I was so tired last night. It was hot in Goroka, at least hot for here. There is one store over a mile away that we walked to in the hot sun. When we got back, I was done so waited in the restaurant for the others. We had plenty of time, so I went back to another store later. but we walked over four miles just on a shopping trip.

I got three new bilums. One, very bright. one brown and purple, and one very muted gray, blue and black. Not sure who they are for, but the grands always like them.

I was going to get some pizza for the pilot and then he gave me some money and asked me to get one. I got a larger one and it was sweet to bless them. He looked very tired. and had a very long day of flying.

I looked at the real menu for lunch. I ordered to go a white pizza, just white sauce, mozzeralla, sea salt and garlic. It looked so very plain that I almost gave it away. When I tried a cold piece later, it was absolutely delicious. The garlic and cheese went together so well.

Went to school for less than an hour today. Wendy and I have copied all of the readers and other papers for this term so I went through everything and set aside copies for the two girls going to the village. One girl for 7 weeks and one for 3 weeks. I am glad that both girls are good students and will do fine. They are both the oldest in their families so mom will have to have them do their school work while she is taking care of little ones. One gal is the oldest of five and one is on the way. That is a lot of work.

I was out watching the big owl that lives down in the willows this morning. You can hear the wings of a juncoe or a sparrow or a swallow, but not the wings of that very large owl. It is a great horned owl and they are big, but silent. God is amazing.

The children rode off to town yesterday, they wanted to go to the library and then to the fair. Always the library is first though.

They rode in last Monday but the library was closed. But they do love their books so it was worth it to them.

I cleaned out their rooms a while back, putting their stuff in large garbage bags and hauling them upstairs. Now that they have been able to keep their rooms clean for a while, I am letting them reclaim them. Invariably the five things the younger two choose are books and seventeen year old gets clothes. I am having them get rid of something with every five they bring down though No need to have so much stuff in your room you can’t find your floor.

We are gathering together old roofing material from under various sheds, so twelve year old can get up on the new horse shelter and put the roofing on. It is good for his confidence and connection to family to do things like that. Most of them have left their mark somewhere. A shed here, a hunting mansion there. The boys even put a second story on the feed shed one year. They still talk about it and how much they like carpentry now because they had those successes.

What a nice project to give to him. He will be able to see his progress as he goes. The library is also my favorite place. I am wondering if I dare let myself go to the high school library. I know they got new books and will have lots of things that I would like to read. I have a list of my favorite authors and that is what they would have. Nice to go to a library at a Christian school.

Almost done with writing thank yous. I try to write each one at least once a year. I only have four more and two of those are my daughters. I suppose I’d better get busy on my newsletter. God has given me most of it, I just need to put it together. I suppose that I could write it and then let it wait for a week or so. Sports Day is in a week and a half. I love to do a page of pictures from Sports Day. The kids are so proud of their ribbons.

We are enjoying a restful day here. On the fifth Sunday of a month, the local Baptist pastors rotate and take turns at different churches so we, the congregation, get to hear a different voice and they, the pastors, get to see how other churches are doing. Kind of fun. It is interesting to hear so many voices called to lead the flocks. I have never been disappointed.

I slept in until 6:30 this morning as school begins tomorrow. I waited to take my shower until this morning, but it is cold in here. I even closed the windows last night, but the floor does have cracks between the boards.

We seem to vary our influx of critters every year. One year it was crickets, another was stink bugs, then there were earwigs. It does not seem to repeat. Except the mice.

We have lots of limes on the lime tree this year and I think oranges on the orange tree. Or it could be lemons. How do you suppose I will know the difference?

Husband is thinking of taking a group of church folk to the Newsboys concert in November. He might even decide to take son and a couple of his friends. That would be interesting. Son would not like missing out on his video game time but too bad.

I actually facetimed my daughter this afternoon. Today is her birthday here, though it is tomorrow there. Figured I would not get her called on a school day, so this worked better. I even found out some things that she is doing, like beginning a youth group at her church.

