The Boy and Nightingale have their weekly Cub Scout meeting tonight. I love seeing them in their uniforms. I’m glad Hubby got to see The Boy in his Cub Scout uniform while in the hospital, before he died. He was very pleased that The Boy was going to be a Cub Scout, and hoped he would go on to be a Boy Scout.

Well,, here we are. Seventeen year old decided she was going to get her GED. So I printed off some math GED questions and handed them to her. I copied them and gave them to the younger two as well. I told them all that they would not know all the answers but we would get an idea if we are covering the general concepts. The younger two are still diligently at theirs but she turned hers in saying she cannot do them. I am not trying to discourage her, but to get her to see that just attending school does not get her a diploma and just wanting to pass the GED will not do it. She will have to put in the work. She currently believes if she attends public school for a year, she will be allowed to graduate with a diploma.

so, I am on my computer and I open my ipad to check the radar weather for you all, knowing that when the computer is online, the ipad is online. As I open it up, I hear dinging across the room as messages come in on my iphone. So now the messages are not coming on the ipad, but only on the phone. and it is only online when the ipad is online. Technology!!!

Heavy downpours most afternoons. I was going to school and the weight room yesterday, really, and as I thought of leaving, the skies opened up. So… I just kept reading my book. I did go for a walk later when it cleared up.
It is light here until 7 in the evening now.

Marc got home from his National Guard experience. I imagine he had a lot of fun but I was rather busy when he got here, so not much discussion. I try not to discuss much with him.

Still trying to figure out Jess’s bizarre behavior. She was supposed to return Amber’s car. She did not. She told my brother she would give him the key. She did not. He went to the parent’s house to see about it, and they had not seen her for three days. They had no idea where she was. We found out she had gone to Seattle a couple of weeks ago and borrowed money from Gerry so she could get gas to get back home. She told grandpa I had slid off the road in the snow so she had to come rescue me. I have not seen her in months other than the few minutes last time we were in Moscow.
She now says she is quitting the classes she has been taking so she can be at home more. And she has been renting a place in Pullman for two years with a couple of other girls. And she has not smoked weed in five months because of her job And so on. I think she has emotionally and physically moved out, her mind just needs to catch up with it and we need to find a replacement. She has done them a huge service but she thinks that means we ought to keep her on even though she is no longer doing the service.

Met with a parent today whose child is just too young for kinder. Oh, well, I tried. She will be the youngest in her class. Needs time to grow up. Now I again rest in the truth that God gave the child to the parents, not to me. It is their decision.

The Boy was really too young to start kindergarten when he did, as he was still four when the school year started. But his father was going to make a fuss if Nightingale didn’t put him in school, so she felt she had to. That was a tough time.
He did much better in his second year of kindergarten, and is doing well now in second grade. (He did well in first grade, too.)

I don’t think they should start until they are seven or eight and should be done by fourteen unless they want to do more and have a propensity toward it.

It was a good meeting. They are translators and may be in the village when school begins. We talked about how long child needs to be here after school begins.

so.. this evening I just got my newsletter sent out. I had to redo all of my contact lists because they disappeared when they changed our email here. very tedious. I had to have chocolate to get it done.

They are doing makeup photos at school tomorrow. I am going to have mine done too. My last one was horrible as my hair was still too short from those rotten haircuts I got. I don’t want to be vain, but it was bad. I have four new students who will be getting photos.

As mentioned on the prayer thread, twenty two is a mess but she seems to be getting through the challenges of growing up. She thinks everybody is against her. We remind her that we are all adults too and don’t have to agree with her in everything to be for her.

I figure they are grown up when they can begin acknowledging responsibility for their own decisions. She went on the attack on her brother and sister (she is the oldest of the three) when she heard brothers and dad talking about the challenge. She was rather mean but they held their ground, I was proud of them. I have talked with them endlessly about enabling and how that does not help them or her. If she wants to make bad choices, no need to go down with her or they won’t be available to help her out when she is ready to change.

so tired. I was gratified when the preschool teacher stopped by after school..I had just finished finding new, easier books to photocopy for this class, as what was in the plans was too difficult for the majority of them. She said that she agreed that this was a low class and she had also struggled with them. That was so affirming. I also keep getting new students who don’t know any sight words.

