Our Daily Thread 7+7=14

Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from Saturday’s get together. 🙂

On this day in 1754 Kings College opened in New York City.

In 1846 the U.S. annexation of California was proclaimed at Monterey after the surrender of a Mexican garrison.

In 1920 a device known as the radio compass was used for the first time on a U.S. Navy airplane near Norfolk, VA.

In 1969 Canada’s House of Commons gave final approval to a measure that made the French language equal to English throughout the national government.

And in 1987 public testimony at the Iran-Contra hearing began.

  1. From Left to Right…

Linda and her husband- our gracious hosts, the littlest is one of her sweet granddaughters 🙂

Kim- kind, sweet, and she looks just like she does on the internet 🙂

The next 3 are the Jackson’s

YapaMom and Yapa- very nice ladies, and fellow book lovers 🙂

Ajisuun/Joanne- very nice, and she has lots of good stories to listen too 🙂

Plus I got to see my very first, not in captivity hummingbird. I tried to get a photo, but all I got was one blurred shot. 😦 She was taunting me. In and out, but too fast for me. By the time I’d get ready, she was gone.

  2. It was a great time; thanks to those who could make it.
There were no onions in the potato salad.
Much to the chagrin of our son (the plumber) the background of the picture is the septic system.
Same son also asked me to tell AJ that the salsa was delicious.
AJ was so frustrated at the elusive hummingbird that he threatened to substitute a random picture from the internet but was sure the Cheryl would call him on it.

  3. okay, I figured everyone out! I have now saved the picture to help me remember everyone. So nice to see Joanne. If my son is still working for an airline next year when I am home, I will do some visiting.

  4. Nice photo. I’m glad everyone had a good time.
None of the people I’ve met visit here anymore. MakitMan shows up occasionally. We haven’t heard from WorthyGirl in years.

  5. Beautiful country where Linda lives. I could have been in any small town in the south Everyone was so interesting. I wish I could have stayed longer to hear more of Ajisuun’s stories.

  6. Nice photo. I figured out which one was Kim, but missed on the rest.

So, AJ. You don’t have hummingbirds in your neck of the woods? Come on out here. At the farm house where my church meets there are several hummingbird feeders, with a lot of the birds around. Come on over and you’ll get plenty of photo ops. You just have to put the camera such that you focus on the feeder and snap away as the birds fly up to feed. I have even seen one or two roosting on a branch. It’s rare to see one not flying.

  7. Chas- I think the girl in the middle wearing glasses is AJ’s daughter, since he said “the next three are Jacksons.” And he said the littlest girl is Linda’s granddaughter.

  8. She’s got a guy with her just to handle her luggage . . .

Fun photo, lovely get together. I guess this puts Kim way in the lead of “who has met the most of us?”

    But she hasn’t met me, tee-hee! 🙂

  9. Peter,

Turns out we have them right across the street. My neighbor has 2 feeders and tells me they come first thing in the morning and again around 7 at night. I’ve just never seen one outside captivity (until Saturday). But now that I know they’re here, I’m getting a couple feeders and setting up a blind to photo from. I’ll get’em. Eventually. 🙂

  10. I had everyone right except I didn’t know who the littlest girl was! I was afraid I’m embarass myself if I guessed.

The sad thing about hummingbirds is we only have one species east of the Rockies, or some such dividing line: the ruby-throated. In Arizona we had about 14 species, we never had a hummingbird feeder but still saw them, and I took them for granted. Even saw two nests one summer, though I didn’t take that for granted. I told all my co-workers (only my boss bothered to come out to the parking lot to see it) and my mom (who drove several miles to see it). I’d only found the first one by that point, but a week or so later I saw another.

  11. I guessed them all right except for the granddaughter. Nice pic, what fun I’m sure you all had.

I have a couple bushes that attract humming birds, they are amazing. And i had a tiny humming bird’s nest right outside my kitchen window one year but the mom abandoned it (this was before I had Annie, just to clear her name). She just quit coming back at some point. Only one egg hatched and the baby died. 😦

I was fascinated by the nest, it was so perfectly spun, a tiny little basket.

Grabbed dinner out last night with a friend & today I have the day off, a belated vacation day I had coming to me. Tomorrow’s the same.

  12. Kim is the person with the deepest tan! Great shot of those reflecting God’s image. He is so good! It was one of His sweet gifts that you all got together.

Just got the low battery message. Am still trying to cut out battery power stealers.

  13. Fairhope….We picked up both the dogs. I have started laundry. Vacation is over.
I got to cover a lot of ground this trip. Yesterday we went over to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We went to this restaurant

We ate lots of crab. Mainly we just ate lots and lots of food. 😉

  14. Sounds like a great trip, Kim.

We’re enjoying the day off, clipping the dog for the third time this summer (we do it ourselves to save about $700/year). He’s such a patient dog. He’s even fallen asleep while being clipped, until we get to the lower part of his legs and his feet – seems to tickle him.

We need to mow the lawn but the dew was heavy and we’ve also now had a very short shower. I love summer.

I also feel the need for a nap 🙂

  15. Doctor’s assistant called. There are no abnormalities in the x-rays of my legs. Everything is normal. Take Advil and if the pain doesn’t go away in a couple or three weeks, the Dr. wants you to come back.
    I’ll give it a month.
It doesn’t keep me from doing anything, but sleep. And it hasn’t done that since I started on Advil.

  16. Miss Bosley jumped on top of the refrigerator this morning. I had to quickly remove a few objects that she could have sent crashing to the floor. Then later she climbed up my clothes in my closet and went to the top of the hangers and crouched to walk over all my clothing and then went over the pole to the other side and walked over the clothing on that side. She has found it to be an enjoyable occupation to snag clothing on the hangers and make it drop to the closet floor. I have sliding doors but one came off its track so the closet is always open. Not good. Not good at all. I keep reminding myself this kittenhood will only last for about six to twelve more months. My friend’s cats seemed so tame and easy to care for. They were pleased with how I took care of their cats. They said the cats were happy to see them when they got home, but they were looking to see me. That made me happy to hear. ❤

  17. Cats are very agile. Every so often Annie decides (again) to explore the upper reaches of the living room furniture, leaping onto tall cabinets.

Chas, you probably tweaked a muscle or tendon or something and it’s still healing.

I found myself looking at samples of artificial turf today when I was at the Home Depot to pick up a couple things. It’s rather California to have fake grass I suppose. And I was surprised by how real it looked (and felt).

My water hose spigot in the back won’t turn on. Guess I need to replace the thing-y. The guy in plumbing told me to take a picture of it and bring that in so he could figure out what part I might need.

After that I came upon the fake grass display. A tattooed female salesperson was trying to talk me into getting a free estimate.

  18. I’ve got sore legs too, Chas. But that’s because I just walked 4 miles in 6 hours giving cave tours. The bad part was half of that was on the path to the Cameron cave in the heat.

  19. Yes, there are bats. But I only saw one today. They tend to stay outdoors a lot in summer, hanging in trees or under eaves. In a few weeks we’ll see more since it will be mating season.

  20. Donna, that fake grass might look real at Home Depot, but when you put it on a lawn, it looks awful. It lays out like a big carpet of fake grass. I’ve seen it on a few yards in my area, and it’s eally hideous. I really hope it doesn’t catch on, but I’m getting concerned. Most of the people who are buying houses in our area are Asian, and many of them just don’t seem to have the same aesthetic sense that I do.