Lizards are scaly things and they dry out. So probably it either fell apart after it dried or something ate part of it.

Yuck.
I have found mice without all their parts attached a couple or so times. There was that time sweet little Angel was batting a mouse’s head around the living room. When she tired of that. . .”crunch, crunch, crunch”. Gruesomely funny.
Another time, I think it was Rudy that tore apart a mouse. I found half of it on my way to the bathroom in the morning, and had to look for the other half.

Michael, one of the twenty one year olds, brought us a deer last night. He and the folks he is living with had all gotten a deer so they brought one here. We will enjoy it.

oh, they are successful here. However you do have to come get them yourself. We have one tree and lots of seedlings and we aren’t even eating them. I like mango better.

I finally had mango the other day, it was okay but I am not much of a fruit person. I like berries. And once in a while will eat a banana. I love apples and pears and peaches and nectarines and plums straight from the trees And cherries. And fresh pineapple is good. So I would probably like the mangoes fresh and pawpaw and papaya.

I love nearly all fruit. Not a fan of mango (though I love the mango chicken recipe), but I’m sure I could develop a taste for it. I’m neutral on apples and dislike pears (the only fruit I dislike). But I like canned pears.

Back to the winter time schedule. With Seventeen off her rocker, she is no longer doing chores so eleven year old picks up the slack. She is also doing twelve’s dog walking chores. Which shifts her watering and wood bringing chores to me It all works out.

I find myself doing some things that Hubby used to do, while Nightingale does a lot of things he used to do. Then again, she was already taking over those things – the yard work and the upkeep of the equipment used for it) – as she planned to one day own the house herself.

okay, I do have some chores, but the outside ones are all done by the yard meri, so no worries. Though, as it is not her place she does not see a lot that needs doing. Like doesn’t realize we don’t want all those pawpaw seedlings.

Eleven year old and I worked on the horse shelter roof yesterday. So we shoved plywood sheets up the ladder and onto the roof. Then I climbed the ladder onto the roof, lined them up and put some screws in to hold them in place. I was even able to make myself climb down the ladder again. Facing one’s fears is a good thing, right? I did think of the ladder on the roof picture while up there.

Wendy was sick yesterday. I miss her help. We will see what today holds for me in Kinder. We are supposed to sprout seeds. I bought some lima beans and soaked them for a bit. They sure look ready to sprout.

Mike can’t get up there and would be very unsafe with his limitations. Tina, no one knows what she might do up there. Tony was our best shot and he will help me finish. I am not ready to put Melody up there.
An adult in town who employs Marc and loans him money, and is getting frustrated with Marc’s dishonesty, has been telling Marc all summer to go home and work on the horse shelter. He was shocked to hear the other day when Mike told him, no, it has not happened.
But, really, as far as roofing projects go, this is a rather simple one and should be doable by me. It won’t be perfect or lovely but should keep the rain and snow off of our old mare. If only I had remembered that trick of going through the spaces rather than around! It is so much easier!

I remember having a bike with a broken pedal. Well, the plastic broke off, leaving only the metal center. It made it tricky to get started, and sometimes uncomfortable under my cheap sneakers, as I recall. But somehow I think you mean something else.

Well, he fixed it. He did not fix it the first time he tried, but I loaned him a bike pedal changing tool and he was able to get it done. He also helped me move a door I had gotten stuck, but not the door on the girl’s bathroom.

I have had fun this month buying her food items. Her home situation is not doing well and I knew that food always helps. She has four children at home. I told her that this is her birth month, which it is. yesterday I got her a case of a kind of biscuit and a humongous jar of peanut butter.

so I am thinking of walking to school today and carrying the food items. It is a problem here if others know that you are giving things to someone. She will have to carry things home one by one as whatever will fit in her bilum so others can’t see. I don’t want anyone to see me bringing the things to school.

sent out two emails with no response to try and get info on a washing machine. I wrote a check to put in my account here to pay for it. Then someone gave me almost the same amount. So I am good to go as soon as someone goes to find me one. Not something that I can do in country by myself.

