  5. A fine time was had by all. Until seventeen year old pulled out the device he is not supposed to have and started playing on it. Then we packed up and came home but I did not mention to him that was the reason. He, of course, was not the only one as two other little boys had theirs out as well. I think they are sixteen and eighteen.

  9. went to the store sale not planning on buying anything, but, of course, I did. Mostly I got things for the birthday box in my classroom. Lots of little balls. Finally decided to give one to each of my students for Christmas. Also got a few gifts for my aide.

  12. It has also been wonderful to listen to Tony read the I Survived series. He thoroughly enjoys them and gets a lot out of them. But he can still only read each word if I am there to guide his eyes and slow him down.

  14. I really could not sing, but the gal next to me was right on, so that helped. In a few parts I did well, but it is such delightful music. To sing scripture and to listen to the other parts.

  15. My nose has been feeling rough for a year. Not smooth skin, but more like it is peeling. I am actually thinking of going in to have it checked. Several friends have had to have spots removed from their noses.

  28. Thanks, my youngest invited me for Christmas morning. Her mother in law will also be there. This gal is so far on the extrovert scale I just sit in silence and watch. I met her in Colorado at my other daughter’s home and she hardly spoke to me she was so busy talking to my grands.

  34. hmmm…. now this evening, I am experiencing arthritis. My left wrist is so painful and weak that I can barely use it. I decided to take more fish oil tonight.

  37. My daughter’s mom in law is kind of like that. She used to be a clown, so enjoys interacting with people but in a childish voice. I think she is wonderful and enjoy watching her interact. Her husband sits back and watches as well.

  41. The arthritis is better. just that one really bad evening. I am taking more fish oil and paying attention to how I use my hands. I did use advil one morning, but only when necessary. Hadn’t thought of bengay.

  42. I went to the choir concert last night. I wasn’t too impressed so plan on skipping the band concert tonight. Lots of solo acts. Even three solo or duet songs from Les Mis acted out. Then there was the three guys singing in front of four judges, played by teachers as they sang the teachers got more into it and got out their instruments. Rather silly, really.
    The intermediate choir was great.

  43. hmmm…. somehow I sense we might have reached another 49??
    God was good last night. I am getting rather strained with going to things alone and wondering who to sit with. But I sat next to one of my students who was with grandparents and then other friends sat right behind me and even invited me to sit with them. Blessed…
    at times I wonder how much longer I can stay, though school is going well.

    I have a little devotional perched on my table that I read each morning at breakfast, by Elizabeth Elliott. For Dec 1st it said: God wants perseverance. He wants faithfulness, loyalty and the willingness to stick with the job that He has given us.

  47. Friends even invited me to lunch today. Nice time together. I am actually supporting them. I received a very special thank you note from them this week, too. They don’t know it, but I am planning on upping my support of them. I have been supporting someone else here this year. I have not gotten one word of thanks or even friendly hellos. I will complete this year of support and then shift it over to this other couple, whom I am sure have needs.

  48. That is true and I would definitely go with that. Imagine if I said I was tired of doing what I am doing, guess I will put these folk back in foster care.

    But, though the work is exhausting, I am not that kind of tired of it. I guess I was meaning more when God removes the desire to do the work, not when our physicalness gets tired. But that is a difficult thing to discern.

  49. It is difficult to determine who to support, again, it comes down to what does God want more than what do I want. He knows where He wants His assets. And He is pretty good at getting them there, sometimes despite us.

  50. Long ago I discontinued monetarily supporting anything. I was more than happy to give away everything and husband did not appreciate it. But he is quite generous himself. But I can pray for you and others and do. I keep various missionaries cards in my Bible marking my reading and pray for them each day as well as my children . I suspect some would prefer the cold hard cash but that is not my area at this time.

  51. We are not tired of living here and don’t anticipate ever being tired of doing so. But we both think we are being directed toward Boise. Neither of us want to live in Boise. We do want what God wants and will go if He wants us to and we understand it is Him wanting it and not just us overplanning or something.

  52. Mumsee – Someday it may become crystal clear about why God wants you in Boise. (Then again, you may never know on this side of eternity.)

    I’ve seen God make sense of things in the past, but never more so than since Hubby’s death. There have been things that we had done, decisions that were made, the timing of certain things, that point to God preparing the way before me for my widowhood. Praise Him from whom all blessings flow!

