Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks Week 2

It’s time again. This must be David vs. Goliath week in college football. Most of the top teams are playing the smaller Division 1 schools. You know, the ones who actually have a playoff at the end of the season? So, there were not a lot of the teams we all like playing big boys, so there is a little more variety for you. All three of the major military schools are in the contest this week. The tie breaker was chosen by last week’s winner, Ricky Weaver. He is from Texas, after all, so two Texas schools are it, even though one of them is Div. 1AA.

1. Buffalo @ Army (to please those who don’t like Navy)

2. Navy @ Temple (and of course we say GO NAVY!)

3. Air Force @ Wyoming (might as well include the flyboys)

4. #8 Michigan State @ #3 Oregon (B1G 10 vs. PAC 12-could be the game of the week!)

5. Michigan @ #17 Notre Dame (Can the Wolverines overcome Irish with “Touchdown Jesus” looking on?)

6. #15 USC @ #11 Stanford (Unless there’s another earthquake, this will be what’s shaking on the Left Coast.)

7. Colorado State @ Boise State (maybe mumsee can get this one)

8. East Carolina @ #9 South Carolina (An easy one for Chas’ Roosters?)

9. #18 Ole Miss @ Vanderbilt (The only SEC game that won’t be a blowout. Maybe.)

10. Tie Breaker: SMU @ North Texas (pick winner and final score)

    1. Army – because Buffalo rarely has a good team.
    2. Navy – GO NAVY!
    3. Air Force – Can’t say why.
    4. #3 Oregon – PAC 12 seems stronger this year than the conference that can’t spell “Big” or count very well.
    5. Michigan – Because ND is one of those teams I never root for.
    6. #11 Stanford – The Cardinal has home field advantage this time.
    7. Colorado State – Sorry, Mumsee. CSU is better this year.
    8. #9 South Carolina – Really? You have to ask why?
    9. Vanderbilt – I like upsets.
    10. Tie Breaker: SMU 35- 14 I don’t know much about either, but NT hasn’t had very many winning teams lately.

    1. What does Peter mean by “the conference that can’t spell ‘Big'”? (I get the not counting very well part)

    2. When did the Pac 10 become Pac 12? Who are the new teams?

    1. The B1G uses the numeral 1 (one) for the I (letter i) in its logo.
    2. Last year (or maybe the year before), Utah and Colorado joined the PAC 10 to increase it to PAC 12. Do you remember the old days when it was the PAC 8 before Arizona and Arizona State joined?

  9. Well, Chas, it’s not a college game, but NBC has football on tonight- the NFL opener with Green Bay visiting the Seattle Seahawks. Go Packers! (Wish U jbew how to make the letters green and gold. I know they turn green with a url link, but how do we get yellow?)

  10. Peter, I definitely remember Pac-8 football. That was the only college football I watched as a youngster since I grew up in LA. UCLA was our favorite. With no Midwest or Eastern connections we always rooted for the Pac-8 team in the Rose Bowl, except maybe when it was USC.

  12. So far the winner is Ricky Weaver again. He has 7 games with two to go. kbells is next with 6. They are the only two to get the tie breaker winner correct. Rick is one point closer to the North Texas 43 – SMU 6 final score.

  13. So far, so good. The Aggies (our most conservative school) are winning big. The Longhorns (our only group of Commies) humiliated themselves on national TV. Now if Virginia Tech can hold off the Yankee school and Texas Tech can wake up, it will be a very successful day.

  14. Ricky Weaver wins again! With 9 correct I think he needs to apply to ESPN or FOX Sports as an analyst. Congratulations! Now, pick another tie breaker for next week (and wait until the rest of us have placed our guesses so as not to influence anyone).

    Here are the results: Ricky 9; AJ 8; kbells 7; Chas 6; Ibno jr 5; IBNO 4, Kevin, and I 4. Oh, and Mumsee had 1 correct, though she only ever says “Go Boise” and doesn’t predict any other games.