Made my weekly stop at the post office and actually got some mail. An invitation and a truly lovely and unexpected thank you card. One of my parents was thanking me for how well I did the village program and catered it to her daughter. Which is great since I spent a lot of time on it. Also thanked me for all the food that I brought over for them when they returned from furlough, which was a special treat.

She is telling me all about how she is going to go to public school when she moves out at eighteen. I think that is an excellent idea.

We are trying to prepare her for that eventuality by having her buy her own groceries and fix her meals. But we aren’t there yet.

She was all excited about the idea, now she wants to know why we are making her buy her own food. And so it goes. We have not told her that she will be eligible for substantial assistance from the government when she moves out, more than she gets now. I don’t know the amount and I know it won’t seem like much once she is out, but I don’t know when or if we should tell her.

The idea of keeping that info from the girl for a while reminds me of when Hubby was a chef-manager. One of his employees tended to drink away much of his pay on a weekend. I think the man also had a mental challenge of some sort. So Hubby kept the man’s weekly Friday paycheck through the weekend, and paid him on Monday instead.
Later, he learned that that was probably illegal for him to do. But he had done it out of concern for the man.

We are thinking of becoming conservators at least financially for her. To make sure her bills get paid and she has spending money. I was just talking to husband about how we will be totally unable to protect her if she moves out. She will want and be able to get, a computer of some sort. She will gravitate toward: porn, Catholicism, witchcraft, and boyfriends. She will not be able to not give out her home address to anybody who asks. But, I am not sure I can grow old listening to her berate me day after day for not being nice to her. I explained that we have tried to be nice to her. We have offered to let her stay with us as long as we live, we have offered to build her an apartment of her own on our property, we have offered to set her up with one wing of the house, and now we are offering to help her get into an apartment in town. She says she is scared to move out so we are not nice. Hopefully, a visit to her psychiatrist will help. That is this Friday.

Mumsee, what a dilemma. Our friends run a ministry in Portland called Blanket Coverage. yes, they go out and cover the homeless with blankets, but it is more than that. When they are able to get them off the streets, they take care of all their needs. They give them a little spending money, but they pay their bills and rent, etc. Basically take care of their needs. It is not easy.

The psychiatrist appt was moved up to today so that will be nice. Daughter has been seeing things though she had not mentioned it to me earlier, and hearing voices though they don’t say anything clearly. I suspect the weight loss she has had after the rapid weight gain, has changed the amount of meds she needs.
She did show me that she had not been taking them. She had been saving them so she could poison me. I suspect she learned that from her “friends” at Provo Canyon Behavioral Hospital.
She also tells me that one of her drivers tells her she was a Catholic, then a Baptist, and is now a witch. She cherishes mother nature. Daughter wants to know if the woman may be lying to her. The driver says she has been saved by God and by satan.

The psychiatrist said there was something off. The counselor said there was something off. The OUI worker said there was something off. Turns out daughter was checking out movies and watching them on the device I gave her for listening to music. I had told her she was not to watch movies on it, only listen to music and audio tapes. Kind of a practice for the internet. She let me know she was not ready for the internet. Maybe she will stop looking so guilty. I had told her that if she wanted, she could choose one of the movies we have and watch it when she had permission We have a lot of movies as husband constantly buys them. We rarely watch them though so she has not seen most of them.

So glad that daughter had that appointment. That you are getting things documented. There needs to be a paper trail as who knows where this trail is leading. I am even glad that you are saying things on here as that also reveals the problems.

Time to get some sleep. I had such a cosy bed last night, but could not sleep. I was comfortable and used the time to pray for many. I am so glad that I flew to the meetings. The roads are bad.
Not sure that I truly understood what the presenters were talking about. Most didn’t apply to kinder, thought it did challenge me.

God was very sweet as several of their teachers remembered and appreciated me. Usually they come here and I had taken them to the school and shared my classroom and what I do. We meet here in the training centre which is the opposite side from our school.

