Morale at work seems to have hit a new low with the atmosphere in the newsroom edgy and even at times unpleasant in recent weeks. 😦 Everyone’s just under so much stress & pressure. We’re seriously understaffed, being pulled in all different directions by multiple layers of editors whose expectations & demands on us (regarding what stories — dailies or projects — we should be working on) conflict with one another.
It’s a case of too many chiefs/managers — and too few of us “Indians” at the bottom who have to carry it all out.
I’ve also been invited (or will be if I say the word) to a small gathering at a local restaurant to remember Jane, the very difficult woman I’d had you all praying for a few months ago. I was not close to her, in fact she pretty much made my life miserable for a short time a few years ago with her personal attacks on me (related to a story I was covering but also, I believe, to my Christian faith — she was extremely hostile to the things of God and let everyone know it).
The idea for the gathering I guess is to share stories about her — and I’m sure I can find a positive thing or two to share, perhaps sprinkled with a bit of the gospel message for others who may go? — but I haven’t responded to the offer of an invitation yet.
Thoughts? Prayers.
Just a very sad story, really. I believe members of her estranged family (a son she left behind years and years ago) are trying to organize it. … They don’t expect many, Jane was a very angry person and had a knack of alienating most people.
We recently attended a gathering similar to that, Donna. We do have a casual acquaintance with the woman’s son. Most people there seemed to be there for him. He was quite vocal about acknowledging the eccentricity/difficulty of his mother. At the same time, it was quite clear he loved her anyway. We were glad that we went. We didn’t have to say much and I think the son really appreciated those who took the time to come.
Thanks kathaleena. I told them to go ahead & send me an invitation, it’s a dinner a week from Saturday at one of the waterfront restaurants.
And after my post on low work morale, I got this very encouraging email today from one of our community leaders:
” … I want to thank you for all your hard and excellent work in observing, illuminating, and explaining our quirky community down here …. You are emblematic of the hardworking journalists nationwide still toiling effectively and honestly to help communities understand their corner of the world. Please keep up the good work. I believe as the world ‘shrinks’ and ‘expands’ simultaneously, the work of you and your colleagues is more important than ever.”
God provides encouragement just when we seem to need it.
Thanks to all who prayed for my dad. We were able to visit him today. He came home from the hospital yesterday. The roads have been bad. We drove in blizzard like conditions today, too. Started out ok. You never can tell how the roads may be between there and here. Lake effect snow is common, as is fog and ice.
He was well enough to argue with us. He also accompanied my husband outside to get some firewood. He was not going to let my husband help him at all with that, but finally gave in. It was sure nice to see him feeling as well as he did.
Long difficult day ahead. Prayers would be appreciated.

The guy who seemed so interested in buying Lee’s route has decided not to. 😦
Hoping the other guy who expressed interest comes through.
