Our Daily Thread 8-20-14

Good Morning!

One of these things is not like the others…….

🙂

On this day in 1741 Danish navigator Vitus Jonas Bering discovered Alaska.

In 1866 the National Labor Union in the U.S. advocated an eight-hour workday.

In 1866 it was formally declared by U.S. President Andrew Johnson that the American Civil War was over. The fighting had stopped months earlier.

In 1882 Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” debuted in Moscow.

And in 1940 France fell to the Germans during World War II.

  1. lovely heading, Aj. Took me a minute to find the ‘one of these…’
Thank you so much for praying everyone. I am still sore, but not in pain like I was last night. Such a relief. I hurt my back once before and the recovery took months. That is one of the reasons I go to the weight room – to keep those muscles strong and to avoid the pain.

  2. Good Morning All. I am headed to the beach this morning for a networking/training/learning opportunity. Perhaps a coworker and I can take an agent to lunch for recruiting purposes.

Mr P and I went to a house yesterday intending to write up an offer. Because this was a For Sale By Owner situation, I had to take a lot more time with documenting that I am a licensed REALTOR in the State of Alabama. It gives me an unfair advantage in the eyes of the court if/when I get sued.
Anyway, the seller wanted to discuss it with someone else, and hinted that he had a couple of other people interested. I left him the blank contract and disclosures to read over to make him more comfortable. We shall see this afternoon what his thoughts are.
It seems that nothing is quite working out in this situation. The only think I know for sure is that I have to move. The front living room is full of broken down boxes. One bedroom is filled with packed boxes, and the kitchen is filthy. What am I doing about that you ask? I am sitting her in my PJ’s talking to all of you and drinking coffee. That’s what I am doing.
Alas, my time is limited and I must go finish getting dressed and head to the beach. Do you think anyone will notice if I blow off the rest of the day and sit in the sand and put my feet in the Gulf?

  3. Good morning! I am glad to hear Jo is feeling better.

I hope things will soon be feeling more settled for you, Kim. It is difficult to live like that. I don’t understand why things have to get so complicated, but it seems it would not be life otherwise. It give lots to pray about.

Somehow that shot of the heron in flight reminds me of a pteradactyl or some kind of flying dinosaur type creature.

I need to write a devotional for my next writing assignment. I will see if I can do one based on seeing the little child get off the school bus that I mentioned yesterday in the prayer thread. Just not sure I can make it as long as I am suppose to make it (1,000 to 2,000 words). I have to do a long version and then a shortened version. I am enjoying the writing course so far.

  5. I’m up bright and early (or, rather, dark and early), I have to go to the port to cover the “sunrise” towing in of what is supposed to be the biggest rubber duck in the world. Don’t ask. I don’t do sunrise.

They’re towing it under the bridge and then it will be towed out to the lighthouse on the breakwater — it’s about as tall as the lighthouse — to lead the procession of historic-replica wooden tall-masted ships up the Main Channel.

They’ll be here for a 5-day festival — day sails, cannon & other historic weapon demonstrations, a ‘privateer’ camp, live bands, food trucks, yo-ho-ho.

Gonna be a long day, but at least I get to use ‘home’ as my home base (rather than having to go into the newsroom) since it’s so close. But traffic and parking (and just moving around among all those crowds) is going to be a nightmare.

  6. I hope that rubber ducky stays tethered! If it gets loose it could turn into a horror film in the making similar to King Kong.

  7. Good Morning, Y’all!
AJ…The heron probably just didn’t care…they always seem so stoic…

Kim…toes in the Gulf sounds like good therapy! 😀

    Glad you’re feeling better, Jo!

Janice…I always think pterodactyl when I watch pelicans.

  8. Yes! The 1812 Overture! Who needs coffee when you can wake up to that? 🙂 Thank you, AJ!

The big arrows have the day off and are traveling to an amusement park for a day of fun. Prayers appreciated for their safety. Hubby is cutting wood right now, and will be going to work after a brief time at home this morning. So mostly around here it will be me and the youngest two arrows. And that’s just as much an adventure as anything. 😉

    Have yourselves a good day!

  9. Younger daughter and her friend are going to a state park we enjoy, except they’ll probably be enjoying it differently than we do. (We hike; they’re going to the beach.) Daughter didn’t know until I mentioned it that most of the time when we go there for a hike, we stop by the girls’ favorite ice cream shop on the way home, cuz husband discovered by accident that it’s right around the corner from the park if we go home a different way. So they get a picnic and ice cream, older daughter has to go to work, and we may have a visitation to attend for the lady who just died. (I found out she was a few days older than me, not younger as I had thought. She did indeed die before she could get the card I made–I found out later that she was already dead by the time we got the e-mail that the doctor said she wasn’t going to make it. She has been in poor health for years. We may only get to tomorrow’s funeral; my husband isn’t sure yet if he can make it to the viewing, and it’s quite a drive to it.)