  53. Mumsee, I expected I would likely stay in Nashville the rest of my life. I was there just eight years, though I see how important those eight years were (my sister-in-law died, but I got a chance to get to know her well, and also her children, and to invest heavily in my sister’s children in those eight years before their own dad died less than two years after I married and moved away). I see lots of ways each big portion of my life has prepared me for the next.

    Actually, I could have happily stayed in Phoenix, too, but I needed to go to college to prepare to edit, and I couldn’t go to college for that or edit there, and it never made sense to move back. I hope God allows me to live the rest of my life here, and for my husband and I to have many sweet years together here. This church is where I want to stay, and this community. But the reality is we will never be truly “home” on this earth, and I trust Him with the details.

  57. I am quite comfortable in my life here and quite comfortable with the idea of just growing as old as I am going to and then being done with this place and off to Home. And we like our church very much and enjoy the people. As my children get older, I may even start getting more involved again.

    But, on the other hand, we can see us being helpful to daughter and family as they both work so both small folk are in day care. Perhaps we could save them the money of day care so they could get their bills down to where just his job would suffice and she could stay home.

  58. okay, I mentioned to someone today that I forgot my yard duty and felt so bad. She said, ‘don’t you remember, I did your yard duty because you did mine last week.” Nope, I didn’t remember, but thank you Lord that You took care of even my forgetfulness.

  61. We have been out catching roosters. We have too many and need to butcher about twenty of them, but until that happens, they are free ranging. When we find too many in the chicken runs, we send them packing.

  62. Well, no eggs out there this morning. I had the roosters on video eating the eggs and last night I turned off the light in the chicken house. Perhaps we will get some eggs this morning.

  66. actually I need to do laundry. I finally went to the construction department and bought tokens to use the laundry room. I have a great new washer, but need a dryer. Most of my tops are t-shirt material which is all wrinkly when you don’t have a dryer. I may rewash some things just to fluff the wrinkles out.

  69. I used to usually do laundry on Tuesdays and Fridays in the warmer months, and then three days a week in the winter months (because Hubby wore lots of layers in the cold weather). Now I do my laundry once a week, usually on Thursdays, but I often help finish up Nightingale’s and The Boy’s laundry on other days.

  70. Laundry is pretty much an every-day thing here, because of our outdoor wood boiler / water heater / whatever-else situation. My husband sort of explained the system to me, but stuff like that is in-one-ear-out-the-other the first 50 times I hear it. His takeaway for me: do a little laundry each or most days, rather than a whole bunch on one or two days of the week, because it’s better for the system.

  71. I do one or two loads on Tuesday. Eleven year old does one on Monday as does twelve year old. Seventeen year old daughter does one on Wednesday and husband or I do one or two for seventeen year old son on Friday. So we actually do spread it out.

  72. I do laundry as needed. My husband has always washed reds separate and towels separate, so I do the same. Reds get washed about once a month, towels about once a week, whites about once a week, and darks about every five days. Sometimes I subdivide further than lights and darks. Usually I do two or three loads when I wash, leaving 45 minutes or so between loads, and wash whatever needs it.

    When we first married, my husband would wash laundry if he saw it needed it, since that had been his own job so many years (the girls had done their own for a few years when we married, but that still left the towels–and that meant two or three loads a week when the girls were home–and his clothes). I always considered it my job to wash the laundry, though, leaving him to fold his own clothes and the towels. (The towels had a really complicated system–these are rags, these go in the girls’ bathroom, these get folded this way . . . and I gave up trying to learn it after a couple of months.) If I ask him to transfer them to the dryer when they’re finished so I can take a nap and not have to wait for them to finish, or anything of that sort, he’s more than willing, but otherwise I consider it my job.

  74. I include my towels in my regular laundry. I don’t separate colors, either, although I used to have a load of whites and light-colored items I would do as a load with bleach once a week, but that was when Hubby wore white underwear and t-shirts. For the last several years of his life, he wore colored underwear and t-shirts.

  75. We do more, what is going to hang up from the dryer and what is going to be folded. We have gone from a white bleached load as well. Reds are a concern but mostly we don’t have a lot of them. At least not new enough to matter.