The new readers are Open Court from 2002. I have the blackline masters. The 2008 readers are much harder. These are still decodable, just not so many words, so much easier. I got them all copied for the rest of this term and now Wendy will fold and staple.

Why get that all done today, you ask? Well two of the new girls are going to the village in a week and I have to have everything ready for the rest of the term for them to take. It also has to be entered in the plans and the term outline. My class has PE and library tomorrow afternoon so I should be able to get a lot done.

When they go off to the village, does that mean they are off in smaller communities, where they are with their parents? The parents are doing whatever missionary work and homeschooling their children so they take the schoolwork you prepare?

The village would usually be grass huts type of places, small communities, with a few tin roofs. My two girls earlier this year, their parents are translators. When they go to the village to work on translation, the mom homeschools using the materials that I send.
The two going out now are going to a much nicer village. They are families getting their field training and village living is part of that. For them I only send reading and math, though I may send some art for fun.

One of the siblings, a little boy, is in daycare all day. Daycare is under my classroom. I am so tired of listening to him cry, “I want mommy.” It hurts my heart.

I would think, difficult as it is to live in different cultures, living in the village as a family would be easier on the children.

We got daughter’s car back and left the truck for other daughter, along with a list of rules, designed to help her get her finances in order. I told her she was free to follow the rules or find other transportation.

Well, daughter in Moscow was not home when we delivered the pick up. She texted and asked what the expectations were. I told her they were on the paper with the key. And then I texted her a picture of the copy I kept, knowing her tendency to change history to fit her current state. She agreed it was a good plan. Of course, I will have no way of knowing if she takes the pickup outside of the immediate two town area. She put nearly seven thousand miles on the car she borrowed from her sister, in three months. She likes to travel, but she is not to the point where she can afford to do so and it does leave my dad shorthanded. She is rarely there to help grandma up in the morning. My dad assures me he is up to the task but grandma has to descend a flight of about twelve steps and he is quite shaky on his feet. That is where daughter is supposed to come in.

She really does not grasp that she cannot do it all. She cannot be in two or three or four places at once. I used to tell her that only God is omnipresent.

It is still in the works. Hopefully, it will be done by the fifteenth, though the seller hopes for earlier as she flies back to Norway before then.

And then we can consider how soon we want to move to the big city. If God wants us to do that, which, I will figure he does if the house comes through.

That will be such a big change for you all, if you do move. Those kinds of changes are daunting, and can be scary, but can be fun and exciting, too. But change is harder to deal with the older we get, don’t you find?

We have lived in a lot of big cities and have moved about fifteen times. If we down size well over the coming years, we should be fine. It will be different but God will be there as well so that is all that really matters. It will be fun to be near daughter and a couple grands.

Goats and sheep sell rather easily around here. They will probably go to the eating market. If Moses is still around, I will just mention it to him an his connections in Moscow should take care of the issue.

Marc turning eighteen will impact us psychologically but not so much materially. Did I mention the picture we found drawn on his wall the other day? It had my name on it and it was not nice. Seemed to be some sort of phallic symbol. Not sad to see him move along, but I do think we have had an impact on him. Not as much as we had hoped. He may or may not know the Lord. He definitely does not know how to live in a family, but he has witnessed it so the thought may grow. He seems to have a good enough work ethic, all sorts of folk want to hire him. As long as he stays long enough to finish the job.
Tina is not currently planning to move out. A lot of her acting out in the past seems to be connected with fear of moving out. Something she had been insisting on doing, probably because she has watched seven others move out. But a lot of younger year school books can go. And we will probably get rid of a lot of stored for others items. They have been gone for four years for many of them, two for the last. Time to either take their stuff or forget about it.
Lots of camping gear can go, gardening things, that sort of thing. And then we will be down to a small Uhaul.

Starting to slip off the page again. It is cold here. But the sun is up and it should get up into the twenties by afternoon. Then it will be chore time again and we will head out again. The animals don’t seem to be much bothered by it, they are not hiding in their warm houses but are out basking in the sunshine on the snow.