This was New Tribes mission, though I heard that they have changed their name. We got to shop in their store and they had items that we don’t, so that was fun. I am very well stocked now. This will all last for a while. I am rather set in my habits so knew what to buy. I am like Mumsee and tend to eat the same things for a long time. Good, healthy food.

I decided to treat Tina as if she was completely starting over, though all of us involved in her treatments deemed there is still something not quite right with her. Let her do her own laundry, rabbit chores, play games with us, eat treats, etc, but she did not respond well. She crept into the kitchen to drink out of an old bottle of orange juice left on the counter for chicken food. And has been hiding movies from the library so I had to remove her birthday present of music player. That was about thirty minutes after both her worker and I told her not to watch movies that had not been pre approved. Ah well.

We received another weekly notice from the school principal, notifying us that Marc is neglecting his school assignments and achieving two F’s. I sent her an email letting her know there is nothing more we can do to get his attention but he leaves here at six thirty in the morning, arriving in town no later than seven which gives him an hour and fifteen for them if they want to tell him to show up then. And after school he does not arrive home until about eight twenty (his be home time is eight thirty) so they can use any of that time. I also pointed out that the only place he is expected to be is at football practice and they are welcome to tell him no, academics first. But this school is very focused on sports so if there is anyway they can manipulate their system to keep him playing they will. I pointed out that he has learned over the past three years that he need do nothing in class because the school personnel and time will be available to him after the end of the quarter and in three days, he has successfully pulled up his grades all twelve quarters, to be allowed to play according to their rules. She said the admin would discuss it and get back to me next week with a plan.

Another suggestion I offered was to cut his computer access as he continues to misuse their computer and his illegal device and any others he can access at school. We are leaving this in their hands and we will support them. When we tried to handle it, we quickly learned that the community was not supportive. Too many people want to feel good about helping, not realizing they were hindering,

Seventeen year old let one of the rabbits out last night. I had told her to go play by the swingset while we did chores, so I would know where she was. When I got back, she walked up from over by the rabbits with a big grin on her face.

Nope, but they are fairly tame so somebody will catch it one of these days. We have had them out all winter before, so it is not that big a deal, other than being told not to do so, so she did.

Just checked the packing number for my quilted wall hanging. It says they made a delivery attempt, but now it is being held at the PO. Which is great since my friends are in New Zealand visiting their son. I was concerned.

We put in another offer on a house in Boise. This one is right next to daughter and family. They say they are not moving so if we move there, they will be there. But I know stuff happens.

Speaking of shorthand, sort of, but vocally instead of in writing, just as in “Thanks, Six” you would only hear one /s/ sound pronounced, our choir director for our Reformation service tomorrow pointed out something similar at our last rehearsal. One of our songs is based on Psalm 46. When we sing the part of verse 1 that says, “God is our refuge…” he cautioned us against too much /r/ in that place with the two of them in a row: “…our refuge…” He rather humorously demonstrated how not to sing it, and sounded a bit like a lion rrrarrring at us. 🙂

Twenty one year old was supposed to come by yesterday so husband and he could go hunting up at step brother’s farm. Son and his buddy did not show up. He texted this morning saying they were butchering so would not be coming up. I don’t know if husband is sad or relieved.

I checked email at school yesterday morning and there were the bookings for my flights home and back again. Hooray! I sent my son an email on Sunday to say that this would be a good week to get the tickets. never sure when he will get to things. So very grateful to have my tickets. Since I was at school, I even went ahead and printed them.

I set a fire in the wood stove this morning. Getting toward mid November and we often just have the fire in the morning and let it go out. Just enough to take the chill off. Maybe this is the Lord’s answer to the prayer for enough firewood.

okay, after my sad day and trying to charge my ipad, I came home and googled the battery issue. Then I did what they said and pressed both buttons at the same time to reboot and kept pressing until the apple icon appeared. Now my ipad is back to normal. The weird part, it said it had 54% battery when it came on. So I did not drain the battery.