  76. Tina, the seventeen year old, was talking with me yesterday about clothing. She likes to buy hers from the thrift stores. Her driver was telling her that she does not like the modern styles and does not try a lot of them on. I explained to daughter that I have not tried anything on in years because all of my clothes have come from other people moving their stuff along. They used to give us bags and bags of retired clothing, the children would go through and take what appealed to them and usually all of it would be claimed. One load came of lots of sweatshirts and polo shirts, just my size. I have not purchased clothing other than a dress for a wedding I did not attend, in many years, So none of them bleed anymore.

  77. Mumsee, I don’t “understand” why towels would get separate treatment, either, unless it is because they might take longer to dry. But they also can sit in the washer or the dryer for a while (if we’re going to the store 45 minutes from now and I don’t have time both to wash and dry a load, or if I have time to wash clothes but my husband doesn’t have energy to fold them and they need to sit in the dryer a day or two), and it’s his habit to do them separate, so it’s easy enough to do that.

  78. I have known several people who do towels separately but never thought to ask. It would make sense that they are the same weight generally, so take time to dry. And they can put lint on other things. But to me, it is easier to have each person do their own.

    One reason we do that, I suspect, is because people would get a fresh towel every day and I am not in that camp. You wash your hands, they should be clean before you put them on the towel. But we had children who could easily have gone through twenty towels in a week if they were not kept to two or three.

I had no idea of the specifics of the girls’ shower habits (though I know they had old, thin towels they kept just for drying hair), but I know I washed an extraordinary number of them when they were living at home. I sometimes washed two full loads of towels (which includes wash cloths, hand towels, and rags), only to find several more pieces in the “towel” basket the very next day.

  83. I had a friend who “confessed” to me that she made her husband (and herself) use a towel for two showers before washing them. I didn’t admit that we used towels for a few showers before washing them.

    In my parents’ home, we all shared one or two towels, so I often was drying off with a damp towel. Hubby and I had separate towels for each of us and each of the girls.

  85. Guess I should not mention that I have one thin old towel for my daily shower. It sometimes gets washed on Tuesday, sometimes not until the next Tuesday. I am clean out of the shower, It just takes the water and dries. I am fine with that. I am not more sickly than most nor more smelly.

  90. In Colorado, daughter is hving a party on Saturday clled gifts for the king. where they invite friends and each gives a gift of something they have created. I hear granddaughters are practicing music. I think thata I will sing a couple of songs I do with my class. when she told me about this last year, I remember thinking that I would love to attend.

  91. Mumsee, when I lived in Phoenix, I think we pretty much used towels indefinitely. Actually I didn’t wash them, Mom did (washing laundry was her one consistent household chore, though we never had a dryer and we kids frequently hung stuff on the line), and I don’t know how often she washed them. But things dried quickly in Phoenix. If you live in an area where towels atay damp 24 hours at a time, it definitely affects how often you need to wash them. Nashville wasn’t as bad as some area in the South, but I didn’t have a bathroom fan and mildew was a little bit of an issue in the bathroom, and towels didn’t dry as quickly as I was used to. Towels and washcloths would begin to smell if not changed fairly frequently. I think I could get two uses from a washcloth and maybe three from a towel, but definitely couldn’t go a couple of weeks.

  103. Company coming in an hour, for Christmas Eve dinner. We just invited them this morning, some new folk in church. Moved down to retire to a warmer less isolated area from Alaska. Funny how our children think we are too cold and isolated here.

  116. I had the children patch a hole in the chicken coop yesterday. Too many blackbirds were making themselves at home in there. Eating all the chicken food. I feed the blackbirds in an outside feeder. I looked at their work this morning. Apparently a couple of them on the autism spectrum, were bored. They tore more holes in the wall. I had them patch that this afternoon.

  120. After my shopping adventure yesterday, I stopped by to give Lucy her new clothes. Her husbands family is visiting and they were all staying in a rental home. She fed me some delicious chicken pot pie. It tasted great. However I forgot about the possibility of onions. Must not have been too many, because I didn’t get sick until later. Don’t tell her.

  136. Pretty good so far. Flyboy had his first shift at his new job today. Tomorrow he has his last shift at his old job. The people at the old place were good for him. I hope the same is true for the new. It’s a step up for him. He’ll be working more hours while continuing full-time in school so he’ll have to be careful not to get distracted and waste time.

Kizzie said you at least had to make it to 1500. After that there’s no more talk of the end coming. 6 even posted statistics on who has opened and closed the most rooms.

