Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 14

Here are the games for the (Mostly) Rivalry Week:

 1. Arkansas @ #20 Missouri – This hasn’t yet become a rivalry, since Mizzou’s old Big 8/12 rivalry was Kansas.

2. Arizona State @ Arizona – Not only is this a big rivalry, but the winner just might play in the PAC-12 Championship.

3. Virginia @ Virginia Tech – State pride and avoiding a losing season are on the line for both of these 5-6 teams.

4. Michigan @ #6 Ohio State – This use to be an almost national championship. Whatever happened to Michigan?

5. #18 Georgia Tech @ #10 Georgia – Wasps and Dawgs. Stingers and fangs. One “Peach” of a game, no?

6. #7 Baylor vs. Texas Tech – Remember when the “Big Rivalry” game in the Lone Star State was Longhorns vs. Aggies? What happened to Texas?

7. #4 Mississippi State @ Ole Miss – Can Ole Miss salvage something from the last two weeks of defeat? Either way, this is a can’t “Miss” game.

8. Florida @ #3 Florida State – Another game that used to be important. I guess Florida could make the playoff selection interesting.

9. # 14 Auburn @ #1 Alabama – The Iron Bowl. ’Nuff said.

10. Tie Breaker: South Carolina @ #22 Clemson – Chas doesn’t like Tigers. I see why, since South Carolina has the potential to play 4 different Tigers in a season, what with 3 in the SEC and Clemson on the schedule. At any rate, don’t be a turkey, guess winner and the score.

The first game is Friday @ 2:30pm EST, so get those guesses in before that left-over turkey sandwich (mine will have mayonnaise and mustard) and that afternoon nap.

  3. Chas’s Wild Guesses:
    1. Arkansas. We need to stop the Tigers. I would like to see Georgia win the division.
    2. Arizona. I don’t know why.
    3. Virginia, My gut feeling that the Cavilears will do it.
    4. Buckeyes. Not that I care. I kinda don’t like them.
    5. Georgia. Go Dawgs
    6. Baylor. Is this still a Baptist school? I’m for them because, like the Gamecocks, they’ve “almost been there” lots of times, but never made it.
    7. Mississippi State.
    8. Florida. My mind says this will prevent my picture of the red car.
    9. Alabama. Beat them Tigers.
    10. South Carolina. 24-21 Don’t laugh. It depends on which defensive team shows up. If the defense plays like they did against Georgia and Florida, they can do it. If the team plays like they did against South Alabama, they won’t get out alive.

  5. Don’t worry, Peter, Texas will be back (and may even play A&M in a bowl game sooner than we think). Coach Strong is bringing back the character and discipline that will make a difference.

I don’t think Ole Miss lost twice in a row, but they have lost three of their last four.

    Mizzou
    AZ

  6. Chas- you chose Arizona because you know Wildcats are better than Sun Devils.

Tychicus: I don’t like Texas, so personally, I hope they continue their mediocre ways. I remember how the old Big 12 was all Texas, and before that the SWC was all Texas. I’ve had enough of Texas.

And before kbells comes on a corrects the rankings, I’ll do it. The rankings in the post are prior to Tuesday night’s playoff committee meeting, where they set the new rankings. Here are the corrected ones for this week:

    1 Alabama 10-1
    2 Oregon 10-1
    3 Florida State 11-0
    4 Mississippi State 10-1
    5 TCU 9-1
    6 Ohio State 10-1
    7 Baylor 9-1
    8 UCLA 9-2
    9 Georgia 9-2
    10 Michigan State 9-2
    11 Arizona 9-2
    12 Kansas State 8-2
    13 Arizona State 9-2
    14 Wisconsin 9-2
    15 Auburn 8-3
    16 Georgia Tech 9-2
    17 Missouri 9-2
    18 Minnesota 8-3
    19 Ole Miss 8-3
    20 Oklahoma 8-3
    21 Clemson 8-3
    22 Louisville 8-3
    23 Boise State 9-2
    24 Marshall 11-0
    25 Utah 7-4

If I had known Boise would make the list at #23, I might have added them to the choices.

  9. Mizzou won! Arizona won! And, even better, Stanford won! Now Arizona is going to play Oregon again, only this time for the PAC-12 Championship! And Mizzou plays in the SEC Championship. Okay, so few of you care. But some of you care who wins tomorrow’s Iron Bowl.

  10. That was true in the BCS era. But will it be different in the playoff era? Probably, since 2 of the current top 4 are SEC. So, what happens if (I’d say when if i could get away with it) Mizzou wins next week, will Mississippi State still be in the top 4? Or will the committee go with teams who play in a conference championship, thus avoiding what happened a couple of times in the BCS days. I’m thinking of the year Nebraska went to the championship game, even though they ended up third or fourth in the Big 12.

  11. Blame it on the holiday. I forgot to take home the thumb drive with my pigskin picks on it, and I was too lazy to figure it out. Anyway, after the delay, I have a winner. Congrats Tychicus! He got 9 out of ten games correct. he was the only one to predict the Ole Miss upset. His only miss was Georgia/GeoTech. Good job! Only three of us got the tie breaker winner correct, labeled as TB below. Here is how the rest of us did:

    9 correct: Tychicus TB 14
7 correct: Yours truly TB 7
    6 correct: AJ TB 8
    5 correct: Janice and kbells
4 correct: TRW, Chas and mumsee
    3 correct: Rickyweaver

And here are the scores so you can verify and correct me if needed.

    Missouri 21, Arkansas 14
    Arizona 42, Arizona State 35
    Virginia Tech 24, Virginia 20
    Ohio State 42, Michigan 28
Georgia Tech 30, Georgia 24 (OT)
    Baylor 48, Texas Tech 46
Ole Miss 31, Mississippi State 17
    Florida State 24, Florida 19
    Alabama 55, Auburn 44
    Clemson 35, South Carolina 17

So, players, do we want to wait until the bowl games to continue? There are only 14 games scheduled this week, including some conference championship games. Post your response on the daily thread. If only one or two say yes to this week, we’ll not do it.

Tychicus: If there is a contest this week, which game will be the tie breaker? See the schedule here.