It is amazing how many things can go wrong with our electronic devices, and how many things go right. Definitely a plus, but not to be depended upon.

Were you able to figure out how to vote, Jo? I was thinking, that is another thing we will lose if we move to Boise. Voting will not be the simple thing it is, though we could do the advance voting and that is not so tough as standing in long lines.

But a lot of Californians have been priced out of the market down there and are moving to Boise, thus pricing us out of the market, not a bad thing.

Mumsee, we are in a town that is quite a bit bigger than the one we left, and we waited till election day to vote. We just waited till after those with normal work hours would be at work (we went about 9:00), and there was only a short line. I don’t think my husband waited for a booth at all once they’d checked off our names. I waited since the only booth open was one that was in full view of everyone coming up the line, but I didn’t wait long. And we only had a couple of people ahead of us where we showed ID and had our names checked off.

I could not easily find a fax machine so gave up on trying to vote. Also if you use that method your ballot is no longer private. not sure if I wanted my vote to be known.

At home having some quiet after the morning meetings. Our security chief spoke to us and showed a video. very interesting. I would not have thought of using a fire extinguisher as a weapon.

The military has voted absentee for many years, don’t they offer the same for missionaries? Seems like they were able to get the papers to us early enough to get sent back in plenty of time. Six weeks, as I recall.

The information on the election only arrived two weeks before the election. I could have faxed a ballot, but it is not private and I could not find a fax machine here in any department.

Well, we had flights on Friday, but no more flights to Port Moresby, the capital, until Nov. 26th. With APEC here we have shut down those flights and that is where we get our mail.

Definitely somewhere in between. Not ready, but we can see it in the future. We don’t want to wait too long but neither of us is interested in living in another city. It would make it easier on our children as we age to get it done in the next ten years I suppose. We had thought to buy it and rent it out for about seven or eight years, until youngest is grown, and then move, but then we would miss several good years of knowing our grandchildren better.

I am glad to have had Thanksgiving already. We don’t much do holidays, so it was nice to have extended family over close to the date and have a meal together, in thankfulness.

My fellowship group is having dinner together, so I will make my croissant rolls.
In the sign up list that went around, it bugged me that they said 20 people and then listed 9 couples, 1 single, 1 teen.
Somehow that felt bad to me. I know I’m single, just list the total people.

Not sure if I will get this done or not. A lady down the street started, this month, inviting ladies to her house to sew or craft on Friday afternoons. Today, being a holiday, she said you could come for the whole day. So, last night I actually opened the large container with my sewing things in it. I knew that I have some beautiful fabric. I discovered a skirt all cut out and ready to sew. I must have done that four years ago and totally forgot it.
It is not that beautiful, brown tones, but if the pattern works then I will use it for the other batik fabrics.

Did I ever mention that I felt guilty for not using my sewing machine? Finally last year I realized that I was too emotionally drained to have the energy to sew. I gave my self permission to not sew. This year has been better. So I finally opened the tub and am planning on getting out my machine. I told someone this and they couldn’t believe that sewing could be draining on my emotions. They also don’t know how depressing it was here.

I got a sewing machine for Christmas about forty years ago. It has seen some use but not much by me in the past ten years. The children used it, but we got them their own so they would not keep breaking mine. I hope to get it out again, eventually.

The guest room closet has been cleaned out finally, as we now have enough room to do so. The old treadle machine came out and maybe I will get a belt for it and put it to use. That is fun.

My bedroom closet is in great need of being cleaned out. I need to get those things – I don’t even know what they’re called – that are like short little dressers, with drawers, but are made of plastic. Those would help me organize the stuff that needs to stay in there.

I am planning to order a large dumpster and empty most stuff into it. It will save going to and from the dumpster or transfer station.

But we do have a lot of stuff to downsize. One does not go from a family of thirteen to a family of four overnight. Lots of school books, camping gear, etc.