Husband and I went to lunch and then drove through the Clayton State campus where Spivey Hall is. I am thinking 6 Arrows with her love of music may be familiar with that venue. A lot of recordings that are played on NPR are recorded there because of the great acoustics. Now I want to look up the history of Spivey Hall to share with husband since he likes music so much. He said tickets are very pricey there because it is a rather small place.

  11. Janice, I am indeed familiar with Spivey Hall, having heard about it on just the program that was mentioned in your link. (Performance Today.) I did not know a lot of details about the hall, though, so thank you for that link! Sounds like a beautiful place to hear a performance.

  12. And speaking of Performance Today, Minnesota Public Radio, which I’ve mentioned here before is the live stream I listen to while online, broadcasts the PT show from 1:00-3:00 Central time every weekday. Just about time to begin! Maybe they’ll have a performance from Spivey Hall today. 😉

  13. Quiet afternoon on here.

Well, no performances from Spivey Hall on Performance Today today 😉 but there was a nice piece for mandolin and string quartet that had been featured at the Savannah Music Festival this past spring. Janice, have you and your husband ever been to that festival? It’s around late March/early April, the show host said, and the description of the different flowers that are in bloom around that time (magnolias and others, I can’t remember what all he said) sounded just beautiful.

  16. I have to figure if so many doors are closing in my face there is a reason. I don’t know what it is. I do random acts of kindness. Yesterday in line at a restaurant in front of me was a mother with a baby and toddler. I carried one of her trays of food to her table. She wasn’t expecting it. I let cars merge into traffic ahead of me (as long as they haven’t run up on the sides bypassing everyone else who played fair), I am kind to the really old and really young and to most animals.
I am due a good turn somewhere.

😦 I just saw on FoxNews that a girl in Memphis was dismissed from school for saying “God bless you”. You don’t mention God in public.
The school said she was expelled for talking in class.

  18. Sorry Kim. 😦 On to Plan C (or D?)

I’m so done with the big rubber duck. I’ve spent all day chronicling his comings and goings — Facebook, Twitter, videos — interviewing people about him, standing in the beating sun waiting for him as he was towed to and fro.

I’m exhausted and sunburned (despite wearing sunscreen). At least there was a cool breeze off the water, but the sun was just brutal today. And lots of walking involved, my feet are sore! And people I know kept wanting to bend my ear about this issue or that … Always awkward trying to “escape” from that.

Now I’m home, with all the fans running, gulping down a glass of cold lemonade, and getting ready to write the story.

Then it’s good riddance, Yellow Duck!

  19. Well, Chas, if the students are expelled for talking in class, you probably will only have one terribly shy child left after a week or so. 😉 That whole thing is ridiculous.

Kim, I remember having so many houses not working out when we were looking for one. Everyone around us seemed to be getting one, though. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I do not believe doing good things guarantees any good things being done to us. Often doing good or the right thing leads to the opposite being done to us. Jesus is probably the best example. I hope you find just the right house soon.

  20. Let no one say that my husband doesn’t know how to show his lady a good time.

This afternoon, after spending the morning doing his orders on the computer, Lee & I went for a ride in the rental car he had for last night & today (his bread truck was being worked on). We went out to one town for a take-out burger (we ate in the car), & then some soft serve ice from our favorite place, Smyth’s, which has really good soft serve.

Then we headed down to another town (a city, actually) to turn in the rental car & go pick up his bread truck. Part of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car service is to pick you up &/or drop you off. The nice young man, looking crisp & professional in shirt & tie (& pants 🙂 ), drove us to the truck repair place.

So then I got to ride in Lee’s bread truck to another town, to drop off the bread truck at the “depot”, where our Impala was waiting. Then we drove the Impala home, about a 45-minute drive.

We were out for about four hours, most of it driving. (Well, he drove, I rode.)

But it really was nice. I enjoyed the burger & ice cream, & we had time to talk, & to enjoy each other’s company, something we don’t get time to do much of lately. It was a very pleasant time.

  21. One thing I’ve often noticed, & Lee is currently experiencing part of, is that oftentimes, God is waiting for us to get our attitude right with Him before He releases the answer to our prayer. We need to come to a place of contentment, as much as is possible, & truly want His will to be done in the situation.

For Lee, I had prayed a little while back that if there is something that God wanted to accomplish in him, to please help him to see that, & help him to move in that direction. Over the past few weeks, Lee has been, with God’s help, working on changing his attitudes, & not only about the route. I have seen a change in his general mood, & it is a good one.

We are still asking God to bring about a change for Lee, but it is encouraging to see how God is moving in him.