  144. Mu Flyboy continues to struggle. He stopped his lessons here as the instructor always had a last minute change of plans and he could not solo. So he took lessons down in Pocatello. Same thing. It sounds suspiciously like the instructors do not think he should fly solo. May just be our interpretation and we have not mentioned that to him. But the one in Pocatello used up all his flight money for now. He will keep at it. I suspect it would help if he would learn to budget both his time and his money. Someday.

  148. You’re right, it was chaos. My son parked in the parking garage, leaving his in laws in the van to enjoy the view of flights coming and going. Even walking into the terminal the boys were being wild, going back and forth. I was actually worried that they would knock me over or someone else.

  150. Then the adults, not me, decided to show the kids the first three Star wars movies, I guess that would be 4, 5, and 6. At one point the girl was screaming tht she was so scared. The kids in the house were 3, 4, 5, 7, and 9. Way too scary for them. I ended up going up to my room and reading.

  152. I wonder if you deal with some of the same stuff as us. Mike suggested our bio children, though they love us and appreciate what we do, felt somewhat abandoned. (Not that grown children who have moved on have been abandoned, but because we chose to fill our time with productivity, they have not had us as normal grandparents in their minds) Of course, other grandparents go on with careers and vacations and such, but in our case, we are dedicating our time and effort to other people’s children. Our bios have mostly expressed delight with us but some bitterness has crept in that they have confided. I feel sad that they almost never visit (it has been over five years for some) while when they were children, we took them to visit grandparents wherever we were in the world, almost every year at quite an inconvenience to us but well worth doing.

  157. Whether we stay here or move, I would like to down size. Down sizing animals would help a lot. Just keeping the productive animals. Mostly roosters, which I get the enjoyment of watching them and listening to them and having them greet me in the morning, but they could go.

    This afternoon, The Boy introduced me to Monkey Ball games on the Wii. I am really bad at the various games, but it was kind of fun, and he enjoyed playing with me.

  176. A mom is having her sixth child, all five and under, and wants school stuff before they leave. Which means have it ready by Monday. They will have the baby in PNG.
    Not yet sure what we are doing for science.
    Health would certainly help.

  177. Hi, all. I seem to be perpetually behind here, but I’m still ticking. Homeschooling and business (you should have seen the flurry of emails I got early this week about district auditions chairmanship matters) have been keeping me busy.

    Six children five and under for that mom? Whew. My sixth arrived when my other kids were seventeen and under. A little bit of a difference there. 😉

      my heart was sad listening to a little boy in day care who just wanted his mommy. they have only been in the country a week and the folks are in the training class.

  188. I had to go pick up seventeen year old from school. He has a one hundred three plus fever going. Mike may head out early for his cruise. He does not need to be exposed to this and his ninety two year old dad does not need it. Though I suspect others will expose him to it on a cruise.

  192. I feel badly for my grands in day care but that is the choice the parents made. Daughter never anticipated ever doing that, she was going to be a stay at home mom, but that is not how it works for her.

  195. Hey, would you look at that? The floor just opened up beneath my feet and I fell, and here I am in a new room. It’s kinda dark, though, so I hope someone comes along soon who knows where the light switch is! (That fall took the wind out of me, so I’m going to lie here for a bit in the meantime, and hope nothing is broken.)

  199. Cheryl, Mike goes on cruises because it is a good opportunity to spend time with his family. His dad is ninety two so we try to make sure he gets a couple good visits each year. He lives in Florida. His sister goes with him and she usually pays for his flights and hotel. Cruises are not very expensive, they get your money through ship board activities and such. Otherwise, it is a cheap hotel with lots of changing views and good food.

    I do not go because I have obligations here and because I get sea sick. And motion sick when traveling. And because they play a lot of cards and yell a lot. Not mad yell, just that they speak very loudly and argue a lot. They are German but could be Italian. I am not going to leave four children home alone while I go cruising just so you can read about me in the paper. And nobody has volunteered to take them other than the neighbor who has since moved.

    Mumsee, I didn’t expect you to be able to go, but not understanding that Mike was going with his family, I was puzzled. My husband wouldn’t enjoy a cruise without me . . . though I can imagine that if someone in my family would pay for me to go on a cruise, and my husband didn’t want to go himself, he’d send me with his blessing. So that makes sense.