Apparently the tornado thing was short-lived and not quite in our area–but they’re warning of hail where the tornado was . . .

So, of course, I paid for dinner tonight. You only turn 70 once. But my friends brought cards and two brought gifts. I gave them small flashlights with an extra battery. one of them said they had just been needing one. God does it.

My aide brought me a whole bag of garden produce from her garden. I know this feeds her family, so I was grateful. She has never done that before. But I had just gone to market this morning, so did not need anything. I asked at lunch and my friend had not made it to market and needed it all. Let your gift supply anothers need. I love that I get to be a part of that.

So the same friend was talking to me at lunch yesterday and asking me if I ever wore jewelry, like bracelets, etc. I said that I didn’t usually. But I have one necklace I like. She was wearing one like it in beautiful shades of blue. and I commented how nice it was. See here, at school, I always wear my key on a lanyard, just one key. The one key opens everything at school so it is silly to also wear a necklace.
Well, you guessed it, when I opened her gift, there was the necklace.

Downsizing. I have lots of stuff given to me by children, as you might suspect. What to do with it all. I appreciate the giving and thoughtfulness but really have no need for that much stuff. One child decided I liked elephant so I have about twenty of them in varying materials. And bells. And artwork. And and and….I try to keep it prominently displayed for a while and then inobtrusively move them to storage but how to get them out of storage….

I know what you mean, Mumsee. When children give you things, you have to be very careful what you do with them. I only throw them away if the trash will be taken out before class the next day.

you see, we have had so much rain that you can’t even step on the grass. just solid mud, especially at school where we get all the rain flowing down the hill. I have been staying on the sidewalks.
It has been raining every day, lots of rain. So going more than a day without is only a result of God’s goodness.

He is good. Tina turned her life over to God yesterday. I asked her what that meant, She said she told HIm she was sorry for her sins and thanked Him for dying for her.
She also told me that she had decided not to be a Catholic. Some lady told her that she would have to do some things before being allowed to go to confession. She prefers the more direct route.

A nice warm day here, but I had some big drifts to work through again this morning. The wind has stopped, or at least returned to our gentle breeze. Another storm expected though.

How is the basketball court area these days? More hollowed out underneath with all the rain?

They dug out a hole about 20 by 10 feet. Then they found that they did not know where the water going into the cement drain was going. So they dug to the bottom of that. Now they have a deep ditch going next to the court and on down the hill. I expect they will be putting some culverts into the ditch. Mounds of dirt and rocks covering 1/3 of the basketball court.

yes, it is roped off and there are workers there, so they stay out. I just put some photos on facebook. my walk home yesterday told me that I needed to do more walking. I suppose I should head to the weight room. Knowing where the camera is makes it much harder to go.

Daughter lives in a nice but not over nice residential area. No rules and regulations but everybody keeps their yard presentable. Very close houses. Off a couple of busy roads but protected by smaller roads.

Several times I have pointed out nursing opportunities for her in this area, we do have hospitals and clinics around. But her husband’s family is right there and they like their home and have no desire to move.

And yes we are fine staying here. I planted grapevines so when I get old I can drink wine. If I move, I guess I won’t be able to drink wine.

Daughter in Okinawa has been contacting me. Seems having a baby can be work. Babies apparently don’t just lie there while you do your thing.

Not only is she a full time US Navy person, she decided to do another semester of college this spring. With a fussy baby born in January. Things are not going as she envisioned.

I do not have any idea what she has but she has said she gets a sore back and abs from carrying him around.

My thought for this daughter is that she never really bonded with the bio mom. Remember she is barely a year younger than her sister and less than a year older than her brother. That makes for a rather busy mom.

I don’t know if what I just typed after the 5:35 will show up. We have tried to compensate with her in the years since, and we had foster children which I hoped she would learn from watching how I interacted with the babies.

Apparently not. I was saying that we were concerned that she did not actually bond with her bio mom. She was barely a year younger than her sister and less than a year older than her brother. Which makes for a busy mom and little time for bonding.

Well, there it is. Anyway, we try to encourage her and I think it helped that she was around when oldest daughter had hers and saw them working on bonding. And she had a good visit with the mom in law, so hopefully she learned some things there as well.

I just got a call from her older sister, the one staying with my dad. She thinks she is ready to move on in life but hesitates to do so as she does not want to leave the older folk in a difficult spot. She also has been fired from yet another job, or let go due to downsizing. And oh, by the way, the truck we let her borrow is faltering. And so it goes….

You know, when you mention that. I think of what a loner I am. I am not close to any of my siblings. I have a sister a little more than two years older than me, but found out later that my mom had a child stillborn between us. Then my brother, the only boy, is ten months younger than I am and he needed help when he was born. Then another sister a year after him.

What kind of advice can you give in that spot? or just listen while she figures it out??

We try to remind her to look in his eyes, make eye contact. Not creepily, but regularly. And to pick him up if he wants to be held. He does not have to be wet or hungry to need being with mom or dad. We do wait until she asks, and she has.

People who were raised without bonding aren’t destroyed. But they may benefit from some ideas. They tend to need to make a conscientious effort until it becomes natural. But if they don’t know what the effort might be toward, it is hard to keep the cycle from continuing.

Some people can pick it up naturally, by observation or happening upon it and they get a zap of that life they have been missing and want to continue it. Others may well go through life not quite knowing what is missing, not mistreating people but missing out on the benefits. And others become things like sociopaths, like a couple of my sons and a couple of my daughters. Not that they are psychopaths, with a desire to hurt people, but they go through life using people.

I just said a prayer for your daughter to have a loving and nurturing heart for her baby. The thought that the little baby may not be getting the attention and nurture he needs made me cry.

Yes, she got married last spring and hopes to have a wedding this coming November. I am not big on that but it seems to be a growing thing.

She married a young man who was raised Catholic. His mom died when he was young, his dad remarried and then his dad died so his step mom is his one remaining relative until marrying our daughter. I think husband met him once. Anyway, the step mom in law was very opposed to her at first, saying she got pregnant to trap her step son but they had a good visit and things are going well. Even though daughter is not Catholic. We will see how that all pans out.

Jo, that sounds like your mom really did have her hands full.
There were three of us in 38 months, but Mom was an older mom (45 when she had the last of those three) and already had four children and teens. When I imagine being nine months pregnant in Phoenix in August, 45 years and 3 months old, and with a child nearly two and another barely three (plus four boys 10 to 17), I can hardly comprehend it. got notice this morning that my renters are moving on. Of course that will be expensive for me. But, God knew, yesterday I got an email telling me the missions committee is giving me some extra for car repairs.

and last week I got a letter from a sweet lady in her 90’s that she is having to lower her support, but the day before someone emailed me that they are raising their support. There is such a peace in knowing that God is caring for my needs. I don’t know what I need, but He does.

fun times taking my class for ice cream. It was so nice being able to use the large van. I may do that again. We even had time to play on the playground next to the store. I didn’t realize that it was such a fun place and we had it to ourselves. Even Wendy looked like she was in a game of tag.

Well, Tina seems to be slipping again. Sad to see. I have Melody writing a research paper so Tina wants to write a paper. Tina has been writing papers on what she has been reading. Neither husband nor I could figure out what she was talking about. She kept saying she wanted to write a paper but did not know how. And she wants to write about Alexander the Great. She has written several papers on him.
I asked if she wants to write a research paper but she said no, she has had this idea for months, to write a paper.
Okay, then, write one.
I don’t know how.
But you have been writing them for months.
I know but I don’t know how.
Look at the grammar book and decide what kind of paper you want to write.

so it seems that I am so sensitive to chemicals that those leaching into filtered water from a very cheap plastic water bottle cause me to get sick. Of course the bottle had been sitting for weeks. Not my best middle of the night decision to drink that water.

I find I am quite sensitive too all sorts of things, husband thinks I am looney. Store bought bread is no longer in my eating, but I have been eating the stuff I make with the sour dough starter I make with wild yeast. I wonder if the store bought yeast is not so good. My hands have not been this healthy in twenty years.

Vehicle still not up and running. I am feeling bad for the mechanic as I know he did all that he could. He said he hoped that I would have it today. oh, well…
I am truly grateful for the van that I have been using. We had a lot of afternoon rain, and I mean something more than a sprinkle. I wasn’t sure that I even wanted to leave the weight room, judging by what I was hearing on the tin roof.

Though I will never forget the cockroach stuck in my speedometer in Okinawa. It was just there. And the rains came down and the car steamed with humidity, and there was the poor roach, trapped. Though I am certain it left lots of its progeny to carry on.

oh, roaches, yes I detest them. I thought I had some here, but turns out that they were just innocent luna beetles. I wondered why they didn’t move very fast.

I am finishing up lots of things this week with my class. I copied things for a book on animals and we will finish it. I am realizing that the materials are not that good. They give brief bits of information but don’t really teach anything. We will finish it, but not sure how much of it I will use next year.

I have been cleaning out the school area behind the dining room. Sorting and resorting and even tossing. Downsizing. Trying to put the books to use. Trying to reinvigorate students with fresh enthusiasm, as only new to them books can do.

I was supposed to have two friends over tonight to begin a Bible study, but we decided to postpone as one gal has to go to Cairns next week for a medical check and is very busy. I got busy on the study last night. Wow, it felt so good to really do a study. This one is on Nehemiah. It is a serious study and they have you going back to the beginning when God gave the promises and the warnings. We also looked at the hope portrayed in Jeremiah. I am excited to actually begin meeting together.

I have been riding the bike, well, sitting on the bike and pedaling this week. Sis in law put out the whole 30 challenge again (I lost twenty plus pounds on that and was never hungry, but gained most of it back) but this time she added fifty miles a week on the bike. I am taking it slow. Thirty miles in three days. Trying to keep the blood pressure down with something other than garlic. Though that is the quick and easy way.

A beautiful day in the neighborhood, here. About twenty out this morning but a warming trend is forecast. Nothing but sunshine for the next week. Though it should be below freezing at night so my morning chores will be a snap.

No big storm here, at least not today. Tomorrow we may get a thunderstorm! (I love thunderstorms.) It is up in the lower 50s today, and expected to be in the upper 50s tomorrow, but then the temps will dip down to the upper 30s and lower 40s. Not bad, though, compared to how frigid it was at times this winter.
When he got home from school, The Boy changed into a short-sleeved shirt and shorts. It was 51 degrees outside, which is warm to us this time of year. 😀

We’ve had quite a bit of rain, but it’s warm enough to feel like we’re close to spring, and the trees look like they are on the verge of letting loose. But I have yet to see a green leaf or a blossom, so I can’t yet declare it spring–it has felt like it is nearly spring for about three weeks, though, and I think we really are on the verge of it now.

We have had so much rain here that your steps squelch when you walk. My aide said that her garden is not doing too well and her roof is leaking.
We have had heavy rain every afternoon. My class comes inside with their legs covered in mud. and then some have to change clothes. I don’t even set foot on the grass at school.

I went to the weight room this afternoon. Sure enough it was raining when I was done. Not a torrential rain though. I had done weight lifting and close to two miles on the machine and I was tired. A van went by me and slowed and offered me a ride. Turns out it was the singles van and she was returning it to my house. Isn’t God good? I was so tired.

Yes, there is a check box to the left of the post comment oval that says you can have the comments sent to your email. I have never checked it. But then, I am not certain I actually exist as I have to write in my name every time now.

No word back from the woman who was going to give a response yesterday as to whether or not she wanted the job. I guess we move forward.

Now we have heard from her, she is in. They will meet on Thursday for more discussion on mutual expectations. I guess we should have prayed for a quick fix, not just for the items to arrive in two weeks!

Kizzie, I trust that you are keeping a few things of hubby’s? Even a coat that you can put on when you are cold and missing him. Or a few favorite shirts. Don’t get rid of everything. You are going to enjoy arranging things once those closets are empty.
